I had never seen this before but some of you may have. Enjoy! The writing below is not mine but someone else’s explaining.

Very interesting!

This is an actual film made of the surrender ceremony of the Japs to McArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945. Actual voice of the General. Never been shown to the general public before. We always saw the “stills” but never the film itself.

Historical Footage: Japanese Surrender Signing Aboard Battleship Missouri - Sunday Sept. 2, 1945.

An important piece of history.

(Just Wanna be Your) Teddy Bear
~ Elvis Presley ~

How many do you have? Do you still have your childhood Teddy Bear? Did you ever wonder how Teddy Bears got their name? For any of you who didn't know - or don't remember the story behind the name of these squeezable, huggable little stuffed bears.......very briefly, it goes like this:

In November of 1902, Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th President, went on a hunting trip near Little Sunflower River in Mississippi. To make sure that the President had an easy target and wouldn't go home empty-handed, his hosts had captured and stunned a little bear cub and tied him to a tree. President Roosevelt, however, refused to shoot the defenseless cub and made them set it free.

The press who were covering Roosevelt's visit quickly heard of the incident, and the Washington Star's political cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon of the incident entitled Drawing the line at Mississippi. The cartoon, which emphasized the helplessness of the cub, was printed in all the papers, and Roosevelt's popularity soared as a result of his actions. For the rest of his political career President Roosevelt's mascot was 'Teddy's Bear', which Berryman continued to use in all his cartoons and which played a key part in the Presidents successful re-election campaign of 1905.

I have stood on the deck of The USS Missouri, no9w berthed at Ford Island and Open to the Public. One can stand at the place where the surrender was signed, and look over at The USS Arizona Memorial.

Talk about Goose Bumps!

We only got into the 20s and that was cold enough!

I too have stood on the deck of the USS MISSOURI when I was 12 years old. Mighty Mo was moored in Bremerton, WA at the time. I was a paperboy at the time and because of subscriptions I accumulated I won a trip to Seattle and Bremerton.

I’ll never forget standing near the plaque and reading those words commemorating the surrender.

My father-in-law was aboard the Mighty Mo and witnessed the surrender. He was stationed aboard a submarine and I guess crew members from ships in harbor were invited. Got a picture of the surrender in family photo albums.

Also, my ship, USS PIEDMONT (AD-17) was in Tokyo Bay at the time. Many years after the surrender, PIEDMONT became my home for 3 1/2 years.

Just more childhood memories! :)

Reminds me of one of the teddy bears I have. I was at work one day and a delivery guy came into the office looking for none other than, me!

I remarked to him.."Wow...somebody loves me!" I opened the box and it was a teddy bear wearing a gold shirt that said.."Sombody Loves You" and it was signed by the hubby!

I was the envy of the office..lol.

Hi, All,

It's warmed up to 10 degrees now, according to the thermometer outside. Thanks for the cute posts today - still don't want to stay here long for fear of getting shut down again, and I had several personal teddy bears to post (from a couple of years ago) but need to add some and delete some. :) Will post this right now:

Received this as a gift at a Veteran's Day program three years ago. It has a button to push and voices sound off "Dear Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Guardsman and Veteran..." Pretty Cool.

from the Texas board

The blackouts will last 10 to 45 minutes per neighborhood. The locations and durations of the blackouts will be determined by local utilities.

CenterPoint Energy said it began the rolling blackouts at about 5:45 a.m. and an average of 330,000 customers are affected at a time.

“This is a statewide emergency and CenterPoint Energy is complying with direct orders from ERCOT,” said Scott Prochazka, division senior vice president of CenterPoint Energy’s electric transmission and delivery operations. “Although we realize this is an inconvenience for our customers, these controlled rolling outages are planned emergency measures designed to avoid potentially longer, and more widespread power outages. We will continue these rolling outages until we receive direction from ERCOT that the electric supply in Texas has stabilized.”

CenterPoint Energy said it has pre-determined which circuits/power lines will be systematically brought off-line or curtailed across its entire service territory, but has not released a schedule to the public.

Hospitals, nursing homes, water treatment plants and public service facilities are generally excluded from the blackouts

02-02-2011 (Afternoon Update): The Electric Reliability Council of Texas issued a notice that rotating outages are no longer needed at this time; however, there is a strong possibility that they will be required again this evening or tomorrow, depending on how quickly the disabled generation units can be returned to service.
