Vanity: Please tell me which LCD TV to buy....

Posted on 09/13/2010 6:33:23 AM PDT by StrictTime

I'm just numb from doing research, so I'm opening up the floor to take suggestions from FReepers.

I hate to think that I'm going to be dropping $2K on a TV that has a life of 2 years (Samsung, Vizio, according to the interwebs). Looking for a 46" LCD with a matte screen (brightly lit room).

Anyone actually happy with a brand/model? Mostly interested in comments about reliability, since I HATE shopping for stuff like this every couple of years.

I’m not a good one to ask. I’m still watching the Mitsubishi (sp?) television I bought in 1980. It works fine for me. Someday I’ll get a new one whenever this one finally dies.

Whatever you buy, get it at COSTCO because they extend the Manufacturers Warranty to TWO full years for FREE.

Shop Costco, Best Buy or Sams Club.

Buy a Vizio or LG.

Can’t go wrong.

I've owned a Sony 42" LCD for five years and I have no complaints. The matte-finish screen was an important factor.
If I were to buy today, using your criteria, I'd probably go for the Sony BRAVIA 46" ... 1080p, 120Hz, LED-LCD HDTV.
Personally, I'm waiting for the 3D market to mature and eliminate the need for glasses. Probably a couple of years before the technology and right price come together.

We purchased a 52” Vizio and have had no problems. Ours was from Sam’s and cost just over $700 so I think your dollar figure it’s going to cost is rather high unless you’re going for a high end model with split screen, etc. Ours works fine, we purchased it 17 months ago and have never wished we’d gotten something else.

I’m not sure where you’re getting the info that they will only last around 2 years ~ I inspect hotels and have been seeing these sorts of TVs for around 4 years now and very few have needed replacement. This is one of the questions I tend to ask, more so I have information for other owners asking me than for any other reason.

In fact, that said, I’ve heard no complaints from hotel owners on any brands and believe me, I’ve seen just about every brand that is out there.

We’re still watching an old tv, because the newer styles, especially the HDTV, give our daughter migraines.

Try this link and website:

Consumer Search

They do an excellent job of aggregating and analyzing product reviews. Based in part on their recommendation, my brother recently purchased a Samsung LCD in the size you have in mind. After eight months, he could not be happier.

I did a lot of research about 18 months ago, I ended up buying a Sharp Aquos from Costco. Beauitful picture, no problems with it at all.

Never had a problem with LG, but there are a lot of good brands out there, so take price into consideration. Costco is the place to go.

My 19 inch “Portable” Sony Trinitron, with the push buttons for each channel is doing just fine.

(By a 47 or 46 inch LCD for less than a 1,000 bucks.)

I have a 46 inch Samsung that is almost 3 years old and I’m still happy with it. When I bought it they had the identical TV in both matte and glossy and I bought the matte version. It had a contrast ratio of 15,000:1 in matte and the glossy was 25,000:1. 15,000:1 was fine.

Last year my son bought a Samsung 32 inch I think about the minimum contrast ratio now is 50,000:1. I know a relatively cheap Samsung 24 inch I bought last year for my camper (haven’t installed it yet) had that contrast ratio.

My sister also bought a Samsung last Christmas on my recommendation and she is quite happy with it.

Bottom line, I don’t think you will go wrong with Samsung. And you should be able to buy a 46 inch for considerably less than $2000. Best Buy has one right now for $1099 (not sure if it’s matte or glossy).

Ditto on Samsung. I have the 55” LED Series 8 for about 9 months. It has been fantastic.

The LCDs seem to have a better lifespan than the much vaunted plasma screens.

You might go to komando.com, use her search window and search for “LCD TV.” Kim always has some great ideas and it will only take you a few minutes to use her expertise.
