I'll bet you love the SmartCars too. I saw one on the freeway last week being driven by a huge fat man, he took up the entire inside of the car. He sped past me like a bat! If he had a wreck they would just have to bury him SmartCar and all.

I don’t see that many slow drivers in the left lane, but I see lots of people going way over the speed limit in that lane but it’s not the fast drivers fault if a wreck occurs. Interesting.

In N. Western Pa. I had to get accustomed to everyone driving bumper to bumper in one lane though there are two or more to drive in....and that includes when people are coming on from ramps....they don’t pull into the other lane so they can get out. It’s basically follow the leader all the way isngle file. Amazing.

Well in Jacksonville Fl. you darn well better wait when the light turns green.... until all the redlight runners have passed the the redlight. It is common there...If you go when the light turns green you’ll get mowed.

Get a bumper sticker that says "Honk If You Love Jesus". You will never have the problem again.

This doesn't bother me. When it has happened, it is because we both got to the intersection about the same time. I see it as an act of courtesy.

We have that miles and miles of miles and miles out here, perfect place for going fast

That sounds nice. By the way, if my speed limit were 75, I wouldn't be doing 76, but would ramp up appropriately to 81, a nice six miles over.

Publana, dear, you are the one who concerns me most. What part of the country do you inhabit? Please don't say Tennessee.

One time, I got passed on CA Highway 101 by a speed demon zig-zagging recklessly through traffic. I swear his license plate read, "Azzhol" or something close to that.

Truth in advertising, I guess.

Talk about using any argument, no matter how fallacious, to be able to do whatever you like! The speed limit for the passing lane is the maximum speed limit posted for the road!!! The traveling lane may have a minimum speed limit, say 45 mph, when the maximum speed limit is 70 mph. This means that someone driving in the traveling lane may travel at any speed between 45 and 70. Drivers using the passing lane are supposed to be traveling at a maximum of 70 mph, the maximum speed limit for the road. If you are driving over 70 mph on a road posted 70 mph, you are speeding and breaking the law, not to mention possibly driving to endanger. Not that hard to comprehend.

It truly sounds like some FR posters are trying to rationalize breaking the law and then castigating other posters for getting in the way of them doing it! Speed limits are set for everyone's safety. Police don't give tickets for observing the speed limit. They give tickets for drivers exceeding the speed limit as they are the drivers who are behaving dangerously. The logic on this thread by some posters is bizarre!

I live in JAX at the moment. You are exactly right! I called 911 a while ago to report a semi that ran a red light on Arlington Expressway after my light was green. Had I or someone else been quicker to enter the intersection, we would have been creamed.

Yep...when I moved there my brother warned me right away NOT to go when the light turns green but wait til those who run the red pass thru...I was amazed how frequently that happened...had he not told me I would have been mowed or dead!

BTW How do you like Jacksonville? Beautiful city thought. I stayed in Mandarin across from St. Johns Bay....then got an apartment close to the Bay.

One of my major gripes are idiots who come up to a stop sign at an intersection where they want to turn left, and they start their turn before they stop (and before they actually enter the intersection). They stop at an angle, partially blocking the oncoming lane.

That makes it much more difficult for anyone wanting to turn left onto that street to make their turn. Either you have to allow the idiot to proceed (even though YOU have the right of way), or you have to make a very sharp greater-than-90-degree turn to get around the idiot.

Very often the idiot will add insult to injury by pulling forward as you are trying to get around him making your turn even more difficult, or even dangerous because now you are having to predict what the idiot is going to do when, in fact, he is supposed to be stationary until you are clear of him.

Idiots do this to save a little time, but by making it more difficult for the other guy, they just slow down the process for everyone (and occasionally cause an accident).

4 lane highway with the center yellow lane used to make a left hand turn off the highway.........

My beef is with people attempting to enter that highway from a shopping center. They want to go left while right to left traffic lanes are filled with traffic so they scoot into that yellow lane when the left to right traffic clears. Then when the right to left traffic clears, they merge into the lane.............

The only problem is that they are sitting there blocking the center yellow lane while a legitimate trafficker has pulled into that lane in order to make his legal left into that very shopping center...........

"pull right out in front of you"

The other side of the coin is the one that races ahead of you in the left lane, suddenly veers in front of you (even though there is no car less than a quarter of a mile behind you), and then abruptly enters an exit ramp saving himself one tenth of second. But you have to slow down to avoid slamming into the moron as he or she slows down to exit.

“4 lane highway with the center yellow lane used to make a left hand turn off the highway.........”

Around here, that is what you are supposed to do. But yes, one needs to be REALLY careful in doing it. Most of the times there is enough space for both folks coming off of and going onto the road. Until the traffic starts backing up, and the person wanting to turn left drives 1/2 a block in the the turn lane. There is one place near here that when it is busy I just drive around to the side road so I can use the signal rather than messing with trying to get back onto the road.

My main pet peeves:

1: People in a left-turn arrow (no other traffic except them can go) that wait until the car in front of them has cleared the intersection. It is REALLY frustrating to be stuck in that lane and seeing 4 cars go when 8 could have!

2: When they DO turn left they veer over into the right hand lane rather than staying in their lane. I used to turn right in front of left-hand turn drivers in my old truck to teach them that lesson. With a new truck and wiser now, I don’t unless I am sure they have enough time to see me and figure out they need to stay in their lane.

3: At a 4-way stop, when it is crowded, and the two cars facing each other and going straight wait for the other one to pass through the intersection. (When they COULD go at the same time).

In my opinion, your continued complaints about people wanting to go faster than 76 is why so many here didn’t really accept that your only issue was taking time to safely move over. Because you certainly sound like you dislike HAVING to move out of the way of someone when you are going 76.

I still say I don’t understand the concept of not being able to move out of the left lane. I’ve never found myself trapped in a lane for more than a few seconds. Have you often missed your exits because you can’t move out of the left lane?

I love roundabouts. Interestingly, when I visited England, I got a few days where I rented a car and drove across the country, and I found that very few English drivers knew how to correctly navigate the roundabouts.

It was funny merging in easily while all these native drivers were slamming on their brakes and causing trouble.

Anybody who drives the speed limit in the left lane of an American highway, unless everybody in front of them is doing the same, is a menace, and causing unnecessary risk to themselves and others.

And a police officer would tell you the same thing. You go the speed of the traffic. Heck, even Genoa drives 6 miles over the limit; most people who “obey the law” do so by driving 9 miles or less over the limit.

Simply put — if you drive too slow in the left lane, you will make people upset, and upset drivers are dangerous to you and others. Better to move over, let them pass, and stop worrying about whether other people are “getting away” with something.

My post was more about how it is supposed to work in theory. I realize it's not how it actually works in practice, CWCT. In my post I didn't say to sit in the passing lane doing just the speed limit. If you're doing 85 (in a 70) in the passing lane and never moving over to the right lane, then you have essentially taken it upon yourself to flout the law and to make the passing lane your own personal traveling lane. If you're in the passing lane you should only be passing someone who's not doing the speed limit and then moving back to the traveling lane to again resume doing the posted speed limit yourself ~ IF you're someone who believes in following the law.

It seems people here want to argue it's ok to break the law when that law inconveniences them or they just plain don't like it. In what other circumstances do these FReepers believe it's ok to break laws that they don't like? Do FReepers no longer agree with the premise that we are a nation of laws, or does that apply only when it comes to laws they agree with?

I don’t dislike having to move “out of the way” (as you put it) as much as I object to the idea that someone who is six miles over the speed limit is driving hazardously slow. I get miffed with people who think there’s no speed limit at all (for them). And they insist that I’m the one who’s self-centered.
