Kittens used as bait
WPEC News ^ | 7-21-10 | Juan Carlos Fanjul

LAKE WORTH-- You can barely hear it's meow and that's understandable.

A 4-week-old dark brown kitten and his white and silver-haired litter mate are downright tired after struggling to stay alive.

"They found them all bound up and they were near death," says Inga Hanley of Adopt A Cat Foundation.

A couple found the kittens on a boat in a Lake Worth storage yard Sunday.

The kittens were tied together with fishing line, their little front paws so tightly wound, they are now 3 times the size they are supposed to be.

"We still don't know if their front leg will be amputated. Time will tell," said Hanley.

Hanley is giving the kittens anti-biotic and vitamins in hopes that they will recuperate enough to fight off the infection on their paws.

She says kittens used as fish bait is nothing new and it gets worse.

"They use then for gator bait too. There are a lot of things people do with little kittens, that's why they always tell you don't advertise free kittens in the paper beaus a lot of horrible things happen to them," she said.

She's seen a lot of horrible things in 25 years of doing rescues, "It shocks me every time because you think people couldn't do such a thing, but it doesn't surprise me," she said.

If you would like to help pay the costs of their care or adopt the kittens please visit:

people in the "old" days were much more pragmatic and less sensitive to some things....my fil would immediately drown unwanted kittens...back then, and still today, outdoor cats served a purpose.....they kept the mice at bay....and one farm or plot of land could only support so many cats....

they would place the kittens in a sack, tie a rock around it and throw it in the water....

its not my way, and I couldn't do it...I don't even like to thread a worm...but it was a reasonable practice for some....

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I said the same thing yesterday when I was out. Give me pets anytime.

thats a pretty high fee. Generally I thought it was the cost to spay/neuter, plus some for the shelter’s operating expenses. While I agree that guilt tripping you wasn’t nice, I can sort of understand. It must be hard to see an endless stream of helpless baby animals, plus grown abandoned ones, come in the front door, only to die two weeks later when they didn’t win the selection lottery. And the urge to save just one more through questionable tactics might be understandable. I’ve never been pressured at the shelter, and have adopted several pets there.

They probably thought you were trying to get the kittens for FREE, so you could use them as FISHBAIT.

Anyone who thinks that their interest in catching fish with the “best bait” is more important than the pain and suffering inflicted on these helpless animals is a sorry excuse for a human being. Survival situation and need to catch food? That’s different. Wanting to catch the biggest bass in the lake? Not so much.

Redneck fishermen.

Hey A-hole, I am a redneck fisherman. Maybe you should learn what redneck really means instead of using it as a pejorative. Whoever did this was sick and evil. Educate yourself.

Back in my golf pro days, I worked at a club that employed an assistant superintendent that drowned kittens in a bucket (one by one). After letting him know that I would have taken the kittens, paid to have them looked at and eventually spayed and neutered, I stopped associating with him and haven’t spoken a word to him in over 15 years.

I have even seen him in social settings where he would say hello to me and I would simply look at him and shake my head. He knows how I feel and I know how he feels. He doesn’t see anything wrong with it.

I think anyone that doesn’t see anything wrong with it has something wrong with THEM.

I know what a redneck is. It’s origin is in the mines in WV and the strikes that ensued.

These are redneck fishermen in Florida, not redneck hero miners in WV. Sorry, there’s no way else to describe them other than maybe white trash fishermen.

"You wouldn’t happen to have a name or an address for this boat owner, would you?"

No, and it's probably a good thing. I have a hard time feeling any warmth or sympathy for anyone who would harm the truly innocent and/or helpless. Anyone who would harm the unborn, the young, the elderly, and animals deserves whatever horrible, painful, dehumanizing punishment they could possibly receive.

Mind you, this doesn't include harvesting animals for food...but to do what was done to those helpless kittens is not only inhumane, it's inhuman.

Yes, there will.

Lets see...tying helpless kittens up with fishing line to drown them and use them as bait.

I will admit that I've made humorous comments about using puppies, small dogs and kittens as trolling bait for muskies here in S.E. Michigan but I would never have thought that someone would actually do that.

I'll be the first to shove my way to the front of the line to exact justice on whoever was responsible for this.........In fact I would have set fire to the boat that they were found in.

There is still a whole sub-culture of humans,or is it culture of sub-humans,who believe cats are to be tortured as a normal part of a boys adolesence.Oddly enough, those boys are still mean and dangerous when they are old.

No wonder God had such a diffcult time finding 10 good people in certain places.

If it is neeeded and necessary to kill,it should be done in the way that inflicts the least suffering on the animal (or human) being killed.People who derive pleasure in the suffering of innocent creatures should be a concern to all others.Even desiring to see or know some vicious criminal suffered is a weakness.

The question: “Who does these kinds of things??”

Your answer: “Redneck fishermen.”

I didn’t know there was a season on rednecks, much less how to fish for them. Might I ask the basics, like size minimums, bag limits, etc?

The animal whackos got together with the usual suspects (commies in offices) and got a shiny “Animal Services” facility passed. Then the “Animal Services” persons began servicing the public. - like a bull services a heifer.

The fees are reasonable if you consider the salaries of the swarm of uniformed whackos servicing the public at the shiny new facility.

Gotta keep whackos off welfare, right?

White trash is a social standing, not a sick, evil person. God you are dumb, even if you do run to wikipedia to look up ‘redneck’.

“People” that commit acts like this are likely to do the same things to humans.

I can’t stand that the person(s) who committed this crime will probably get a year or two if even that.

If this were done to my cat there is a good chance that I’d just lose it and beat the guy (and then of course I’d be the bad guy).
