I know a guy who often asks me if I want my clock cleaned.

I always tell him no.

I can’t imagine why he keeps asking.

Oh by all means! Get a coarse wire brush and give it a good scrub and then varnish it to prevent that nasty corrosion!
That way any value it might have will be gone and you won’t have to be carefull with it anymore.

There is a possibility that the lamp is not bronze at all, and if you clean or polish it, you might get an unwelcome surprise.

Google “spelter”.

No, please don't. You will not like the results and the value will plummet. I suspect the lamp will look like a modern reproduction once polished. Tearing the patina off the lamp would be a shame.

Consider an 80 year old woman with a face lift, botox etc. it just does not look natural.

Don’t polish old Brass, dust only.

If it has this mark it's Salem Bros.

Do NOT polish it. Get a good emery cloth and take the dirt off. You will know when it is clean bt do not polish it. I use emery cloth on my inside door knobs to take fingerprints, dirt and dust off. I have a collection of antique fire extinguishers and DO have them polished but they are not as treasured as that lamp is.

In searching the Internet I've found some Salem Bro. lamps from about the early 20’s, most worth a few hundred dollars at most, not Tiffany but not junk either!

Remember the hammerhead on the roadshow who stripped his American highboy?

What a nightmare.

I wished for world peace, I got a pile of dirt with the explanation "this is piece of world you asked for."

I always liked the X-Files episode centered around the genie. Mulder wishes for world peace and finds himself the world's lone inhabitant.

That's a $600-$800 lamp as is. If you clean it to original condition you can increase its value to about $100. With the money you save, you can go out an buy another lamp.

Was visiting a friend and fellow dealer at a coin show not too long ago.

He was close to hysterical when I saw him as a couple whom he had offered $15,000 for a rare trade dollar coin had returned to accept his offer. They had thought it over for a few days, decided to accept but thought ‘ Golly gee, maybe he’ll offer more if we polish it ‘.

His offer after the fine polishing job? $1,500.00

You should see the value increase when you strip off that old varnish and refinish that nice Chippendale dresser.

Absolutely agree.

There are specialists who deal with antique repair/restoration, but it takes a SPECIALIST!

Not somebody who just bought a pack of 0000 steel wool!
