Posted on 01/28/2011 9:33:26 PM PST by jongaltsr
Seeing what has happened in Egypt and their ability to quickly shut down the internet got me to thinking about the possibility that at some time in the future OUR Government may try the same with us.
Therefor I thought that to prepare for such an event should be planned by us (the citizens who would most likely to be effected as well as the people most likely to need alternatives to internet connections to stay in communications and keep upraised of events not being reported accurately (and intentionally).
We would have to depend upon our telephones but that can readily shut down by a government that is willing to cut off internet access.
TV and certain radio stations would be all that we could rely upon in such an event. I would imagine that some (Right Wing)-(other than the acceptable liberal radio stations) would be shut down (or can they?)
Can you (My fellow FR conspirators) think of methodologies of maintaining connections to information which can not easily be cut off by our government agencies?
In some countries, people have taken over Radio and Television stations but that requires physically attacking and provoking Police & Military action at some point.
Put on your thinking caps and lets see if there are any of you out there that can devise a plan of action for such an event.
My one thought (so far) is that the government might not shut down the telephone system immediately because that would directly affect so many people that that act in itself would be more devastating to citizens than would the loss of the internet. Therefor a "Tweet" link could be our own second line of information. I'm not sure if the "Tweet" system involves the internet in any way. Is it independent of computer technology and strictly Phone System dependant?
Since I don't "tweet", I just don't know the answer to that question.
Can you devise other ideas? and let us share your ideas "Just in Case !"
IF? IF they shut it down?
If our government shut down the Internet, there would be immediate chaos in the business world.
Internet sales would cease. Products would not be bought or sold on line. Billions would be immediately lost.
Stocks would plummet.
And the people would call for the immediate resignation of the president, the vice president and the rest of his cabinet.
I think Ham radios will be the only thing left. Maybe two way radios would work. Scary.
Dah Dit Dah Dit
Dah Dah Dit Dah
I have great faith that my Collins Twins would work. Old but reliable. (and several other rigs) But I might have to fire up the generator to run it. But don't expect that, it would take EMP to cripple us that bad.
The internet is not that old. Neither are cell phones.
What did you do before the mid 80s?
I sometimes think a shutdown might be a blessing in disguise.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. —Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government.
We are not children. We are not vassals. We react badly to tyranny.
if they take away the First Amendment the Second Amendment becomes the correction to restore the First Amendment.
Hung out in libraries. Spent money on loose women and strong drink. The rest I wasted buying trade magazines.
It ain't the 80s, and I'm not going back to then, or caveman days either. So you and the far left can KMA on the 'good old days' schtick. Because they were not good. But they did get old.
I’m afraid the reply you would get would be Duh.
Not many people know Morse today.
And if you wanted to talk to me you would have to use a flashing light:)
“immediate resignation” This man is not now or never will be qualified to hold the office of President. He will tear down everything that makes this country great. He is a Socialist and his agenda is ruination of all things American. He is a disgrace to America and the laughing stock of the world! Off with his head, and jail for his cabinet and all his Tsars.
Sorry. It's the long days without listening to the soothing sound of DX pouring in through the shack speaker. ;)
Do the math. 3% of 300 million.
All technology can be taken away. Shut down the state capitals that support it. And shut down DC. Show up in force. We surround them.
When the first amendment is taken away we have the second to back it up.
“So you and the far left can KMA”
Don’t EVER associate me with the far left, near left, or anything left of far right field :P
Now put your filthy KMA back in the toilet.
Amateurs radio operators have been practicing for just such an event for decades.
“And the people would call for the immediate resignation of the president, the vice president and the rest of his cabinet.”
At the very least. Interesting that in Egypt, the government shut down their internet to (try to) diffuse the riots. Here, if the government shut down out internet, it would trigger riots.
Know morse well, but not wig-wag.
One thing about few people knowing morse is that gives some obscurity to the mode. It can be machine decoded if the fist is good, but human ears and hand on the keyer varries.
In the worst conditions, the presence or absense of a signal will go through when all else fails. Especially on low power.
There are still many good CW ops. Most not in US. Russians have many, you would expect that. Most really good CW ops in the US were X-mil. I knew one in OK that could do 60-70 WPM in his head. But he ran a mil for years copying 5 letter code groups. Made it automatic. (he is gone now, silent key)
On a serious note, off topic, if you have any hearing at all, get your chart from your last hearing test and get a DSP filter that you can set to match your hearing cut-off or notch frequencies.
I'm H3 as far as the federal gooberment is concerned, and I really don't hear (or listen) well. But with a good DSP filter (I use a Timewave(tm)), I can pick out morse without a problem.
I meant to say our internet (not out internet) :-)
Without Internet, Egyptians find new ways to get online
First, if the government shuts down the internet, bad things will happen quickly.
In the US, we use the internet to monitor home medical devices, to keep critical infrastructure systems (traffic, transportation, fire, police, phone service, emergency, etc) up and running, as part of VOIP, as part of security systems, and so on. It’s a critical part of commerce and banking, too.
Take all of that away, and people are going to suffer and die in no time flat.
Now, what will we “do” about it? If you have satellite phone (like Iridium), a dial-up modem, maybe Hughes Net, live near the border, or own a smart phones, you should be able to get online in one way or the other. That’s what is happening in Egypt right now. They have a much more centralized internet provider system than we do, and even they can’t stop everything.
Some of those - dial up modems, smart phones and satellite phones, would be hard to disable without crippling the government itself. But if they managed to do it, you’ve still got more ham radio operators than you could count to broadcast information.
I can talk 7,000 miles away on a home made vertical antenna. I did it yesterday. DX is there, just intermittently. Communication with CONUS is easy, even in less than desirable conditions. Where did you want to talk to?
BTW, the keyboard you just typed on, the concept is older than 110 years...
Better to replace a government that thinks they can enforce that kind of crap.
Khmer Rouge don't play well around here. We're armed. Take your utopia of mid 1980s down the road.
I love the way people act like texting is a new concept.
Propogation depends on band. Even during sunspot minimum there is a lot of useable spectrum.
I know all this talk is silly, but we do have some serious house cleaning due in DC.
The Elitists think it is dying down, but they are mistaken. They have only seen the first stage of what is coming for the slimes.
Domestic Traitors and foreign enemies will see the wrath of We the People.
“Without Internet, Egyptians find new ways to get online”
I well remember dialing into BBs prior to the internet, but few had more then a handfull of lines.
As for ham radio, they could shut that down, just as they did in WW2, but if it comes to that, we will be in full revolution by then.
You know. A serious solar maximum. I only have 3 left (if that).
BTW, Twiddlers aren't older than 110 years. So go easy on my newbie keyboarding option.
Kiss alot of tax money goodbye for one thing. Business will grind to a halt without internet.
It’s the internet revolution. Literally!
He is all you said, and possibly not even a citizen.
If Stanley Ann Dunham is his mother and Barrack H. Obama, Sr. his father and if he was not born in the U.S. (there is no known proof that he was), he cannot be a U.S. Citizen at all. Because his mother was too young at 18 when he was born to transmit citizenship to him. As per the Immigration act of 1952, which was the applicable law when he was said to have been born.
The only way that BHO can possibly be a “natural born” U.S. Citizen is if someone other than Barrach H. Obama, Sr. was his father........
What a mess, what a liar, what a fraud.
It is time for a reconing.
Not down here in the Southland. I’m good for a while unless they drop the grid too. Then half my food would go and canned field peas are gonna get old after a while. I’ll take the doves off the powerline with my .22 or pellet gun. Yuck, I hate those things but food is food.
They can’t have my weapons without a major fight, I don’t have a passport and I can do without the ‘net for a while. I have water and munchies and cooking fuel to last a month or so, after that my cat is gonna start looking pretty tasty ;)
Poor Rocket. So many Friskies and so much fat.
The mechanical filter in my 75S3 Collins is not shabby.
Throw a wire over a tree and tune to 40m band. You will have contact with folks in many states just like that.
I want a pony...Sometimes you just have to wait.
Wrong, typewriters with basically the same keyboard, are older than you think.
That doesn't actually work so well in practice. A good antenna still matters, min or max.
And think about how much news we get from Pravda (who would have expected that?) or the UK. Stuff that doesn't get printed here.
We need world-wide comms.
“Throw a wire over a tree and tune to 40m band. You will have contact with folks in many states just like that.”
I pretty well know that.
Before my station burned to the ground in the late 80s, I had worked every possible DXCC country, and was top of the honor roll.
