One of the dangers of swiping pics off the internet. I didn’t know he was a known cop killer or I wouldn’t have posted the scum’s picture. :0/

No worries on this end.

BTW, I can’t remember his name, but I’m sure he’s incarcerated in (and committed his crime in) Utah.

Each other. They're having sex with each other. Ew.

I hope they use non-sparking tools or they could set the bedsheets on fire.

Now that's an image I'd like to get out of my head.

You have four options. If the first one doesn't work, try the second. Work your way down the list, one step at a time.

1. A psychiatrist.
2. An exorcist.
3. A fifth of Jack Daniels and a couple of Benzedrine.
4. A .357 Magnum.

I’m an old white fart and I earned my seniority the right way. To me my employees represent my company and I have no tats or piercings, if they have tats they are where I cannot see them. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person with certain job requirements and if someone else feels the same then it gives me a good feeling.

My friend, I have one tattoo. Most of the guys in my platoon got this tattoo on the same weekend, and all of us got it on the left arm, just below the shoulder. It's a coiled rattlesnake, with the following words underneath it:

DON'T TREAD ON ME

We got these tattoos years before the Tea Party movement adopted the Gadsden Flag. I know the Marines also like their "globe and anchor" tats. I hope that if you see just one military style tattoo peeking out from under somebody's sleeve, you'll make an exception in your hiring policy.

Some Internet friends of mine have said that tats and piercings can be addictive, and of course that can lead to their being overdone by some people.

One gal said that she was trying to quit, and she couldn’t walk by a tattoo parlor because the sound of the needle was too tempting.

That is a very interesting datum. I wonder what the appeal is - masochism? Endorphins released by the pain? Exhibitionism alone seems an insufficient explanation.

33rd wedding ? :)

Thanks all. To bring it back to the thread topic, however, I will sign off with this :

The people pictured here are BAD. On the flip side of the coin, mild body mods, even those that don’t cover up, aren’t the same as what we see here. And certainly, my job performance nor my ability to land a client is affected by -my- choices of body mods. Tattoos or piercings peaking out of appropriate clothing is no reason to send someone packing.

Not sure. Lack of interest precluded my researching it further, but your masochism and endorphin theories sound really reasonable to me. I also suspect you’re right about exhibitionism. It just can’t be that alone, or streaking and street busking would be more popular than painful self-mutilation.

I wonder what the appeal is - masochism? Endorphins released by the pain? Exhibitionism alone seems an insufficient explanation.

I think that in many cases it's an embrace of tribalism, made fashionable among the uneducated by decades of Leftist indoctrination about how any and all stone-age cultures are so very much more noble and virtuous than American and Western cultures.

In some others it's a matter of them being lifelong social misfits for any of a variety of reasons.  Having extreme and visible body 'modifications' simultaneously makes them a part of a social 'tribe' where they FINALLY have SOMETHING in common with others and it also gives them a visible, obvious excuse and a crutch for whatever their real, original failings may be.  "People only hate me because of my piercings!".  A facade to cover up and mask a boatload of failings underneath; to deflect attention away from who they are.  By doing this to themselves they instantly become an 'oppressed' minority and can now rail against anyone or anything who doesn't 'accept them for who they are' as being so terribly 'closed minded', and thus they are placed, in their own minds and those of their peers, on the moral high ground.  They feel that it gives them 'street cred', instant acceptance and relevance among a certain group of superficial malcontents.   The Left's deification and fullscale support of any and all deviant behaviors encourages the weak and the lost to embrace deviant behaviors and lifestyles instead of making an effort to fit in among well-adjusted people.....there is a massive support network for them.

It also gives people who really have nothing to say something to talk about.

Indeed.

Walking through Hyde Park in London, Hubby and I came across a tiny squirrel sitting on a wrought-iron fence. As we walked by, it took a bow -- one paw on its itty bitty tummy -- and of course we gave it some peanuts. It snagged the loot and started nomming. No fear, man! It's a living.

For the most part, people with tats and piercings are simply desperate for attention.
With all too many of today’s youth, there is a boney-dry-well of talent and ability, so tats and piercings are a way to feel “special”.
If you want to look like a clown, that’s your business but you will NOT represent my business.

On the other hand, it's not even permanent. If he wants to, he can always change his hair to one shade, cut it, and/or take out the earrings. He says himself that he has a job and even has a wife.

I wish you all the best, Celerity.

Excellent essay,

Thank you so much for your gracious compliment :-)

and if you substitute the description of the members, then it applies to a lot of the leftist “protected groups.”

Indeed that is precisely one of my points.  By adopting an 'edgy' outward appearance they instantly align themselves with a subversive subculture that has become so powerful that it is in the process of destroying our entire nation and culture.  The ACLU and a flotilla of other shrill, hard-Left activist pressure groups will be far more inclined to rush to the aid of someone with a bone through his nose and dinner plates in his ears who is complaining of discrimination because he wasn't hired as a sales rep for IBM or Amway than someone who looks fairly normal, carries a miniature copy of the Bible in one pocket and the Constitution in another who merely is asking for an equal opportunity.  The first individual is working toward the Left's goals whereas the second person is not.
