Haven't seen the TV listings for this weekend but The Longesst Day is one of my favs. Also, in no particular order...

They Were Expendable
The Fighting Sullivans
To Hell And Back
Tora Tora Tora
Midway
Stalag 17
12 O'Clock High
The Enemy Below

A couple of others I enjoy catching from time to time...

Murphy's War
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
Hell in the Pacific

Not quite a "war movie" per say, but it's set with WWII as a back drop...

Island's in the Stream

And a newer movie about WWI that I have come to enjoy watching...

Fly Boys

"For authentic tanks, look for Cross of Iron with James Coburn. I think it may be the only movie I have ever seen with actual Russian T34s."

And one of my favorite movies as well ... I would love to get the music that plays over the closing credits as my cellphone ring ...

Come with me, Captain Stransky, and I'll show you where the Iron Crosses grow ...

[later]

"Captain! Stransky, g*d d*mn it, get off your ass!"
"I have to reload! How do I reload, Sergeant Steiner?"
[Sergeant Steiner walks off laughing uproariously.]

Band of Brithers is the best war movie I ever saw and Gettysburg is based on the best war story ever written, Killer Angels, IMHO

Heroes of Telemark is a movie about sabateurs in Norway, starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris. Kind of slow in some parts.

The Dam Busters is a British film about developing a new kind of round bomb to be dropped from low-flying planes. The bomb skips on the water until it hits a dam.

Von Ryan's Express is about escaping from a POW-camp in Italy, starring Frank Sinatra.

Captain Garth: How much can you decipher?

Commander Rochefort: Fifteen percent.

Captain Garth: Really decipher?

Commander Rochefort: Ten percent.

Captain Garth: Ten percent? That’s one word in ten, Joe! You’re *guessing*!

Commander Rochefort: [slightly hurt] We like to call it “analysis.”

Murphy’s War was great. Peter O’Toole acted the Murphy role to perfection. As I recall, the book was really good, too.

I dislike WW2 movies showing German Soldiers wearing WW1 helmets. It's a pet peeve of mine.

I agree in part, but how about simple plywood for sides etc. Boggies would be wrong but the shape would look more realistic. Hollywood was pretty good at that when they wanted to. I often thought of that for Battle of the Bulge and Patton. Really grated to see U.S tanks fighting each other.

“They Were Expendable”

I recommend that you watch “They Were Expendable” in black and white. The fake color version shows the chief petty officers and officers wear blue dungarees instead of khaki.
BTW, “Wing and a Prayer”(starring Don Ameche) was filmed on board a U.S. Navy Essex class carrier with great film footage of actual flight deck operations.

We are talking about older movies here but this should not be a problem from now and into the future of film making as they can now make tanks (or anything) digitally and make as many as they want and do anything they want them to do.

Not war movies in the conventional sense, but a couple worth mentioning are:

The Great Raid

Escape From Sobibor

Dam Busters is so good! Also, next time you watch it, see how much George Lucas ripped off from that movie for his attack on the Death Star!

The whole “Red Five standing bye” communications part of the attack and many other aspects were completely lifted from Dam Busters.

If you haven’t seen “A Walk in the Sun,” I recommend it.

It might be a little too graphic for your local library.
