A father who fought off a starving bear has told how he survived the 'horrendous' ordeal in which he lost an eye as the animal bit into his head.
---
'I vividly remember being bitten on the head and the sound that makes as her teeth were going into my head and running along the skull,' he said.
'It was just a horrendous fight.'
'I do remember her hitting me in my left eye and how that felt.
'There was just a bright flash of light.'
Understanding that he was in a fight for his life, Mr Chelminiak refused to let the bear keep him on the ground. He somehow managed to stay on his feet as the bear bit and clawed him.

Was it a crunchy sound?
No point in making this comment in a Brit newspaper, but, What idiot would go out UNARMED in bear country?
They were aware of reports of bear in the area and yet he goes out unarmed?
In a state where concealed carry permits are issued at the drop of a hat!
I live in black bear country and I go out all the time unarmed. It's very rare for a black bear to attack someone like this. Grizzlies are a whole other matter. I wouldn't go into grizzly country unarmed. But black bears? I've encountered them plenty of times, and under normal circumstances, their first instinct at the sight of people is to run. This guy was just unlucky. They might not have managed their cabin site very well either, re: garbage, food, etc. I guess it wouldn't have hurt him to have a knife at minimum. Sounds like if he could have gotten one good knife jab in there, the bear would have retreated.
Knife, schmife.
12 guage rifled slugs are just the ticket.
A S&W 629 with 255gr handloads for ‘walking around’ in the boonines.
He should have bought the Nissan Leaf....
Guarantee he’ll be looking over his shoulder more often...the right shoulder in his case!
Where was this dude’s dog?
Sam needs to give him a talkin’ to.
When the dogs escaped, the bear turned its attentions back to Mr Chelminiak
Wimpy dogs.
It's getting so that any place that has wooded hills is bear country. In hilly and wooded western Wisconsin where I live, fifty years ago bears didn't come close and were only found two hundred miles to the north. Now there is now a bear colony in my parts.
Bwaahahahaa excellent comment.
N GA mountains are now lousy with bears. Not enough people hunt them. The state also protects them. You just don’t go out after dark walking around unless you are carrying. Its a bad idea.
I’m just sayin it’s right inconvenient to carry a shotgun with you whenever you leave the cabin. Bears are pretty good and breaking and entering, so I guess you’d be slinging your shotgun inside, too. I’m saying maybe you have a shotgun, maybe you don’t, but either way, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a decent knife. That’s something that is easy to have on you almost all the time.
People normally dedicate a sizeable period of their lives experimenting with hard drugs to be able to make such claims.
