Petra is back as Classic Petra (Vanity)
Classic Petra ^ | February 24, 2011 | DJMacWoW

Posted on 02/24/2011 11:29:08 AM PST by DJ MacWoW

The Christian rock band, Petra, has come together again with the original members: Bob Hartman, Greg X Volz, John Lawry, Louie Weaver and Mark Kelly. They have a new CD called Back to the Rock. I have it and it IS classic Petra. There are two new songs, Back to the Rock and Too Big to Fail. The others are redone and STILL GREAT.

They will be on tour but unfortunately, so far it's only a few places in the US.

Thursday June 30 Cornerstone, Chicago, Ill
Sunday July 31 Kingdom Bound, Darien Center, New York
Thursday August 4th Soulfest, Billford, New Hampshire

This is one of the few Christian rock bands that sand Scriptural music.

“Sand”? I'm not sure what that means. I will assume it is a metaphor for being polished using the sandpaper of Scripture.

These bands don’t make Christianity better, they make rock music worse.

Be honest about it with yourself. Almost all rock music is sexual in nature. Makes people want to dance, and dancing leading to, gee, what do you think.... Other secular music is made to get people angry and lead to violence. Some music forms lead to both.

Just don’t kid yourself. I am a Chirstian. I listen to a few very select bands. It is worldly music. I would not play it in church, that is not where it belongs. A “christian band” that has a secular riffs but thinks it’s okay because they changed the words is kidding itself.
It’s like someone trying to say they’ve developed a God-approved “christian porn” because the explicit sex scenes only take place with people who are married to each other and the scenes are much more artful and tasteful than secular porn movies.

Especially the bands that take secular rock songs and just change the lyrics.

There was one clip I saw of a ‘christian rocker’ over in Russia in the early 1990s shortly after the iron curtain fell, and was singing some christian words to Elvis’ Blue Suede shoes with the same kinds of movements used (save for the pelvic thrusts). The kids had no idea what the hell he was saying, they were just dancing to the music.

That’s why just changing the words but keeping the dance beat and heavy drum doesn’t work. It’s still secular music that appeals to the natural in a person, not the spiritual.

Your opinion. Any music that has Scriptural references such as Grave Robber and Clean is Scripturally sound to me.

1 John 1:9, John 15:3
Words & Music by Bob Hartman
You may see me stumble, you may see me fall
You may see me cornered with my back against the wall
Maybe incognito, maybe out to lunch
Maybe caught redhanded or maybe just a hunch
I'm clean, clean clean before my Lord
I'm clean, clean clean before my Lord
Like a spotless lamb I'm blameless in His sight
With no trace of wrong left to right
I'm clean, clean, clean
Kneeling in the closet begging daily bread
There may be a skeleton hanging overhead
Where are my accusers, nowhere to be found
They all dropped their stones when the master came around
I've missed the mark, I can't deny it
I can't condone or justify it
But I've done nothing that His blood can't wash away
When I take it to the cross and start to pray

I just got the CD. Wait until you hear Back to the Rock! Love it! It's exactly about what you'd think. Building on THE Rock or on shifting sand.

"And he built his house on the rock of Jesus and it still stands today"

Still singing Scripture. :-D

I’ve heard your argument my entire life. It is wrong logically, but more importantly wrong Biblically. Now if you do not want to go there I do not blame you.

To read sexualization into everything tells more about you than the object you are attacking. Listen to Third Day, if you are drifting to sexual thoughts there is something seriously wrong with you. Even that said, I can support my stance on Love songs that have no “Christian” theme. It is amazing how God used marriage to illustrate his love for us. Have you read the Song of Solomon? I suggest you don’t if you are sensitive.

There was a generation that once screamed at the top of their lungs: How dare you put an organ in the church!

In the late 19th century...the Southern Baptist convention had a knock down drag out about the same songs we cherish today. They thought of them as radical.

These are statements of fact. Do with them what you will.

“There was a generation that once screamed at the top of their lungs...”

My 16-year old pretty much only listens to Christen rock. Some of it I’ll listen to. But not the “screamo” stuff. I always kid him as the tone sounds like the cross between Jim Morrison’s yells and a goat getting butchered. I can’t understand the words - but I’ll fake it and scream in my best death rattle “Jesus loves me this I know...” (And then tell him “Ya know, the music is supposed to at least TRY to fit the lyrics.”

It Is Finished

In the heat of early morning on a hill
They call The Skull
The roaring of the angry mob
Had settled to a lull

All eyes were cast upon the man
Whose hands and feet were bound
They saw Him cry in anguish
When they heard the hammer pound

They saw the bloody woven thorns with
Which His head was crowned
They watched the bloody cross of wood
Be dropped into the ground

The soldiers gambled for His clothes
They watched them win and lose
They saw the sign above His head
That said "King of the Jews

It is finished
And the sky grew black as the night
It is finished
And the people scattered in fright

The work had been done
Redemption had been won
The war was over without a fight
It is finished

They searched His face for anger
For vengeance in his stare
Instead of eyes that burned with hate
A look of love was there

He prayed for their forgiveness
And bowed His battered head
And no one knew the meaning
Of the final words He said

It is finished
And the sky grew black as the night
It is finished
And the people scattered in fright

The work had been done
Redemption had been won
The war was over without a fight
It is finished

The provision has been made
The foundation has been laid
He paid the ransom due
And tore the temple veil in two
And opened up the way
For me and you

It is finished

It is finished
And the sky grew black as the night
It is finished
And the people scattered in fright

The work had been done
Redemption had been won
The war was over without a fight
It is finished

Don't forget about the sexually charged lyrics of "The Coloring Song"

Red is the color of the blood that flowed
Down the face of Someone Who loved us so
He's the perfect man, He's the Lord's own son,
He's the Lamb of God, He's the only one
That can give us life, that can make us grow,
That can make the love between us flow.

Blue is the color of a heart so cold
It will not bend when the story's told
Of the love of God for a sinful race
Of the blood that flowed down Jesus face
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can keep our hearts from growing cold.

Gold is the color of the morning sun
That shines so freely an every one
It's the sun above that keeps us warm
It's the Son of love that calms the storm
That can give us life that can make us grow,
That can turn our mornings into gold.

Brown is the color of the autumn leaves
When the winter comes to the barren trees
There is birth, there is death, there is a plan
And there's just one God, and there's just one man
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make our sins as white as snow

That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can turn our mornings into gold.
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can keep our hearts from growing cold.
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make the love between us flow.

Ah yes! AND:

Hollow Eyes

Matthew 25:35-46

Words & Music by Bob Hartman

Another day in Nigeria the children beg for bread
The crops failed, the well ran dry
When they lost the watershed
A baby dies, its mother cries the children gather 'round
They're wondering what the day will bring
Will they be the next one found
Do you dare to look into their hollow eyes
In the crowded sheds the children lay their heads
To escape the Haitian heat
The hunger pains drive them to the street
Wondering if today they'll eat
Some found food in the refuse heap
Others find disease
Some find it harder just to live
When they can die with ease
Do you dare to look into their hollow eyes
The least of these is hungry
The least of these is sick
The least of these needs clothing
The least of these needs drink
The least of these knows sorrow
The least of these knows grief
The least of these suffers pain
And Jesus is his name

He had SO many great songs. I love to crank up "I Blew Up the Clinic Real Good" at full blast rolling down the street.

My favorite album of his was "I Predict 1990", but I pull them all out from time to time.

No one could write lyrics like he could. So many Christian songs today seem to be mindless praise songs, but he could tell a powerful message without even mentioning God. Made him a bit unpopular in some Christian circles.

Hey don’t get me wrong, there is a place for romantic songs. All I am saying is don’t kid yourself about the music you’re listening to. And realize that there’s a place for secular music, just don’t try to claim it’s by any means Christian. Rock music is secular music.

What I find interesting is that you somehow want to make a distinction on the words but not the music. Try some hard core rock and try singing something beautiful to it, it won’t work.

Pop rock is secular music. Hard rock is secular. Top 40 is secular. Techno rock is secular. Punk rock is secular. Thrash is secular. Speed metal rock is secular. You want to somehow claim music isn’t secular just because they change the words but keep the music secular? I don’t buy it.

Further, if you are claiming this is true, that if you change the words but play secular music, and THAT is now spirutual and Christian, then are you also willing to then point to every band that has lines praising the devil and satan and killing off believers and telling people hell’s a great place to be, also as spiritual (un Christian) and in fact, anti-christian? Like Dio’s Holy Diver (where the cover shows a demon drowning a tied up priest), AC-DC’s “Highway to Hell”, Kiss’ “Heaven’s on Fire”, etc, etc etc? Dio by the way claims he is a Christian.

All I an say is my observations from watching people dance to secular music and so-called christian rock songs. I’ve seen the video of crowds at Christian thrash and Christian punk concerts. They are acting no different than their secular counterparts and much of the time you can’t even tell what they’re saying.

You can’t separate the spiritual from the music. It does make a difference.

Put it this way, if you’d put Christian thrash on in your church and think it’s totally wonderful and God-approved, you are the one that has the problem. These are people who are trying to claim they are putting out a spiritual message by wrapping it up in a more palatable, worldly veneer.

They all look like secular rock musicians. Their videos are all shot to look just like any other rock video. You think because some of them have cross tattoos or wear a cross or say “Thank You Jesus!” that sets them apart? Secular folks wear crosses and thank Jesus after the touchdown.

Personally, I love old-time Gospel, but Christian “rock” is just ridiculous.

And therein lies your problem. You cannot see past your own bias. You are probably one of those people who, back in the 16th century, would have been screaming "Bring back the chanting monks." You are probably one of those who would have taken an axe to the organ.

It is OK to have a "like." I actually like gospel as well. One of my radio presets is 90.5, which is a southern gospel station here in Houston (KJIC). I don't listen to a lot of Christian music, at least not music that is current. If I am listening to the radio in the car, I am mostly listening to my podcasts of Ravi Zacharias or J Vernon McGee...or listening to 105.7 KHCB. I listen to a lot of scripture as well.

But...my job in the kingdom is that of helping churches reach their communities...and the number one reason I find that churches fail is their tradition (their bias). They prefer their comfort over their community. They would rather be comfortable on Sunday morning...even if it means people go to hell. THEY come first...not the lost within their community. I see it everywhere. That is not what Jesus intended for His people.

And no...its not about being seeker sensative. The seeker sensative movement is garbage. Its about Form over Function. There are 6 functions a church must perform in order to be a New Testament church. The form can change and God gives us that flexability.
