If you could move to one state, which would you chose?

Ok, I am from NJ. Between the high taxes, strict gun laws and crazy liberals I am seriously thinking about moving... have been thinking this for quite some time. Right now I have three children and have to pay for private schooling for all three because the public school's agenda's here are disingenuous and horrible. I want to make sure I do not go from the frying pan into the fire. I have a few choices for job transfers to NC, TX and OH. I need to be in a good area as I have a Neurological disorder and need an area with good doctors. However, I want to look at a state that will not give into any FEDERAL PRESSURE regardless (Are there any states left?). Looking for good infrastructure, few unions, decent schools (or good private schools), friendly gun laws and good hospitals. I guess what I am looking for is a a state that will stick to Constitutional principals regardless of what happens.

I think Southwest Utah is a better choice.

Shhh! Don’t say Texas. We’ve already got far too many wacky liberal northerners moving in down here and trying to take over. It’s a toss up which is worse, the RAT yankees or the La Raza chanting illegals.

We like Utah...... the slick rock country

We spent a whole month wandering around Texas and our views have changed. The decision would become, what part of Texas do we move to.

Freepers would do well to study the revolt of the Texicans against the new government of Santa Ana. In the present context the people of the Alamo and of Goliad and of San Jacinto provide a better model of revolution against tyranny than the original revolt against England

Texas or Florida. I’m in Texas (south of the Houston Metro area), and probably going to retire in Florida Panhandle, or Puerto Rico.

South Carolina ticked me off when I went into the military years ago. They jacked me on my taxes so I had to fight it (I won), but then I relocated with the military and chose a new state. I was fine to pay my income tax to SC until they screwed with me and then I found a more friendly state that didn’t have income taxes either.

My gain their loss.

One thing I really hate about NC and SC. The red clay mud...and their crappy pine trees. Well that’s two things but they go together in my mind.

I lived in Texas for 20 years (Houston area). Houston will meet all your requirements; no personal state income tax, good schools, great med center, very affordable housing.

Check it out. I’m only in the DC area because of a divorce. I’d move back in a nanosecond.

Interesting that the smaller towns in western NC seem to have higher than national average violent crime.

We enjoy our Yankees when they move into Texas. You’ll make a lot of friends quickly, guaranteed.

I grew up in the RTP area of North Carolina - we moved there from California in the 70s. My mother always hated it. The people would be very friendly to your face, but as someone here mentioned, if you are not from a Southern state, you will always be considered an outsider...unless you hang out with NE libs that you are trying to escape. I left in the mid 90s, but I understand it is being completely overrun by Yankees.

The comments about Durham are spot on... the Tom Wolfe novel I Am Charlotte Simmons was based on his niece's experiences at Duke University (although the city and university are given fictional names). In the book, the characters refer to Durham as the City of God. (ie, the impoverished ghettos of Rio de Janeiro.)

I also lived in Chapel Hill for a short while. I loved Chapel Hill, but didn't have the money at the time to really live well there. There are specific types of people in Chapel Hill: those affiliated with the university (students, professors or administrators - read "liberals"); the PhDs who work in RTP (read "rich liberals"); and those who are there for the music (read: "poor, stoned liberals"). But if you are into indie music, it's one of the best places in the country to start a band. Doesn't sound like you are though ;-)

I moved to California, hated it, and then to Arizona, which I love. It's not on your list, though.

I live in Northwest Houston in the suburbs and you can’t beat it. We have outstanding medical centers downtown that people from all over the world come to visit. We have no state income tax. The laws down here are friendly to gun owners and of course, it’s a die-hard red state. My son currently attends a public school here and is reading Huck Finn in his 8th grade class. We have no teacher unions. We did have him in private school as well for K-5th grade... both options are available and top notch.

I would avoid Austin, although the weather is nice, it is a liberal college town. I visit my mother-in-law there once every few months and it’s absolute torture.

And as for the comments about us hating Yankees down here... not true (I was one when I moved down here). What we don’t like is people coming here and trying to tell us how to live and trying to change us. If you don’t like our way of life down here... get out.

What a beautiful place. I went to Girl Scout camp there every summer for almost 10 years. Being a young person, I wasn’t worried about politics, but I gather the area is in a conservative part of the state?

I’m from NJ too. I have friends who moved down to Texas 10 years ago. I’ve been down there several times and would choose that state over all others to retire. I’m hoping I could sell my home and move down in the next 2 years. There is so much uncertainty in the economy right now, that my husband and I are a bit apprehensive about making any rash decisions since we still have to work another 5-6 years before we can retire. I don’t think it’s easy finding a job when you’re in your late 50’s. But Texas is definitely on the horizon......

We do encounter some of that here in NC too, we are transplants. If you stay in a larger city where a higher % of residents are transplants, mainly because of job transfers etc you will have less trouble. Get into some of the little, outlying towns and I think you run into more of the, "You ain't from 'round here are ya boy?", type of native.

I live in Ohio and can’t wait to leave the state.

If those are your choices move to Texas. North Carolina would be my second choice.

Ohio is quickly becoming a southern appendage of Michigan. Hell, if Kasich can’t turn things around they might as well let Michigan annex it.

I love the smell of pines on a hot summer day, sitting on the porch swing with book in hand and a tall glass of ice tea on the side table, just listening to the cicadas buzz. The wirkd seems so slow and calm.

I hated the red clay when my children were little and it was so hard to get their clothes clean and it does make gardening a problem. The soil needs lots of amendments.

I’ve lived in five eastern states. Of them Virginia is the best ... by far.

Schools: we have standards of learning, put in by George Allen when he was governor. Schools are expected to teach a real curriculum in each subject.

Taxes: not the lowest, but better than average. Income tax is 5.75%.

Gun laws: I’m not an expert here but I think we’re OK. Certainly Mike Bloomberg is not welcome in these parts.

Cost of living: varies throughout state. Avoid Northern Virginia, otherwise you should be able to find something nice at a reasonable cost in most parts of the state. Charlottesville can be pricey but you wouldnt want to live there because it’s a blip of blue in a red state. However, areas surrounding Cville can be both reasonable and conservative, and you’d have access to the outstanding medical care in Cville. UVA Medical school is there. Gorgeous scenery. The Blue Ridge mountains are breathtaking. We wanted to retire with a mountain view. Didnt work out but looking was tremendous fun.

In terms of weather, VA Beach probably has the nicest. I dont know about medical care down there.

We’re a right to work state. Our legislature only meets two months of the year, which limits the damage it can do.

You can search VA real estate at a great site called franklymls.com. Also check out discussion boards at city-data.com and all the stats at bestplaces.net

Regarding Southeast Utah, my family and I enjoy the beauty of the area and the isolation outside of the small towns. Because much of the area is so desolate it’s very pristine. There’s just something very clean about the desert anyway. The trouble is how to make a living there. We actually like all of Utah that we have seen. We drove through the SLCity area a few years back. It’s huge. If one isn’t independently wealthy, there are plenty of metropolitan/suburban areas to choose from. We love it here in Colorado, but we could see ourselves living in Utah one day.

It really depends on the individual. Someone who comes down and starts ragging on people for their drawl probably isn’t going to make a lot of friends.

Also, a lot of non-natives can’t grasp Texas pride.

With that said, let me add that my Dad came here from NYC a little under 50 years ago. My husband has been here for 22 years. Neither of them are Texans by birth but you’d never know it. And they wouldn’t leave for all the tea in China. :D

I've been to all three many times (and lived in two of them) and there's some things that appeal to me about all of them.

Texas, hands down.

I'd live there myself except I can't stand the Dallas Cryboys and I don't want to get lynched for rooting for my favorite team...anybody playing the Cryboys.

One word of advice...live as far away from the inner city (of any of the choices) as you can...well, two words of advice...leave any, "we did it this way in Joisey" attitudes behind...when in Rome...

It’s not my state, I just live here. Concur about the gun laws, like I said we’re working on it. Agree also about OPD. However, several towns in the state have violated the US Constitution as well as the NE state constitution by banning guns in their town so OPD isn’t alone in their free interpretations.

We call it the Tax Me State. Unless, of course, you are a mega corporation, then the state gives you all kinds of tax breaks to open here.

All that said, the crime rate is low and there are jobs. Which is more than can be said about NJ, which is where the thread originator is from.

well, I would like to say a few things about Ohio. There are fabulous medical facilities from Cleveland to Cincinnati, and many fine small college towns in between. The cost of living is pretty low, and schools away from the cities, especially in smaller towns with universities are really great. Just stay away from the cities and you will be fine. The farther south you go, the milder the winters. I have lived in Ohio all of my working life and raised our kids in Ashland and it was a quality of life that is hidden in “fly-over country” Would not trade it for a minute...however, retired to warmer climate now!
