Bears spotted in southwest Wis.

SPRING GREEN (AP) - State wildlife officials say people are seeing bears all over southwestern Wisconsin.

Since the end of March, sightings have included a sow with two cubs in Sauk County; a single bear in the town of Clyde in Iowa County; a young bear hit and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 39 north of Portage in Columbia County; several reports of bears in Crawford County; and several reports of bears at bird feeders in western Columbia County.

Department of Natural Resources officials said sightings usually increase in May and June when young male bears forced out of breeding habitat in northern Wisconsin move south looking for new habitat.

They said most of the bears leave the area after the breeding season, presumably to return north, although many female bears with young remain in the south throughout the summer.

Court: Farmer's hunt was legal

MADISON (AP) - A state appeals court says a farmer was within his rights when he hunted deer over a compost pile.

According to the 3rd District Court of Appeals ruling, Hayward farmer Gary W. Blinkwolt grows pumpkins, squash and corn in a field near his tree stand. In November 2008 a Department of Natural Resources warden discovered Blinkwolt bow hunting from the stand over piles of corn, squash and shattered pumpkins.

Blinkwolt said he was composting and couldn't till the area because his tractor was broken. The warden still cited him for illegally baiting.

A circuit court judge found him not guilty, calling the compost pile a reasonable agricultural practice. The appeals court agreed, noting the DNR encourages composting and a reasonable person could find Blinkwolt was legitimately engaged in the practice.

Yes, everyone knows the cute little bears are around in the south, and the "compost pile" ruse simply demonstrates how foolish the baiting regulations are.

DNR took the judgement to the appeals court, with your money. How nice.

The circuit court judge found him not guilty but they kept trying to press for guilty. They lost in both courts.

They are trying to get the hell out of Chicago. They can’t handle “the Chicago way” anymore.

is it easy to get a bear tag? Not at all. My son has been applying for about 6 years.

Seriously, we need to redirect game wardens to border patrol. Wardens are the most overzealous people in law enforcement.

There have been so many bear sightings in Wisconsin lately that my mom wants me to carry my shotgun when gardening!

Not sure how to handle a spade and shotgun at the same time.
