Remakes of Popular Songs - Which One Is Better - The Original Or The Remake...?
4/06/11 | MplsSteve

You know, I started thinking about popular music and how artists do remakes of popular songs.

Here are two songs - one from the original artist and the other who re-did it. Which version was better?

"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" The Byrds (1965)- from the album "Mr Tambourine Man"

"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" Tom Petty (1989) - from the album "Full Moon Fever"

++++++++++++++++++++++

"The First Cut Is The Deepest" Rod Stewart (1976) - from the album "A Night On The Town"

"The First Cut Is The Deepest" Sheryl Crow (2003) - from the album "The Very best Of Sheryl Crow"

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, I know that other artists have done versions of these songs too. If you think another artist has done a better version, let's hear about it.

Saw Great White live at a suburban fest a few years back. Hubby said that year beforehand that we’re getting closer to the stage this time. Wrong year/band to do it cuz I swear I have some minor premanent hearing loss. They were really good but it was very, very loud:)

Better remakes imho

  1. The lion sleeps tonight compare the original Zulu version "Mbube" by Solomon Linda to the one that we all know
  2. Megadeth's version of "paranoid" knock's Black Sabbath's even though BS's is very good as well
  3. Alien Ant Farm's version of "smooth criminal"
  4. Singin' in the Rain by Gene Kelly is the best imho
  5. Metallica's cover version of Diamond Head's "Am I evil?"
  6. "Soul Man" remade by the Blue Brothers
  7. Anything by Apocalyptica -- I love classical and metal and this combination can be awesome (but that may be just my take!)

“Signs”.....Five Man Electrical Band; popular acoustic remake by one of my favorites, Tesla...

..but you HAVE to go with the original. FMEB was so unbelievably underrated it’s criminal.

WOW, thanks for the memories! I was lucky enough to see them in 1968 in the Curry Hicks Cage at UMass along with the Association. (There is an odd matchup.)

"Pancho and Lefty" is a song written by the singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Van Zandt first recorded it for his 1972 album.

City of New Orleans is a folk song written by Steve Goodman, describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans via the Illinois Central Railroad in bittersweet and nostalgic terms. Goodman got the idea while traveling on the eponymous train for a visit to his wife's family. He performed the song for Arlo Guthrie in the Quiet Knight, a bar in Chicago, and Guthrie agreed to add it to his repertoire. The song was a hit for Guthrie on his 1972 album Hobo's Lullaby, and is now more closely associated with him, although Goodman performed it until his death in 1984. The song has also been covered by Willie Nelson, John Denver, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, Gerard Cox and others.

"The Seventh Son", also recorded as "Seventh Son", is a song written by Willie Dixon. It was released as a single by Willie Mabon on Chess Records in 1955. It has also been recorded by artists such as Johnny Rivers on his album Meanwhile Back at the Whisky a Go Go, John Mellencamp, on the album Rough Harvest, and Billy "Crash" Craddock, on the album You Better Move On. - Wiki

Great White’s better cover of “Once Bitten Twice Shy.” I hear they burn down the house with it.

Remixes of some 70s-80s pop hits that are pretty well-done.

Same here for some Verve Jazz recordings of the 50s-60s.
