And the association has asked the town for a permit to hold a community civil rights style march Saturday down the street in front of the home where the flag is flying. Town planning and public safety officials are reviewing the permit application and a decision is expected later in the week, said Charlie Miller, planning director. But he did not immediately see a reason why the application would be turned down.
Residents of the predominately black Brownsville community in Summerville are angered over a neighbor's Confederate battle flag.
The moves follow a controversy that erupted in September, when a new resident hung a Confederate battle flag from her porch alongside an American flag and decorated her yard with Confederate insignia among other knick-knacks and seasonal decorations.
The move outraged neighbors, and more than 80 residents packed a meeting held by the communitys District 1 Civic Association and a neighborhood Crime Watch group to deal with the matter.
Annie Chambers Caddell, the resident, said she does not understand the communitys concerns, and that the motif is part of who she is and is not racially motivated.
People who live in the neighborhood said they understand that some people consider it heritage, but to them the connection is to slavery, lynchings and the Ku Klux Klan.
Town officials said she has a right to fly the flag and the town wont force her to bring it down.
While we understand the woman has a legal right to fly that flag, we want to call public attention to it, so that people will think twice about trying to do something like that again, said Councilman Aaron Brown, who represents the district.
Some of those “tolerant” types have proven they are willing to kill people over the Confederate flag.
Good thing the town doesn’t have any real problems and so many people have all this time for such trivia.
Idiots. If they don’t like it they don’t have to look at it.
I have never seen a Confederate flag in any lynching photos. The Klan didn’t begin using the Confederate flag until the mid 1950’s.
They want the woman beaten and the house burned down to make her an object lesson no doubt.
How about they march against people flying the Mexican flag?
Notice how liberals, most of whom support the building of the victory mosque in NY, suddenly take this tack when the subject has to do with a Confederate flag.
Do you think the story would be a little different if people were massing in front of a house to protst a rainbow flag?
People who live in the neighborhood said they understand that some people consider it heritage, but to them the connection is to slavery, lynchings and the Ku Klux Klan. .....................................................................................I guess one could say the same about the Betsy Ross Flag. The 13 colonies weren’t anti slavery at that point. Other than the KKK not being present at that time, the slavery and lynchings probably were. ????
If I were Annie, I would tell them to go pound sand.
Why dont some of these folks try flying the original stars and bars if they really need a CSA flag.
It’s not only more thoughtful, because it was the national flag of the place, but it will thoroughly confuse lefties whom will see it as just some redesigned U.S. flag, and wont know to protest it.
I love to fly cool and unique flags, but I’m very careful and thoughtful when it comes to which ones I use because of stuff like this. I wont even use the flag of Japan because I really dont want to offend some of our WW2 veterans. Even the flag of the Hong Kong SAR, even though it is a very nicely design flag, will never be used.
So why do you think your interpretation should trump? And if we are going to talk racial crap lets talk more current events shall we?
What about the famous “rainbow” flag....? Can I protest that one then?
There. Fixed it.
Some people really need to get a life.
There are two flying on my street and occasionally three when I fly mine. ;) I don’t hate black people but I do love my southern heritage.
The Klan has also misused crosses and bibles, should those also be banned?
Some people really need to get a life. It's a simple and obvious comment, and probably the first thing that came to all our minds as we read this story.
But you posted it, and it made me laugh.
Annie should now hoist the Gadsden and the Jolly Roger American Revolution flags to really torque their bolts.
“Why dont some of these folks try flying the original stars and bars if they really need a CSA flag.”
Because that would be caving in to the “politically correct” hatred of the left engaged in reverse racism. The Confederate Battle Flag has been a staple for generations. Only in the past decade or so have the Black racists tried to tie it to racism and KKK. It has gotten so bad that Mississippi is now in the process of changing their mascot to accommodate this balderdash.
Rest assured that if the idiots became familiar with the National Flag of the Confederacy (of which there were several versions), the same type “protests” would apply.
Next up will be protests that the six flags that fly over many Texas government buildings will have to be changed to five because one of those flags denote “racism”. If we continue to fold our tent every time these aholes blow their smoke, we are dead meat.
>> The move outraged neighbors
The Obama voting race exists in a permanent state of outrage. After all, the ability to express rage at every real or perceived slight is one of the few reliable skillz they possess.
You know they are trying.
That reminded me to go into my pictures and set my picture of the Confederate flag back on my desktop. Thanks. I rotate the flag and my picture of Renaldus Magnus.
And carrying 2 more. One under each arm!
“so that people will think twice about trying to do something like that again”
Says it all....
Running North is what Yankees do best.
Have at it then.

The battle-flag is a prettier design if you are using it for decoration.
Great Bumper Sticker!
My North Carolina wife always kids me about being a “Yankee” (I was born and raised in Charlestown, MA (”The Town”)) and have been “down here” since 1976.
When we were stationed at MCAS Cherry Point in ‘82 - ‘85, she came home from work one day and said she just saw her most favorite bumper sticker.
It read: “Clean Up The South, Buy A Yankee A Bus Ticket.” It’s still MY favorite!
The home owner should tell the mosey SOB’s to mind their own business and stay off his/Her property.
What nerve these idiots have.
Mosey should have read as Nosey. My damn big fingers got in the way.
At that time MOST of the best known KKK groups actually did business NORTH of the Ohio River, and frankly Confederate flags weren't that popular there!
Every time one of these politicians (inside or outside formal political party structures) gets into sexual trouble many observers recall D.C.Stephenson and Madge Oberholtzer. It brought down the largest KKK operation that ever existed.
Many thought there was a risk of this in the Monica Lewinsky affair since her death would probably have destroyed the Democrats.
But Monica didn't die ~ another former WH Intern died, but Eric Holder is mixed up in that particular situation.
A black man and a lesbian just don't have the same cachet!
While we understand the woman has a legal right to fly that flag, we want to call public attention to it, so that people will think twice about trying to do something like that again,
Meaning you folks are a bunch of intolertant bullies. Scare anyone else who might try to exercise their rights. Boo!
Pretty small town hall??
Come onto my grandpas property and tell him to take down his confederate flag and he will shoot your a*#!
Sometimes the idea is to piss off a specific group of people...on purpose. If they’re offended, it’s their problem.
That bumper sticker is funny...in a gratuitously insipid sort of way, but it is incongruous with the story. There are no “northerners” identified in the story. As far as I can tell it is all (southern) locals creating their own drama.
Looks like y’all need to tend to your own fences.
There ya go
She should hoist a Mexican flag just before the protesters show up
I cannot wait for Bloomberg, the jackass and the ny times to defend this woman. You know that free speech that they selectively embrace
There is no Constitutional protection against being offended. If your neighbor chooses to fly the rebel flag then either move or suck it up and live with it.
Uhhh! don’t think threats are a good idea. Danger, Will Rogers!
You are pretty new here.
Flags are symbols.
Like any other symbols, they have no inherent meaning. They have only the meanings projected onto them by the viewers.
The “Confederate flag” is a lovely example of this because it has so many meanings for different people. Depending on the person viewing it, the following groups of associations might spring to mind:
Pride in the southern heritage. Honor for those who fought and died as bravely as any men in history for what they believed in.
Racial oppression. Terror in the night. White supremacy. KKK. Lynchings. “Keep them in their place.” Jim Crow. Willingness to fight, die and destroy the nation if necessary to protect and extend the institution of slavery.
General rebelliousness and rejection of authority.
Treason. 640,000 dead Americans, the equivalent of +6M today, in a fight to protect an evil institution.
There are legitimate arguments about whether the flag “should” carry all these elements of baggage, but not that it does.
So if you display it, you can reasonably expect some people to react as if you were quite literally promoting these causes, even if graphically rather than by spoken or written word.
I can understand the feelings of those on both sides of this issue.
Personal opinion: the racial oppression of our past was the greatest single failure of American idealism and conservatism. Opposing and destroying it was by extension the greatest moral victory of liberalism. Which is why they try to turn every issue into an extension of the “civil rights” struggle, regardless of whether it fits or not.
Providing unnecessary fuel to liberals’ insistence that “civil rights” have yet to be won seems unwise to me. Our goal should be to encourage all to think of themselves as Americans, not as black Americans or white southern Americans. The disply of the flag, whether it is intended or not, is in many cases divisive and counter-productive.
This crowd will be back to remove homeowner's American flag shortly.
She should hoist the Mexican flag right before the press gets there and flip the headline on them...
