By court order five years and more following the death of the owner and father-in-law in 1857, deed of manumission, Court of the City of Richmond, Virginia, December 29, 1862.

My name is Wesley Norris; I was born a slave on the plantation of George Parke Custis; after the death of Mr. Custis, Gen. Lee, who had been made executor of the estate, assumed control of the slaves, in number about seventy; it was the general impression among the slaves of Mr. Custis that on his death they should be forever free; in fact this statement had been made to them by Mr. C. years before; at his death we were informed by Gen. Lee that by the conditions of the will we must remain slaves for five years; I remained with Gen. Lee for about seventeen months, when my sister Mary, a cousin of ours, and I determined to run away, which we did in the year 1859; we had already reached Westminster, in Maryland, on our way to the North, when we were apprehended and thrown into prison, and Gen. Lee notified of our arrest; we remained in prison fifteen days, when we were sent back to Arlington; we were immediately taken before Gen. Lee, who demanded the reason why we ran away; we frankly told him that we considered ourselves free; he then told us he would teach us a lesson we never would forget; he then ordered us to the barn, where, in his presence, we were tied firmly to posts by a Mr. Gwin, our overseer, who was ordered by Gen. Lee to strip us to the waist and give us fifty lashes each, excepting my sister, who received but twenty; we were accordingly stripped to the skin by the overseer, who, however, had sufficient humanity to decline whipping us; accordingly Dick Williams, a county constable, was called in, who gave us the number of lashes ordered; Gen. Lee, in the meantime, stood by, and frequently enjoined Williams to ““lay it on well,”” an injunction which he did not fail to heed; not satisfied with simply lacerating our naked flesh, Gen. Lee then ordered the overseer to thoroughly wash our backs with brine, which was done. After this my cousin and myself were sent to Hanover Court-House jail, my sister being sent to Richmond to an agent to be hired; we remained in jail about a week, when we were sent to Nelson county, where we were hired out by Gen. Lee’s agent to work on the Orange and Alexander railroad; we remained thus employed for about seven months, and were then sent to Alabama, and put to work on what is known as the Northeastern railroad; in January, 1863, we were sent to Richmond, from which place I finally made my escape through the rebel lines to freedom; I have nothing further to say; what I have stated is true in every particular, and I can at any time bring at least a dozen witnesses, both white and black, to substantiate my statements: I am at present employed by the Government; and am at work in the National Cemetary on Arlington Heights, where I can be found by those who desire further particulars; my sister referred to is at present employed by the French Minister at Washington, and will confirm my statement.

—Testimony of Wesley Norris (1866); reprinted in John W. Blassingame (ed.): Slave Testimony: Two Centuries of Letters, Speeches, and Interviews, and Autobiographies Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press (ISBN 0-8071-0273-3). 467-468.

Yes, but a differennt news site. This was published today, one day before Robert E. Lee’s birthday.

You just can’t speak or write enough about General Robert E. Lee.

There are few who can stand up to him today.

US Grant never owned slaves. He was too poor.
I have read his autobiography, several biographies, and several other books that included facts about US Grant.

Slaves, fraid not.
[Unquote]

In Mary Robinson’s July 24, 1885, recollections, during an interview for the St. Louis Republican memorial to Grant following his death, she noted that “he always said he wanted to give his wife’s slaves their freedom as soon as he was able.” In 1859, Grant freed William Jones, the only slave he is known to have owned. During the Civil War, some slaves at White Haven simply walked off, as they did on many plantations in both Union and Confederate states. Missouri’s constitutional convention abolished slavery in the state in January 1865, freeing any slaves still living at White Haven.

“I Ulysses S. Grant…do hereby manumit, emancipate and set free from Slavery my Negro man William, sometimes called William Jones…forever.”

Wrong. Grant owned a single slave, William Jones, whom he acquired from his father-in-law, for a total of about 10 months in 1858. The man was rented out to small farmers in the area as labor, but the idea didn’t really work out and Grant freed him outright, even though he could have sold him for some much needed income. The 13th amendment was passed in 1864. It had nothing do with Grant’s decision to free Jones.

You may be thinking of the slaves his wife’s father owned, one or two of whom served his wife sporadically during the war. Neither Julia Grant nor US Grant were the owners of record of these slaves.

You’re also wrong about RE Lee. The slaves at Arlington were not freed by Lee, who was the executor of the estate, until Dec. 29, 1862.

Interesting tidbit. Too bad it’s upside down.

Robert E. Lee’s viewpoint on slavery was fairly moderate for the times. He thought that they were better off here in America as slaves than free in Africa. Yet he and his wife helped to relocate free blacks to Liberia. He viewed slavery as “God’s will” if he thought of it at all, and the slaves that he had contact with were of the man-servant or Man’s man variety.

He kept his personal slave, Rev. William Mack Lee throughout the war and when William was freed, he chose to stay with REL.

US Grant, on the other hand owned no slaves, except for William Jones, whom he acquired from his father-in-law in order to manumit. Grant married Julia Dent, whose family were slave owners and Grant worked as an overseer to his Father in law’s business for a time.

U.S. Grant owned slaves throughout the war and did not free them until the 13th amendment was ratified

This story gets more lurid in the retelling as time goes on. It is true that Lee opposed slavery and secession. Grant was a Stephen Douglas, i.e. tolerant of slavery, Democrat before the war. Grant lived in Illinois, a free state, before the war. His father in law lived in Missouri and did own slaves.

Eat Sh*t, yankee.

I can see how you would make that mistake and perhaps a short explanation is in order.

As you know, the 150th anniversary of Secession (South Carolina seceded on December 20, 1860), the birth of The Confederacy and The War of Northern Aggression begins this year. Because of that, a lot of threads about that subject have been posted on FR lately. These type threads have been going on for years but there have been more lately.

Anybody that reads these threads will quickly realize that the animosity and anger that led to secession and the war between the north and South still exists. Some people wring their hands and whine, "Why can't we all get along!" or, "Who cares about that ancient history!"

However, there is another contingent that we Rebs refer to as The Coven (coined by stand watie). The Coven is full of hate for the South and they roll in on every thread posting yankee lies, mythology, revisionist history, hate and anger. They use leftist/marxist tactics to attack The South, The Confederacy, Southerners and anybody that post a pro-Southern reply. (one of their members is an admitted 'former' marxist!)

It is suspected that a few of their number are libtard trolls from DU and other left wing radical websites who pose as conservatives and start these flame wars on Confederate threads (they infiltrate other threads also) in order to portray FR and conservatives as divided. One of their most infamous members, non-sequitur, was recently zotted (he had a couple of other FR identities that were also banned; darren whyte and abin sur).

Perhaps my sarcastic "cue the haters" reply makes more sense now.

Yes. Sorry that I misinterpreted who you were.

We met in the basement this morning to sing a chorus of Dixie in honor of General Lee.

And? Please tell me that you’re not honestly expecting a man who was born, raised, educated, lived and died in the 19th Century to hold to 20th and 21st Century ideas of equality?

Are you really that stupid?

There was a thread yesterday about the NAACP sponsored MLK rally in Columbia, South Carolina on Monday discussing a picture of the statue of George Washington being covered up for the event. (I'm assuming because Washington owned slaves and to protect the delicate sensibilities of the melanin enriched attendees.)

I wonder if WhiskeyX and his politically correct cohorts are proponents of erasing from history all of those evil slaveholders that founded, fought for and built this country?

I also wonder what WhiskeyX and his politically correct cohorts would have to say about RE Lee if he had stayed in the union army? (I suspect that his sins for slavery would have received the typical yankee historical whitewashing.)

The mods have their crosshairs on you guys. It's just a matter of time.

BTW, how many Southern states were you born and raised in as of today? My last count was three: Alabama, Louisiana and Virginia.
