The Federal Bureau of Investigation has this last week opened what it calls "the vault", a collection of thousands of documents and memos that have been unclassified.

One of those memos confirms the crash at Roswell.

It is a PDF file, and the FBI server is running slow, so I will transpose part of it here:

The following information was furnished to SA

An investigator for the Air Force stated that three so-called flying saucers hed been recovered in New Mexico. They were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots.

According to Mr. (redacted), informant, the saucers were found in New Mexico due to the fact that the Government has a very high powered radar set-up in that area and it is believed the radar interferes with the controling mechanism of the saucers.

No further evaluation was attempted by SA (redacted) concerning the above.

I think what you are missing is the FBI interviewer didn’t get this from the Air Force. It was furnished by someone who said they got it from the Air Force. It starts: The following information was provided to SA ________ by _______.. An investigator for the Air Force..

After the redacted name, it is all third person story, not direct confirmation of anything without knowing who the informant was.

not just that. if there would have been the slightest credibility to it, mr. hoover would have been on it like a duck on a junebug.

fact is, mr. hoover — according to a friend who was an agent during that era, who still calls him “mr. hoover” — wanted a memo written for every phone call or report received by the bureau. he wanted every minute accounted for. there are no doubt memos involving wrong number calls to fbi field offices.

There are a lot of extrapolations and nuttiness out there about this stuff, but it is based on some disclosed government documents.
