absolutely! I am surprised that this sort of thing, (major injury to a seated fan by bat or ball), does not happen with much more frequency during the course of an MLB season.

Would it hurt baseball to invest in some netting to prevent such events?

You aren’t kidding. A ball comes off that bat at well over 100 mph and could easily kill someone not paying attention. The ball must have been a glancing blow or the little girl would not be alive today.

The other night, I went to a game at Dodger stadium for the first time in 15 years. The 12-4 victory by the Blue Crew over the Cardinals featured just about all the things that make the game exciting: three home runs, several stolen bases, a bunt single, at least one double play, and a wild pitch. The only thing missing was a rhubarb.

How about the Feds demand a full catcher's outfit before any fan is admitted to the park? They can drink non-alcoholic beer thru special soft straws, have a hotdog-in-a-cup, and we can strap them into their seats so they don't wander around and fall on all that concrete...
That little girl is going to tell anyone who will listen, for the rest of her life, how she got beaned by a Major League line drive. And the story is only going to get better with the telling. In fifty years, there she was, 7th game of the World Series, bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, a full count, when...

I caught part of a news story yesterday about some college team changing the name of batting practice to “hitting Rehearsal” to get rid of the BP.

We’ve simply got to do something about all this violence in professional sports. There should be restrictions on athletes, waiting periods, registration of balls, bats, jock straps and tickets. /sarc

Used to the same at Wrigley Field. Not that the Cubs could hit a ball that far, but...
