In case it wasn't obvious enough from Apple's agitated response to our question during today's iPhone 4 Q&A session in Cupertino, there's no software fix in the pipeline for the antenna issues that are plaguing users today. A prior report in the New York Times seemed fairly confident that the troubles could (and would) be solved in the near term by a simple software update, but the company's own Scott Forstall called said report "patently false." So, there you have it -- the only thing that'll be fixed via software is how big your smallest bar of signal is. Beyond that, you'll need to grab some Duct tape, a free case or a white glove if you're looking to avoid attenuation entirely.
Did you love the videos of the Blackberry, Droid and Samsung doing the same thing.
Watch it. There were thousands of other wi-fi devices in the room.
Boy, Apple Rulz!
And do you know the "bar" calculations for those other phones? Because Apple's already admitted they screwed up their own bar calculation - how do you know the others are right, or don't have a different definition of good or bad signal?
And is your standard for Apple now "hey they can screw up as bad as Blackberry"? If so, why spend so much money on an equivalently-bad phone?
Of course Apple's going to spin as they best can (and many of their numbers were of the format "we're only 3 worse, we're only 7 different" without any frame of reference - meaning, the numbers were meaningless).
Go to someone neutral, like Consumer Reports, and note that they state Apple's answer is unacceptable...
So I guess you can believe Steve "you're holding it wrong" Jobs on his
2nd 3rd 4th 5th different answer, or you can look to someone without a dog in the fight like Consumer Reports who states "sorry, you still haven't fixed the problem".
Fandom will, of course, influence your selection...;)
“There were thousands of other wi-fi devices in the room.”
So thats a yes.
Chick, Apple droolz
Not just Blackberry, but Droid, RIM and almost every other phone maker. It is an industry problem.
None of the other phone companies have "fixed the problem" as you so state.
And only 1.7% returned! Only a 1/3 of the iPhone 3GS!
Admit it, you're WRONG!
HIGHEST in customer satisfaction for many, many years. Got it! :)
That's not been shown. All that was shown was that the number of bars dropped. What does that mean for the other phones? How much signal loss? Pretty pictures are pretty, but not to substantive...
Admit it, you're WRONG!
About what? That the iPhone 4 has antenna problems? Apple just confirmed my statement... Why else would Steve Jobs admit the iPhone 4 drops more calls than the 3GS, needs an antenna cover (the bumper), and is being "fixed" by September 30th?
If I'm wrong about this, then so is Apple...
The iPhone 4 is not experiencing MASS RETURNS or COMPLAINTS.
Their mass complaints are coming from non-users such as YOU.
Unfortunately, it’s probably a $.10 issue that is causing all the problems. I don’t know how much it would have cost to clear coat those antennas in the factory but whatever it was, it would have saved millions of dollars of grief. Probably enough to build several testing labs.
I bet that there are truck loads of antennas getting clear coated as we speak.
I didn’t know other cell phone manufacturers were silly enough to put an external antenna on their phones. Especially one that doesn’t have some kind of insulator.
We hear charges of “Apple didn’t even bother to test” the iPhone before release. Clearly those charges were debunked today. :)
“HIGHEST in customer satisfaction for many, many years. Got it! :)”
Sure, because its an iphone.
“And only 1.7% returned! Only a 1/3 of the iPhone 3GS!”
Bunny, honestly, if I had an iPhone 4, I would seriously consider taking it back now. They are going to have a factory fix soon. I know that most people aren’t noticing a problem but once the new phone is out, resale value on the Mark 1 version will be significantly less.
“Their mass complaints are coming from non-users such as YOU.”
Then why did Jobs do what he did today?
So again - no answer.
Thanks, sweetie, for confirming you don’t know, but you gosh darn sure love all things Apple...;)
Because the press was in full attack mode.
And we, as Conservatives, know the press does that. Americans, in large part, are not aware that the press drives a story. But we Conservatives know this.
“We hear charges of Apple didnt even bother to test the iPhone before release. Clearly those charges were debunked today. :)”
I’ve read that all of the field testing was done with camouflage that made it look more like a 3G, a plastic cover over the external antenna to prevent prying eyes from seeing the new phone. Kind of ironic now.
Gosh darn, you sure looked silly today! That’s why I LAUGHED OUT LOUD!
The first two minutes of the press conference was the “IPhone 4 Antenna Song”. Watch it here.
Huh? I was sound asleep when the conference happened, and was not on TV or video anywhere. I’m not sure what you’re talking about...
