What was your story that brought you here to this site.
I don't recall if it was Rush or a caller, but I took a quick look at FreeRepublic, and the rest is history!
FreeRepublic has literally been a God send for me. It keeps me informed in a manner that the state run media refuses to. With conservative discussion and factual information.
And the people here are pretty cool too!!
2008 election. I was frantic to find people who saw the craziness I was seeing. Ran across Free Republic and knew I had found a mental home. Thank you, Jim.
My first post was a newly worded pledge of allegiance for the Obama Nation that I made up myself. It got lukewarm reviews. I now understand that is the standard FR welcome! I now laugh when others do the same. It’s endearing.
I’m on Sunken Civ’s GGG ping list and love it. I also love talking to the old timers here. The memory wall is really special. I pray for every person who appears on a prayer request.
FR teaches me a lot. It’s become a part of my every day schedule.
Yeah, my transformation was gradual from that first George Bush State of Union address and I became a lurker here until his ‘04 election when I was so fed up by kerry and the leftists that I took the plunge and officially became a freeper.
What was your excuse!?
My Father, Edward Linn aka EDLINN. 1923-2000.
Good one :) Well OK, but please explain what your mindset was in googling 'zot' back in 1998 and finding FR ??? /laughs
Myself? I googled ''Unnngh' for some strange reason, and found this place .......
(no, that's a dirty lie ... MM is lying ... but what the heck, it's all in fun ;)
Doing battle with some leftie on another site. When he ran out of insults he called me a “F’ing FReeper”. I had no idea what he was talking about and came to see what he was calling me.
Been here ever since...;-)
I heard Clinton’s a Liar on a radio interview and found the link to Whitewater on Drudge in early ‘98 just as the Paula Jones story had really heated up.
Lurked behind a primative firewall at work and didn’t register for over a year and a half. Was on a chat room thingy with Yellow Rose of Texas, Two-Thirds Vote Aye, amom, Towanda and others from that era. Rose and Towanda got me to register and start posting my drivel — May of ‘99.
The Clinton era was a wild ride. Then came impeachment with its highs and lows. The YTK era, the primaries, the SoreLoserman era all issues for the internet vehicle JIm was to kind to create for us. A dozen years fly by when you have a fellowship like this one here.
I’ve seen a lot of drama, tears, joy and learned a lot. Thanks Jim needs to always be added.
That’s the best story out of the bunch rockrr! Thanks for sharing. I just started reading because my dad talked about it all the time! Thanks Dad!
Joined when my late husband, known here as 1John, saw a link from the Drudge report during the Lewinsky saga (c.1998)—and we became Freepers right then and there. Interesting times for sure!
The funniest part is that I’ve been wracking my brain trying to remember what site I was on at the time. Whatever it was is long lost, but I try to catch a bit of FR everyday.
I first remember seeing Free Republic’s name during the Bush/Gore Florida Recount battle back after the 2000 election. I saw some conservative protesters down there in Florida on one of the cable news networks waving homemade signs that had FreeRepublic.com written on them.
I started lurking here after that, then signed up for posting privileges in May, 2001. I still mostly just lurk but do occasionally post replies or articles.
I don't even remember why I was Googling Bee beer.
Ill never forget it. I clicked onto FR, read a few threads, and yelled to DH —”you should see what I found! People who think like us!!”
Drudge Link, I’m sure. Lurked for a couple of years. Signed up in July of 2001. I read this site several times a day. and we no longer need a newspaper. I’m always impressed with the wit of freepers. It’s a wonderful meeting place for conservative minds.
The 2000 election. The whole Gore recount BS drove me to find like minded people who knew like me Gore’s position was total CRAP.
Found FR on Nov. 27th 2000.
Drudge Report link, January 1998, when the Lewinsky scandal broke. I changed screen names twice early on, not realizing seniority bragging rights were at stake. :)
It was late at night; I was alone in the office. Jim Thompson walked in and told me either I hand one chance to learn what was really going on. He had a blue pill in one hand and a red pill in the other...
Thank you oh so very much for your encouragements, dear mo, and thank you for remembering the DSL!
Drudge linked it on his site shortly before Lewinsky story went public....
Drudge in ‘98...
I found Free Republic from a link on the Drudge Report.
The Clinton administration. Found a usenet group that had a poster who pointed the way to FR.
AOL had a chat room called From the Right. Someone suggested I check out FR.
Rush Limbaugh and the link on Drudgereport.
lol! I could almost hear you saying that...So your dad worked for Reagan? That is a great legacy to be affiliated with.
It was just before the general election in 2008...October and I was looking for information on polling and how things were looking for ‘our’ side. Guess I googled looking for alternative sites. Well I ended up at the DU site and was absolutely horrified; call me naive but honest to God, I was appalled at the writings of those demented people. I hit the back button and FR was listed so I clicked on it. This place became my refuge immediately and still is. The owner is a class act and I could go on and on but one of you old bats would just flame me and call me a newbie. LOL!
My mother told me about the “Whitewater” link n the Drudge Reprt.
KingVanity and I were watching Alan Keyes in a Free Republic event in DC on CSPAN.
Fell head over hills for Keyes as a family and checked out the sponser of the event FR.
The rest has been history.
Freedom - Whiskey - Sexy!
Spent most of my time reading RSS newsfeeds and boring articles. Stumbled onto Free Republic one day and CONSERVATIVES were actually talking amongst themselves, telling jokes and posting pictures. I was home.
” I Was A Teenaged Blog Pimp!”
Lookin’ forward to THAT story! lol
Personally...I was chikken. ;o)
I knew about FR before the Monica thang happened...from Drudge...and Rush.
When that story proved to be true..breaking on CNN on Jan. 22, 1998...I decided to ask my husband if I could use his computer.
Of course, I didn’t know lick spittle about it. lol
But, he showed me, and I found this site. For Christmas, 1998, he bought me a computer.
Lordy...the ASH alerts and DITHF were marvels to me! The replies...OTOH...scared me to death.
I lurked all of that time before I got up the gumption to sign up on Aug. 16, 2000.
This was pre-MOD days...free for all at all hours of the day and night. But, I found some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever encountered during my lurking days...and continue to find those smart folks even today.
No...you aren’t one of them. lol JK You are one of the interesting folks who keeps me loving this forum.
FREE A+Bert!!! ;o)
It was the incisive, and often humorous, comments and the informative articles.
I forgot to ping you to my post above.
To sum it up, FR is the reason I know how to use a computer. I had no interest in it before I found FR to be the cutting edge of the new media...before there was such a thing as “new media”.
Long-time Freeper, Josh Painter (aka Sturm Ruger) used to post articles with links back to FR, at a forum I used to hang out at. I stopped in here frequently, and lurked for years before finally joining up in 2007.
> FREE A+Bert!!!
Cheap at half the price!
Alternate motto for the French Revolution?
I used to lurk at alt.impeach.clinton back in ‘98 and saw a mention of Free Republic.
Like a stray cat, I sniffed around, got a meal, and never left.
Heard something about free beer, so I came for a look see. Turns out the beer wasn’t free, but I stayed anyway.
At the time, around 1998, I was a regular on the AOL political message boards. It seemed that whoever the board administrators were, they were abusing their positions in favor of the liberals on the boards. Many conservative posts were getting deleted for minro or non existant infractions, yet liberal posts, no matter how outrageous, were allowed to stay. Someone who got tired of the censorship simply mentioned freerepublic as an alternative. I came here and have been here ever since.
I was home from work with a badly injured leg. I got tired of talking to liberals and wondered if I was the only conservative left.
I typed in conservative websites and the rest is history.
Drudge Report while reading it at the J2 office in Brindisi, Italy in 1998.
The Bush memo’s.
People who love America and think like I do.
Same here, FRiend!
I was a commentator on the Grudge Match humor website, and so was FReeper Darth Sidious. When we started corresonding via email, he kept inviting me to FR.
Bite your tongue!
But this is a good opportunity to say that JimRob & Company designed an outstanding site. Since this is the first forum I used and all the others feel like a kludge to me.
