WA: Balloons filled with welding gas explode in pickup on I-405
KING TV Seattle ^ | 7/4/2010

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Homemade fireworks caused an explosion inside a vehicle on Interstate 405 in Kirkland on Saturday.

The Washington State Patrol says a man filled some balloons with welding gas - a combination of oxygen and acetylene gas - which is normally stored in steel cylinders.

They rubbed together, causing static electricity, and exploded. Troopers say the blast blew out the back window of the pickup truck.

They say the man, woman and 3-year-old girl in the vehicle are lucky they were not injured or even killed in the blast.

Hmmm; not that FReepers need to be told, but the United Morons of America need to know that the bottle should be CAPPED and DRY, before placing it on top of the box.

What we used to do is put some water in a faygo pop bottle.

(I dont know why but they worked the best)

Then you dump in some carbide and cap it. Throw that somebitch.

The pressure builds and them you shoot it with a BB gun ..PaaBoom!

Throw it in the fire for pyrotechnic effect.

Then the ultimate was dump a handful down a muskrat hole and follow with a bucket of water.

Touch that off with a lit rag on the end of a stick.
Holy Carp! It will shoot a fire column 15 feet up and the ground will heave a foot LoL

Yeah we were goofy

Homeland Security would have gone slap crazy about the gang I grew up with, we did some serious chemistry experiments. My high school chemistry teacher said that if there was a market for things that smelled bad and made loud noises I would be rich, LOL. I had to resist the temptation to tell my grandson a lot of things that would get him in trouble now.

Oxidizers are wonderful things, fulminating compounds are even better!

I know it..

We used to make this Ammonium Iodide compound.

Its perfectly stable when wet as in a paste, but the stuff is so unstable when dried out that a fly landing on it will set it off.

They taught us how to make it in high school

You put a dab of that under the toilet seat lid LoL

Or we’d put it on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door and leave it open. Some one would slap the door closed and “bang” it would fly back open!

The only time I thought my momma wanted to kill me was when I left some potassium chlorate and sulphur mixture on the garage floor. It frayed the heel on her shoe and she damned near killed me, LOL. I have never seen a woman lose her cool like that again! Drug me up the steps by my feet, so I could tell she wasn’t really hurt! Momma could hit a rattlesnake from 30 feet out with a lawn edger, it wasn’t a good idea to mess with her.

carbide cannon

After caving, dump the used carbide in the Drive-in toilet and then light a cigarette....... Darwin award

The classic carbide cannon is a syrup can or paint can with snap in lid. punch a small hole in the side near the bottom. Add two or three carbide rocks some water and pound the lid on, invert and touch a match to the hole

We used to fill a pipe up with the stuff and leave one end open. When the boss would pass by some guy would light it off and he would always jump about five feet straight up.

Eventually we got tired of it.

OOps, no kidding when giving instructions be sure to give all details.(put the lid on tight)
We used to do this when I was young, and the best fun was when we pulled the tracer rounds out of the 30-06 machine gun belt.
Granny told us we would set the pasture afire, and sure enough it was a blaze to remember!!!!!
