I knew there weren’t many people up here, just wasn’t sure of the population. I’ve lived here 12 years, my hubby was raised here and wanted to retire from the military here. Marquette probably has the biggest population in da UP. It’s about 2.5 hours from me. And I think the most liberal county. The rest seem to be pretty conservative over all.

Anywhere near a lot of farms and forests, where you can get or grow your own vegetables and livestock and hunt for meat, and chop wood for heat and cooking. I live in semi-rural southeastern Pennsylvania. I am investigating buying a windmill and a solar panel for power; it is very windy here though we do not get tornadoes or other very severe weather. I have an acre of land and I can farm all of it if necessary. The folks behind us have three acres and already have chickens and goats.

People underestimate the effect the great lakes have on Michigan weather. We get some cold but nothing like Minnesota or North Dakota. They also tend to suck the power out of the violent storms of the plains. Its a great climate for producing the right kind of food crops as well.

I’ve got my eye on Grand Marais if I ever move to the UP. Its a beautiful small isolated town with a nice harbor on Lake Superior.

What if Jesus loves you so much, He lets you live pass 100? LOL

Northern Minnesota is also very similar to rural Michigan. Other than in the Twin Cities, where the Liberals control the entire state by Mob Rule, the rest of the state is very Conservative. People live thrifty and have strong survival skills.

There is no need for air conditioning, food is either in the back yard, next door at the closest cattle farm, or in the woods that is an easy walk away from the house. Winter is cold, but the woods provides heat and economic alternatives to gas and oil. The best part of that cold is, it keeps those warm blooded, weak Southerners down where they belong, grouped together in their urban Socialist sprawl, where they can prey off of each other.

Beef is also 3 times as cheap here than in the grocery store. All you need is a large freezer. 2 or 3 large Whitetail and several geese and ducks, fresh Walleye from Lake of the Woods, (The year around) all adds to the endless bounty and extremely easy and economic living for most all resourceful people who live here. One thing for sure, it quickly weeds out the deadbeats, which is the best reason for living here.

I’m trying to come up with a way to move to Southern Tenn somewhere from south of Nashville. Was there for a week, came back to Houston and still suffering from the damned smog. My doctor said he’s constantly running allergy panels on his patients and they come back negative. It’s the city polution. I gotta’ get outta’ here! If the planet survives that long.

So what do all of you think about this list? Which area of the country do you think is best for those Americans who are seeking to prepare themselves for the coming economic collapse?

I think you and glen beck should get together in the same bunker.

I'll keep my guns loaded {as always} and stay right where I am {Western PA}.

Good water and food for 90 days, thousands of rounds of ammo, multiple guns and knowledge of outdoor survival will give my family an edge for staying OK.

If the Country is still in peril after three months, survival mode will have long since been replaced by predator mode and things that will be occurring are too gruesome to contemplate and certainly can't be posted here.

Texas, plenty of oil, food and guns. And the guts to use them.

People always talk about fleeing to the south but that's where all the criminal elements and leeches will run to as well.

If I leave southern Michigan it will be to head north to a slice of heaven I found.

I find it rather amusing that the Southeast has nothing to offer but poverty, crime and difficulty in getting around. Supposedly this article was concerned with where you could best live when TSHTF. So, the author didn't mention that you can garden year round in the deep south and there is more wildlife to eat than you can shake a stick at. All in all, I'm pretty tickled that he chose to write off the SE.

I do like the UP. I also take trips on the North Shore of Superior in the Fall. (Breathtaking beauty!) But Lake of the Woods is at my back door and I fish a lot for trophy Walleyes, down-rigging, reef drifting, etc. So many exciting things to do at little expense right at one’s finger tips!

Ah, near the WI/MI border. Yea that is a pretty area. We are maybe 3 hours from there.

I lived in Oceola county Michigan for a while and was surprised at how many people’s primary source of food came from the woods and lakes.

If you can catch your limit of deer, turkey, and salmon, your meat is pretty well taken care of for the year. I went mushroom hunting with a local a few times and filled an S-10 pickup with morels every time we went. (we canned them) That doesn’t even count the other hunting and fishing a person could do let alone raising their own critters and gardening.

One point was missed in the summary of the "upper mid-west".

The point of rampant, pervasive, all-encompassing socialism/communism.

I give you the once great, but still communist, socialist, "rust belt" state of Wisconsin whose capital is Mosco....er....Madison....with it's neighboring satellite, Minnesota.

I met Steve Emery some years ago while fishing before his days as a fishing guide. He’s very typical of the kind of people who populate the north.

I'm kind of wondering what you're going to do when the drone puts a couple of missles "down your smokestack" at 2AM....just curious.

"One of my favorite places east of the Mississippi River are the mountains along the Tennessee/North Carolina border. If you must be in the eastern half of the United States, that is not a bad choice."

Upper East Tennessee is the best place in the USA. Climate is clement, tectonics are quiet, nice mix of industry, agriculture and wilderness, conservative electorate, and you'll easily find churches with all-day singings and dinner on the grounds.

I'm an immigrant from the Rust/Snow Belt, myself. And come to think of it, I don' really want hordes of other immigrants crowding in here.

Maybe I should lie, and say it's a BAD place, you wouldn't like it, don't come here whatever you do! Shoo! Shoo!

The point of rampant, pervasive, all-encompassing socialism/communism.

When the going gets tough, those folks are going to get lost. (Most likely south and west)
