M = 3*(3*N+3);

M = 9*N + 9 = 10*N + 9 -N

given N a member of {1, 2, 3, ... 9}

Sum (Digits of M) = N + 9 - N = 9

Remarkable.

Very clever - this conundrum has been around for years and the answer is always 9 - don’t know how or why.

That is brilliant;)

Yes. It’s been around for years. I’m just old and forget things like how funny an old joke is until I re-hear it. Lay it out in an excel spreadsheet and you’ll see the pattern. 9-times table from 2nd grade if you went to Cathloic School, if you went to public school 10th grade.

Too old for old math - although I do try to keep up my skills in the grocery store.

40 years ago - one could assign $1 for each purchase. Today you have to assign $7. Try it. I’m usually within 50 cents on the total bill. (law of averages)

Or they realized the nonsense of the game before hand since number 9 does not exist......

My normal wake up time is Oh-dark-Five-Hundred hours, so I'm in bed by ten most nights. My wife woke me up to tell me that Fox News Boston had reported that “they” had killed Osama. I wearily got up to catch it, and they were showing the White House briefing room with an empty podium, and said that President Obama would have a statement at 10:30. The Fox News Network kept up some pointless banter for nearly an hour, waiting for the “announcement”. I found it infuriating. It was completely self-centered, lacking in grace notes, without gratitude, verbose, vacuous and otherwise Obamaesque.

There is a word, “Lincolnesque”, meaning, “eloquent and moving in a plain spoken and unornamented manner”. [e.g., “I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming.”]

There is a word, “Clintonesque”, meaning “infuriatingly evasive, deceptive, obfuscating, oblique, and tortured; obnoxiously lawyerly”. E.g., “It depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.”

There needs to be a word, “Obamaesque”, meaning “solipolistically self-promoting, in a vacuous, meandering and verbose manner; appealing to the semiliterate through use of person references and vainglorious rhetoric.”

On Movies.com, Blazing Saddles is number one among people who are bad at math. BTW, I was on a radio talk show with Cleavon Little before he was (really, really) famous.

Excuse me, I went to Catholic school and we were most certainly done with the “times tables” through 12 x 12 by sixth grade. We were doing solid geometry in the 10th grade.

So you include 3 as a multiple twice guaranteeing that the answer will be a muliple of 9 and therefore the digits add to 9. In 3rd grade that would have been cool

I’m sorry, but if I have to use math to figure out which movie I like, I can do it with just addition. Cost of tickets + cost of popcorn + cost of pop = Holy cow! Let’s watch tv. Pay per view movie + cost of therapy to recover from violence in the movie + sound-cancelling headphones for wife because I scream at how bad the movies are = Holy cow! Let’s read a book. Cost of book + cost of incarceration for insane writer paid for by my taxes + bill from opthamologist for washing out my eyes to try and get rid of the utterly evil words in the book = Holy cow! I’ll watch the grass grow.
