Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years

Japanese researchers will launch a project this year to resurrect the long-extinct mammoth by using cloning technology to bring the ancient pachyderm back to life in around five years time.

The researchers will try to revive the species by obtaining tissue this summer from the carcass of a mammoth preserved in a Russian research laboratory, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

"Preparations to realise this goal have been made," Akira Iritani, leader of the team and a professor emeritus of Kyoto University, told the mass-circulation daily.

Under the plan, the nuclei of mammoth cells will be inserted into an elephant's egg cell from which the nuclei have been removed, to create an embryo containing mammoth genes, the report said.

Umm.........Do these guys ever watch TV? It always goes bad, and the next thing you know people are dying and the thing ALWAYS gets away to come back later meaner and bigger.

Not only that, but it'll find a way to reproduce...with ITSELF!!

If they succeed, doesn?t that render the whole endangered species act and other such crud obsolete? After all, extinction itself will be extinct...

Yup. Then there’s the mutations. There’s always mutations.

Fire breathing 30’ tall mammoths from H#ll. Probably flying ones, too. With a taste for human BRAINS!!!

"Tonight's secret ingredient on Iron Chef..."

I would have recipes. And a theme. Scary thought, that. Within 30 seconds of seeing your comment, I had the whole meal planned. Mammoth milk ice cream for dessert will require some special techniques (for the milker, not for me, is just ice cream).

Humans are the ultimate predator. You went extinct before we finished with you? Sorry, you get to play again.

I want to see them create a zombie/cyborg mammoth with freakin lazer beam eyes MAN! Oh sure, it starts with the ooo’s and ahh’s, then there’s the running and screaming...

Laser beam eyes are a great idea!

When it inevitably goes berserk, the people running and screaming is just a bonus.

"Tonight's secret ingredient on Iron Chef..."

LOL!

I really liked the original version of that show.

I thought it had the best intro in TV history.

Then they’ll have to re-create cavemen and saber tooth tigers when the Mammoth population gets out of control

and cave women.

Look at the plus side.

The wooly mammoths will eat all the polar bears, and we can start drilling for oil again.

Wowza. That's Raquel. And she's really, really old now.

I learned that in ancient history class. Because I'm way too young to remember that from personal memories.

You must be really, really old to carry that picture around.

They don't make 'em like that any more.

It'll be just like the emu ranching thing in Texas a while back. Next thing you know, you'll let them go so you don't have to feed them, and we'll be hitting them on the highway.
