8th-Grader Punished After Reporting Students Had Sex On Bus
WHIO-TV ^ | 5/13/11

An eighth-grade charter school student who said she saw two classmates having sex on a bus during a group spring break trip is being punished for reporting the incident, her mother said.

The girl, who goes to Dayton View Academy, waited until she got home to tell her mom what she saw. The school is punishing her for not telling chaperons who were on the bus at the time it happened.

"If you tell something on a kid, you have to look for the response from that child and at the time," said Saundra Roundtree, the girl's mother. "She was afraid. I told her 'don't say anything when you are at school. I will handle it.' "

Roundtree said her daughter won't be able to go to her eighth-grade prom or the class picnic. The students who reportedly had sex are being punished as well, but Roundtree feels as though disciplining her daughter sends the wrong message. She added that all eight chaperons were sitting in the front of the bus watching a movie when the incident occurred.

Teaching kids that in a liberal society,it is important not to embarrass those in charge.Effectively that is most public schools out there.

Best thing the parents can do is contact the school and get that changed..

I’m surprised at the boy’s reaction, because most guys know darn well what the ramifications of this are.

My suggestion for penalties is related to making darned sure that girls/women don’t use this tactic against innocent boys/men.

Even if this boy were still a child, he would have been marked for life. I just think it’s fair to make sure everyone is playing with the same stakes on the table, if they’re going to play these ‘games’.

I am sure the time between the charge and the truth being revealed, was very trying for everyone involved.

What happened to the girl, once they found out she lied?

My guess is that the informer was not one of Eric Holder's people, and the indecent-actors were Eric Holder's people.

Equal-outcome would dictate that if you punish one of Eric Holder's people, you have to find an excuse to punish someone who is not one of Eric Holder's people.

I personally think that a false accusation of rape should carry EXACTLY the same punishment as rape - stiff jail sentence.

And registration as a sex offender.

Sounds like the school is pissed that they couldn’t keep this “in house”.

I’m pretty confident that it was the mother that alerted the media.

This is just another example that common sense is all too uncommon. The school administrators certainly doesn’t have any, and the mother appears not to have any either. Either that or she’s shrewed as a fox and Geoffry Feiger already has his retainer.

IMO, the penalty for making such a false charge, should be made quite similar to the penalties for a rape.

Having seen it happen, I like your penalty ideas for a false rape charge very much.

That happened to me. I told about two of my fellow fifth-grade students kissing, and the wrath of the priests and nuns rained down... on me. I got slapped, poked, pinched, and called a liar. Their parents were big supporters of the Church, while my white trash parents barely made my tuition, so of course, I was a bad kid.

That was just the first step in my walk away from Catholicism.

Damn! The things I missed out on in 8th grade (and 9th and 10th etc.)

Same here. And you can add 11th and 12th grades for me.

this is the school thinking it is superior to parents.

they just don’t understand the family unit.

scared child tells parents. the end.

instead the school is telling children to “not make the school look bad”.

So we are to believe that only one student witnessed this feat, I’ll bet 3/4 of students knew what happened. It’s been a few years since my bus riding days but I don’t ever remember being told that if I saw someone having sex on the bus that it was my duty to report it immediately.

The again maybe if mom kept her pie hole closed her angel wouldn’t be in trouble.

Thank you. Frankly I expected a whole lot more push-back on those comments. Not surprisingly, I expected it from the people who claim that verbal abuse is just as bad as physical/sexual abuse, oh but wait, only if the verbal abuse comes from a nasty ole male.

Reason, equity, and justice is the goal here.

Well, people are human. I forgave and put all that behind me long ago. Stories like this bring back memories, but the pain is gone.

Obviously, unionized teachers. Consider the featherbedding. Eight teachers on one bus to supervise how many students on that same bus? Then the teachers all are sitting up in the front of the bus. How about two teachers on a bus, one at the back and one near the front so that each can view a group of students. Then how about them walking up and down the aisle every once in a while?

My remedy:
The offending students should be punished.
The eight teachers should be suspended for NOT doing their job.
The reporting student should be thanked by the school administration.
