Kittens used as bait

LAKE WORTH-- You can barely hear it's meow and that's understandable.

A 4-week-old dark brown kitten and his white and silver-haired litter mate are downright tired after struggling to stay alive.

"They found them all bound up and they were near death," says Inga Hanley of Adopt A Cat Foundation.

A couple found the kittens on a boat in a Lake Worth storage yard Sunday.

The kittens were tied together with fishing line, their little front paws so tightly wound, they are now 3 times the size they are supposed to be.

"We still don't know if their front leg will be amputated. Time will tell," said Hanley.

Hanley is giving the kittens anti-biotic and vitamins in hopes that they will recuperate enough to fight off the infection on their paws.

She says kittens used as fish bait is nothing new and it gets worse.

"They use then for gator bait too. There are a lot of things people do with little kittens, that's why they always tell you don't advertise free kittens in the paper beaus a lot of horrible things happen to them," she said.

She's seen a lot of horrible things in 25 years of doing rescues, "It shocks me every time because you think people couldn't do such a thing, but it doesn't surprise me," she said.

If you would like to help pay the costs of their care or adopt the kittens please visit:

Lets see...tying helpless kittens up with fishing line to drown them and use them as bait. I guess tying the perps up with piano wire and dredging them through Seaworld (after starving the Killer Whales for a week) would be a nice parallel.

Animal cruelty, pedophilia and abortion ... I’d throw these monsters in jail and NEVER let them out!

When it comes to animal cruelty, there is no excuse for it. Ever. We've rescued cats and horses, even with our limited resoures.

If I had my way, these crimes would be handled in the following manner: the punishment would fit the crime. Always. No exceptions.

Throw them in jail, and we the taxpayers get stuck with the bill for rest of their worthless lives. I suggest some kind of horrible, painful, but relatively quick death...crushing by a bulldozer or Abrams tank comes to mind, for one.

The more time I spend on Earth, the more I realize that good people are the exception.

Otherwise, people pretty much suck.

Jail? You got that much extra money lying around?

Do you realize not too long ago many of the things you mentioned would be death penalty crimes?

I tell you if/when the SHTF there is going to be a swift change back to swift, old-time justice.

When the punishment fits the crime, we’ll see less of both.

You wouldn’t happen to have a name or an address for this boat owner, would you? I’m not sure if I’m serious. Depends on who’s reading.

I have a rescue dog, actually I gave him to my granddaughter, but he is the sweetest thing and was abused as a puppy. We have had him three years now and he still has some affects of his puppy hood(certain types of men he will growl at, though he has never tried to bite them, luckily I am not of that type!), but he is obviously very trusting of us. Half black lab, half German short hair.

Several years back, when my oldest was a toddler, there was an article in our paper about a bunch o’ kittens found under a porch, and the local shelter was looking for someone to adopt them.

So, we sauntered on over to the shelter, figuring even if those kittens were adopted already, we would adopt a kitten for our son to pal around with.

We looked at the kittens, they still had a few of the ones that were in the paper, and we were all set to ‘adopt’ the them. Until the adoption cost was explained...

They wanted over $200 for each of the kittens that were in the paper (to pay for their medical treatment), and the other kittens were about $125 I think (just mut cats). Full grown cats were $90 bucks I think.

Well, we are all for ‘adoption’ but the wife and I both thought that was a bit much. We thought we were doing the shelter a favor by offering to adopt them. We didn’t realize that being good of heart also meant dropping a hefty sum of cash on top of it.

We were given quite the guilt treatment, told how they had so many kittens that would probably have to be put down if they weren’t adopted, and the older cats were basically going to be put down if they weren’t adopted ASAP because no one wants an older cat......

I became irate, and explained to the teen aged girl, that we were willing to help out, so the cats wouldn’t have to be put down, but there was no way we were paying that kind of money. She basically sneered at us, her look indicated at that point that she felt as if we weren’t good enough. It was obvious that the whole shelter thing was nothing more than a pet-store, using guilt and threatening death to the animals if we didn’t act NOW.

So my feelings on shelters is now pretty mixed. I don’t know how to take their tactics.

But, we figured one kitten was as good as another when it comes to needing a home. We ended up getting 3 kittens out of the newspaper for free, and they are still with us (although much plumper and lazier).

I know folks complain about pet stores, and pet-mills etc, but I have never had a pet store employee tell me “buy this at an exorbitant price or we’ll have to kill it”, which was really what was going on.

Animal cruelty is a state of mind. It is not about the animal. It is about the intent of the human. If, in the mind of the humans involved, this is strictly about using the best bait, it is not about being cruel to animals. It is about catching fish, aligators, etc.

It is like using live worms. Whether or not it is animal cruelty depends on where you draw the line. Don’t get me wrong. Kittens are not worms, but nor are they human infants.

I know PETA thinks there is no difference, but I do.

>>Do you realize not too long ago many of the things you mentioned would be death penalty crimes?<<

Although I agree with that sentiment, the opposite is true as well. At least one of the things mentioned would have stirred no more interest in the general public than driving slightly over the speed limit on occasion would now.

True, but life was incredibly harder back then. People still would have considered the person cruel and an idiot for doing it. The difference today now too, is that these things come to light and millions of people can know about it. Back then he could do this for decades and people probably may never have found out.
