SNIPPET: "Note: PWP stands for PassWord-Protected, meaning that a login is required to view - let alone participate in - discussions. Since some in the audience don't understand the significance of this, allow me to spell it out: if only members can read the forum, then anyone observed reading the forum is a member. They have zero deniability (they couldn't have accidentally "wandered into" the site), and they had to make the effort to join (an expression of intent).
While the goal here is to present a range of sites, the fact is that the jihadis themselves have largely coalesced at Shmukh and Ansar Arabic."

TOP TEN JIHADI FORUMS, AS OF 14 FEBRUARY, 2011
SNIPPET: Assembled with the help of my dear brothers in Fateh al-Islam (and their minders in the Syrian intelligence service). The [PWP] notation indicates the site is password protected. Theres nothing worse than the mournful wailing of analysts, graduate students, and reporters who find themselves locked out of their favorite forum. Join early, join often, save important discussions as you find them, try not to say anything too embarrassing, and if youre a civilian, make some effort to let your friendly neighborhood secret police know that youre a good guy, not a bad guy, so they dont have to waste time and money investigating you. Forums are not just websites, they are battlefields, and spectators are not particularly welcome by any of the combatants.

Al-Qaida Issues New Mail Bombing Threat
IPT News June 15, 2011
SNIPPET: The FBI has issued a new warning about an al-Qaida-inspired plot to assassinate key government and private sector individuals with mail bombs.
The plot is only aspirational, says a report reviewed by the Investigative Project on Terrorism. But FBI officials have expressed concern about the actions of lone wolf attackers already in the United States.
The threats follow a June 3 video featuring American al-Qaida member Adam Gadahn in which he encourages acts of individual jihad, members of several extremist Web forums posted names of companies and its leaders to target, the FBI warning said. That video appeared initially on the closed al-Qaida web forum Shumukh al-Islam.”

A martyrdom statement for Mahmoud Hamdan Nizal, who was known as Abu Dher al Urduni, was published by a member of the Shumukh al-Islam forum, which is frequented by members of al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. The statement was released on June 12, 2011 and translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.
Nizal was from the Jordanian city of Zarqa, the home town of slain al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi.”

A Very Odd Al Qaeda Hit LIst

SNIPPET: Today, The Atlantic Wire obtained the list of 179 names...
SNIPPET: A post first appeared on the password-protected Jihad discussion site Shumukh, Fox News reports, from someone identified as Al-Assad Al-Thaer urging supporters to compile the list of executives and officials who supported the war on our nation, calling them part of the Zionist Crusaders Alliance.
SNIPPET: We reached out to the Middle East Media Research Institute to ask if they had a copy of the list that had prompted the warnings. They provided it to us and MEMRI president Yigal Carmon explained how it was created. On June 6, a jihadist operating under the handle Yaman Mukhadad asked fellow users to contribute names of U.S. targets he would then provide to Al Qaeda leaders. This all took place on the web forum Shumoukh al-Islam. The web site is accredited by Al Qaeda but the list did not come from Al Qaeda, Carmon explained. Apparently, users in the forum were so enthusiastic about contributing names, Mukhadad asked them to stop. He said enough, enough explained Carmon. Then, on a second jihadist forum called Ansar al-Mujahideen, another user began soliciting names for a target list. According to Carmon, that was the 40-member list ABC News reported about yesterday. Carmon said the list he provided to The Atlantic Wire is the sum total from both crowdsourcing efforts.

SNIPPET: The Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), a shadowy transnational jihadi-takfiri media and translation network, released an English translation of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsulas (AQAP) statement eulogizing Al-Qaida Centrals (AQC) late founder-leader, Usama bin Laden. How Online Propaganda Works

June 23rd, 2011 | propaganda, Recruitment, social media
Shmukh user al-Sakit argues that you need a wide distribution of jihadi propaganda on mainstream forums in order to attract a small amount of people. He observes that the three top mainstream Arabic forums have one million users each. If you post jihadi propaganda to all of them, only 10% (300,000) are likely to look at it. Of those, 10% (30,000) will like what they see. Of those, 10% (3000) will embrace the idea of jihad. Of those, 10% (300) will propagandize. Of those, 10% (30) will go out to fight in a jihad. Of those, 10% (3) will seek martyrdom.
Thats much the way I think about it, which is why countering the effects of jihadi propaganda is so difficult. It just needs to mobilize a few.

Al Qaeda-linked website threatens Monrovia drone makers executives
By Richard Winton
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
July 1, 2011, 11:26 a.m.
SNIPPET: The targeting of corporate executives from military suppliers first came public in May. At a trial in Chicago, an accused terrorist, David Headley, acknowledged that a Pakistan-based branch of Al Qaeda had plotted to kill Robert Stevens, the head of Lockheed Martin. The company manufacturers drones prominently used in targeting Osama bin Laden and other members of the terror network.
The list came from the Al Qaeda-linked Ansar Al Mujahedeen jihadist forum and was first made public on the Homeland Security Today website.
The security website obtained a a jihadist hit list of 58 people that accompanied a June 6 Florida federal bulletin.

Headley Part of al-Qaida Plot to Attack Lockheed Martin
by IPT News May 31, 2011 at 6:35 pm
Self-confessed Mumbai plotter David Coleman Headley testified Tuesday that he was part of an al-Qaida inspired plot to assassinate the chief of U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
The plot was the brainchild of Ilyas Kashmiri, leader of the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), and a senior commander of al Qaidas deadly 313 Brigade.
Headley is the key prosecution witness in the ongoing terrorism trial of a Chicago businessman, Tahawuur Hussain Rana. He used Ranas immigration office in Mumbai as a cover to scout for targets for the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist strike. Ten gunmen from the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) are suspected of being behind the plot that killed 166 people, including six Americans.
Headley has pleaded guilty to his role in the attacks and agreed to cooperate with federal investigators in exchange for evading the death penalty.
Headley told the jury he used Ranas computer to research details about Lockheed Martin and its CEO for Kashmiri, who was outraged at American drone strikes in Pakistan and wanted to attack the U.S. defense contractor in retaliation.
There was a plan to kill him because he was making drones, Headley said.

“Jihadis Online: A Few Thoughts”
SNIPPET: “IV. For the practice of counterterrorism what matters is not what jihadis say so much as what the people they associate with have said or done; the content of the media they download, view, or listen to; and the degree to which they are involved in media work. Detecting a jihadi online and locating him in physical space is relatively straight forward. The real challenge is threat assessment.

“Radical Islamist Group Tries to Branch Out”
IPT News
July 6, 2011
SNIPPET: “One of America’s most radical homegrown Islamist groups has opened two new centers focused on the “Zionist American” threat, a thinly-veiled reference to the group’s anti-Semitic and anti-American message. Under the leadership of extremist Abdul Alim Musa, the Sabiqun organization has tried to blur the line between attacking Jews and criticizing Israel, as well as striking out against America.
“For 30 years, Masjid Al-Islam [Sabiqun’s mosque] has been carrying on a direct, face-to-face struggle against the monolithic Zionist American regime,” Abdul Alim Musa said in an “Urgent Appeal” to support the new “Islamic Institute of Counter Zionist American Psychological Warfare (IICZAPW).”
“We are an anti-Zionist American psycho-guerrilla warfare movement, the appeal said. “We use all available tools found in our environment in exposing the anti-Islamic, anti-human policies of this Zionist American system.”
Other flyers explain that the IICZAPW’s primary goal is “to counter the concerted efforts of the enemies of Islam to sustain a false characterization of Islam and Muslims as a dangerous threat to global stability and tranquility.” That mission has already led Sabiqun to deny the involvement of Islamist terrorists in 9/11 and to characterize the acts of Hamas and Hizballah as a justified war on Jews. The Institute is the group’s primary project to keep its movement going, after the loss of several branches in California.
As part of its ideology, Sabiqun and the IICZAPW are also actively preparing for the death of the United States. Sabiqun, which currently runs two active mosques in D.C. and Oakland, espouses a self-reliant and anti-assimilation ideology that appeals to its community of poor African-American converts.”

Hizb ut-Tahrir: Islam Has Replaced Communism as Top U.S. Enemy
IPT News
July 11, 2011
SNIPPET: A radical Islamist group which claims a presence in nearly 50 countries is so confident it can help establish a global Muslim government or caliphate that it distributed a draft constitution during a recent conference outside of Chicago.
It calls for the death penalty for apostates and for creating a government department dedicated to jihad.
The latest Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) gathering drew more than 300 people to a DoubleTree Hotel ballroom June 26.
HT is an international movement to establish a global Islamic state, or caliphate (Khilafah). Although it is officially committed to nonviolence, HT preaches a virulent brand of hatred for the United States, and for Western democracy in general. Its alumni include such violent Islamists as Khaiid Sheikh Mohammad, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, and the late Iraqi jihadist Abu Musab Zarqawi. Hizb ut-Tahrir has been described as a conveyor belt of terror.
