Mac Users More Liberal Than Windows Users

adeelarshad82 writes

"A recent survey conducted on 400,000 people — in which 52% of respondents were self-described PC (Windows) people, 25% were Mac users and 23% were neither — showed that Mac users are more politically liberal than their PC-using counterparts. 58% of Mac users were 'liberal,' as compared to 38% of PC users. Amongst other things, the survey also indicated that Mac users were, on average, more urban, younger and more educated than PC users, which could potentially be a contributing factor toward being more liberal."

This poll is useless and not surprising. Macs are more used at universities, and we know what type of people are there, from professors to the students. This is starting to change as Macs are starting to make inroads in the business world. Macs are also more expensive, and therefore the middle class are more likely to have PC’s.

Another thing...ever notice liberals drive Subarus?
Or I should say, the majority of Subuaru owners tend to be liberals

Tools are tools. I use my Alienware for online games, serious research, and general 'heavy lifting'. I have an iPad 2 and a Samsung GalaxyS phone for work that I use for mobility, communications and light research.

The range of tools available and the flexibility that modern programs and apps provide a great competitive edge to anyone who takes the time to learn them. Apple has a solid image as a hip, adventurous product line, and I'm happy to redirect that marketing appeal against my own clients. The iPad 2 is good kit, but it definitely wows your client when you casually do something useful on it. They don't need to know I did my homework earlier with more powerful, less sexy tools.

As far as the political considerations of it, that analysis is weak, but on the right track. "Young, urban, educated", you say? While folks in that group may be liberal in general, they're something else in specific. To wit;

Trendy, image-conscious, and easily fooled by marketing.

Kind of explains their affinity for Messr Obama, no?

It’s true, I bought my Mac(s) because they weren’t Windows. After 30 years in the PC camp, I am finally Windows free and ain’t looking back. It’s gotten to the point that when my GF wants me to troubleshoot her W7 laptop, I damn near feel like pulling my hair out. I HATE that thing!

Powershell is also free, and was back-ported to run on XP SP2 and later. MS is switching over all of it’s system administration to using it, but it’s really a general purpose shell / scripting language that gives you access to all the .net libraries.

Once Mac went to the Wintel architecture it was pretty much an admission that their previous systems could not compete against the speed and cost of the Intel based systems.

The Mac GUI is too cutsie for my taste and was a fan of Irix from SGI. Even SGI couldn’t compete against the Wintel design and has abandoned their Irix based systems and has since filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

I’m one of those horrible Conservatives, and I’ve owned nothing but Macs.

This thread is too binary:

Linux!

I was just thinking the same thing. All of the linux users in my household are conservative-leaning independents, although the sample size (1) is probably too small to draw any legitimate conclusions.

My purely anecdotal observation is that linux users are generally hardcore computer geeks who do not ascribe to conventional political affiliations.

Most mac users I know bought one because “it’s not a windows machine so I’m not supporting GREEEEEDDDDD”.

This Mac user bought one because I was sick of viruses and the Blue Screen of Death. Four years later, my iMac is still running strong and virus-free. Two years ago I bought a Windows laptop for work use. I remembered immediately why I switched to Mac.

Nothing smug, green or liberal in my decision to use a Mac.

Don’t care. I will NEVER go back to Windows.

You missed the meeting. Windows doesn't want you.

This is not really news. there had been a noticeable difference as early as 1996.

However, every rule has its exceptions

A well known conservative Apple user.

Yes, they are different. For one thing they don’t feel pain the way we do.

“What about those of us who use both?”

Sounds like a RHINO thing to me...a moderate, middle-of-the-road approach. One of those...’can’t make up my mind’ approach.

The only consolation for you any of you Mac people is that Bill Gates is also a leftist. :)

People that own computers are probably more likely to be lib.
And consider this. Apple products ain’t cheap. Those that are sucking on the gov teet are more likely to have a non-Apple product.

I’d guess it is the old peerr pressure stuff...you know “see you have a mac there for you are liberal so if you really want to run with the herd”.... of course this is being typed on a MacBookPro and I’m probably on a scale of 1-100 in conservatism somewhere in the 95%+ range. They didn’t ask me....
