Posted on 09/24/2010 5:34:41 PM PDT by Swordmaker
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) Apple Inc. is a Death Star. It pulls in most of what comes into its orbit and either overtakes or assimilates it.
The success of the company is particularly spectacular because it is largely a four-product enterprise, consisting of the iPad, iPod, Mac, and iPhone. It also produces a suite of supporting software that includes its OSX, the Safari browser, iTunes, and the App Store. These non-hardware products knit together the iProduct universe.
Apples product line stands in stark contrast to tech giants like Microsoft Corp. (MSFT 24.75, -0.03, -0.10%) , Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ 41.02, +0.04, +0.10%) , Oracle Corp. (ORCL 26.96, -0.16, -0.59%) , and Cisco Inc. (CSCO 22.17, +0.08, +0.36%) , all of which have a multitude of product lines that spreads risk and increases sales opportunities. As a result, Apples revenue run rate, is only over $60 billion much smaller than that of Cisco.
Some consumers are wondering whether a tablet like the iPad can replace a laptop for travel purposes. On a recent trip to Paris, Walt Mossberg decided to find out, saying au revoir to his laptop and relying on a tablet and smartphone for work and play.
However, despite the competitions size, Apples market cap is $240 billion, more than those of Oracle and Cisco combined. Perhaps the thing that Wall Street loves most about the company is that it is growing quickly, especially for a company of its size.
The reason behind its growth is simple: Apple clobbers the competition.

Give it a rest,"swordmaker",we understand that you love Apple and own lots of its stock.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
The customer base responds to that.
Swordmaker often posts negative articles about Apple.
I love my new iPad! :-)
Only to declare them FUD. He never admits they might be right.
I hear Serious Materials is experiencing phenomenal growth, too.
Not so. Go back and review.
What do you use it for mostly? Does the touchscreen work well? I'm somewhat intrigues by it but I don't need another unused toy laying around.
Trolling, trolling ...
It is so, I’ve seen his cheer-leading for years. All negative articles he or anybody posts he immediately declares FUD. Every single one.
I read a lot of articles, so it’s wonderful being free from a laptop/PC sitting back and relaxing in a nice chair or the couch. Steve Jobs was right about it being just that.
The speed is also very good with the WiFi here at home.
Can you link one of these negative articles that he does not decry as lies or FUD?
Getting any bites?
You are welcome to research. But I can assure you I will not exert the time on your command.
Just got one.
Classic bubble... Lower revenue, lower profits, lower profit margin than Microsoft, yet a higher P/E and valuation. Add in the fact that Apple’s losing market share to Android, after barely breaking into the top 3 in terms of phones, and it’s in a bubble.
Yeah, the Apple fans will come on here and shout me down about how it’s all about profits; but what about Microsoft and Google, both of which have higher profit margins than Apple?
Apple’s really good at marketing their latest iMustHave to their existing customer base, and churning that cash on the same group. But their actual penetration in the smartphone market - or PC/computer market - is virtually unchanged over the years. They’re a bit player in both.
You folks are like the Sarah Palin haters. They go on the Palin threads to disrupt. There is no other reason to do it.
Don’t like Catholicism? Go on a Catholic thread to get a rise.
You are disruptors plain and simple.
Hook’s still empty.
So the answer is no, you won't. Because as we all know - they don't exist. In fact, the last "negative about Apple" post that Sword made was:
Yet right in his very first "non intro" post he writes:
This patent is about production level invention that was obvious on it's face.
Basically calling it FUD. It very well may be! But that just proves the case:
Sword will never post anything negative about Apple, ever. He may post negative news about them, but he ALWAYS attacks it as FUD or not real or not worth worrying about...
You don’t take criticism well, do you?
No, I'm saying you are welcome to spend Friday night researching. I'm not.
I am sure you are happy with your game machine in your mom's basement! We Apple users are happy with our choices! You should try supporting your choice rather than bitching about nothin' and lying about most stuff!!
You troll, disruptor. You have nothing to add.
Sorry, I didn’t realize this was an Apple Love Fest thread... I thought that negative things about Apple were tolerated? That even Sword posts them?
If you don’t like Catholics do you go on Catholic threads? If you don’t like Palin do you go on Palin threads.
You like to disrupt.
You made the claim, and were called on it. If you choose not to back it up, then your implicit withdrawal of the claim is noted.
Have a wonderful evening!
They are losing market share, but selling more phones. To say they aren’t selling iPhones to more than their base is inaccurate.
They will never dominate market share for a lot off reasons, but that doesn’t mean they won’t have moved beyond their base. And they did do a lot to explode the market for those companies who have a goal of market share dominance.
The article is wrong about the Kindle. The iPad will have little effect on Kindle sales because it is so cheap, the battery lasts for weeks, it is light and works in more environments like outdoors/sunlight where the iPad is useless and too expensive to take to the beach.
You may spend your weekend doing it.
Do NOT have a nice weekend, troll.
You mean like personal attacks and insults?
I’m sure Sword would love to talk to you about your demeanor and attacks and words here. It’s been reported, please try to clean it up...
When they lie about Protestants or Buddhists or Jews, yes, I call them on it.
Like I called you on your claim.
Perhaps you would prefer an echo chamber? I’ve suggested several times in the past that an Apple caucus might be worthwhile since dissent is not tolerated.
You mean like your friends do?
You disrupt. Can you deny it? How are you not like a Palin hater on a Palin thread?
You disrupt. It drives you. Disruptor.
I did not say that, did I?
I stated they are losing market share, and that is a proven fact. Do you dispute that?
Hilarious! You always call out for reinforcements.
If that's being a troll, you know where the abuse button is. Push it and let's find out.
We LOVE our Ipads. The touch screens are amazingly good. Apps run screaming fast. I’m actually on line and working before my desktop at the office even boots up.
Battery life is much longer than our old Dells too.
I’ve even installed a SIP phone app on mine so I can make and receive calls on it. I ran a 3 party conference call on it the other day at a customer demo. Dial my desk phone and the iPad rings anywhere I have a wireless or 3G connection.
Way cool that.
I pinged a few people to whom Sword has stated categorically that Apple fans never attack, never insult, that non-Apple fans are always the first to attack. You’re free to see posts just a few days ago where Sword re-iterated this claim as fact...
I thought the most recent proof of that fallacious claim would be worthwhile for them.
You may also see threads recently where a discussion between myself and others pinged immediately resulted in a “calling of the troops” by no less than Sword. Perhaps you can query him about it?
You disrupt. That is your purpose.
Way cool that it is!
You think you have apps, huh?
Tell the lady of the house that I have the OPI app. Huh! ;-)
Like I said, you disrupt.
Your purpose is exactly like Palin-haters who INSIST on going on Palin threads.
Either I'm just a disruptor, or I offered an different opinion or perstective and you can't tolerate it.
If you report me for abuse and I'm clearly being disruptive, then it'll be decided, and that will be it. Isn't that easy enough?
some of us don’t read outside, strangely enough. We play golf, swim, garden, walk our dogs, mow the lawn, or wash the car.
reading on the beach? nope, we read in bed at night instead of watching the tube, and appreciate the iPad for reading in the dark so we don’t disturb our spouses.
to each his own...
Why are you comically pleading for the abuse button? You are so transparent!
How about you guys just stay off the Apple threads?
