In my opinion this site is much less active than it was in the early days.

During the Clinton era, this site was a major thorn in the Clinton's butt. We were taking out full page ads during the early days of impeachment. We did stuff to combat what we were seeing. In hindsight the Clinton's weren't that bad, in comparison.

Should we be doing more?

Bill, we have you surrounded!!!
Put down the cigar, step away from the intern
and come out with your pants up.

That was a Doctor Raoul quote if I remember right. My most memorable/colorful FReeper heroes from those days were the legendary Kristen (of course), Mr. Confetti Man, Dr. Raoul and Clinton's a liar. I attended the March for Justice and the House Manager's Rally back then. Interesting events, and got to meet JimRob at the Rally. Just did a search, and CSpan still has their March For Justice video posted on their website.

People change over the years. Lord knows I have.

Back during the Clinton timeframe, I was more of along the lines of the kind of Republican that George Bush was. And after experiencing the first four years of Bush, I discovered that all I really want is for the government to leave me the *eff* alone.

Sadly, I had to wait until 2008 before there was enough on the right that thought the same way. And in 2010, I finally saw some hope in the TEA party movement.

if you say something controversial, instead of respectful intelligent debate discussing the merits of the issue, you get personally attacked and crucified, not by just liberals, but so called conservatives also.

You've never been crucified by a liberal on Free Republic. Ever. There's only us conservatives here.

And, what constitutes "controversial" on a conservative forum? Seems to me, that would necessarily be some point of view that the majority of professed conservatives vehemently disagree with.

If you're being attacked so much that you have to voice a beef about it, I'd say that you're probably off the reservation, and that the community is letting you know that.

Yes. I know it ways 98, but it says NOVEMBER 98. I was here before then. 98 is my date, but I thought that I had joined before Novemeber. Perhaps I was just lurking and not registered. I found this place from the Whitewater list on Drudge.

Hey, Fiddlstix, haven’t seen you in a long time! Good to see you posting. You add so much to this site.

I remember how you (you specfically) could always provide a song here (midi file) but I don’t think you can do that any more (have music play when you first open a link). I hope you are doing well, and I agree with everything you say about FR.

The only complaint I have most of the time is the personal attacks when people disagree.

I figured out a long time ago that a lot of what we write here stays in cyberspace forever. Just google your screen name, and it is scary when you see your own words from 5 years ago appear on the screen! You shake your head and wonder why in the world you ever said THAT?

So, ever after, I am very careful about what I write -- even to spelling and punctuation. Sometimes my keyboard gets away from me, but usually my posts are spelled and punctuated correctly. And I don't make personal attacks on other posters, or use crude language. That's a good rule for every day conduct in any situation.

Now, if you find any errors in my posts, I apologize. I'm typing on a laptop that is new to me, and it doesn't always cooperate. LOL!

There is not a thing conservative about the RNC.

The RNC is more conservatives than the dems and unless and until we have runoff elections everywhere, those are the only two choices. I voted for Ross Perot twice, saw the results, and will never do anything like that again until we have runoff elections.

Hi O.L.

Pretty funny that they could go through 24,000 pages of emails and not come up with ONE "Gotcha!" They must have read thousands of adoring emails from Palin fans... LMAO!!!

I'm off to church, see you around noon (central time) if you're here.

"...not sure that is possible before the financial chickens come home to roost. The verdict is still out on that..."

Rest easy, Ancient One. "The Undefeated" will give the masses hope. The predominantly conservative (in their hearts) electorate will give us Palin. Sarah Palin will give us back a Free, Sovereign and Constitutionally sound America. And a strong America will give us back our wealth, pride and dignity. Sarah and we, together, will restore The American Dream.

In your lifetime, no less. She's a force of nature. Once she gets moving, shet happens fast.

"I screwed up so often, that I wouldn’t return for days at a time...lol."

Due to Jimmy Thompson's remarkably forgiving nature (I'm convinced he sees all here on FR...), I've had no fewer than a dozen new FReep logons since 1997-98 after many bannings for knock-down, drag-out brawls here on FR.

I think I remind him of a younger him. It's possible that's my ego spouting. It still does that alot...

And, its interesting in 2011 as to what constitutes a “personal attack” or being “personally attacked”. Seems to me that some folks are very touchy about their opinions and if that opinion is totally and cleverly eviscerated by commentary, somehow they decide thats personal. Of course, it isn’t. And, we have an entire generation and a half it seems of men who can’t handle having a voice raised in their presence or they are offended and take it personally.

>>It will heat up again.

That’s what I am afraid of.

It works now. When the server infrastructure gets loaded at busy times, the site bogs down horribly and even crashes. This is probably part of the reason there is less activity here. People give up and go elsewhere.

It does get ugly, particularly lately.

What is getting under my skin lately is the 'RINO police.' Everyone is a RINO: DeMint, West, Bachmann... offer a name and someone throws the RINO card.

Want to talk 2012 candidates? For some it's Sarah Palin even if she's not running. Discuss anyone else and they'll go scored-earth: you must be a RINO and your candidate is a stalking-horse for Romney, be warned or we'll call for a zot. I exaggerate, perhaps, but not by much.

Some believe the nomination is hers, candidate or not, and no one else can have it. That stuff doesn't do Palin any good if she ever does run. It drives people away to see that cultish craziness. That's different than passion.

It doesn't do FR any good, either, because there really are actual candidates in this race and we need to discuss their pros and cons. We need the best alternative to Romney running.

I've been saying lately, if people wait around for Palin, and she does not run, the conservative alternatives will have lost valuable time needed to build a strong campaign and raise funds against to fight Romney. Primaries and caucuses start in January, people will be busy worried about home heating oil and the holidays by October. These next 3-4 months are crucial to the nomination.

How many remember the Second Amendment Sisters(SAS), a group of women that opposed the Million Mom March (MMM) in 2000. SAS firmed right here on FR. You can see a CNN video of their May 2000 march on D.C. at this Link.

There were SAS demonstrations opposing MMM all across the Country. One of the more successful ones was in Tampa, FL. The MMMs were crossing the Gandy Bridge over Tampa Bay. When they topped the high center span, they saw the Sisters had occupied their rally facility on the west end of the bridge. It got physical.

Can we stir up that kind of activism again?

Prayer has replaced action.

Rather than act, prayers go up, there is mental action and a self pat on the back for doing something constructive. Real activity beyond arms length or requiring a contribution of talent or money to the FReep de jour is thus not required.

Personal activity and responsibility is thus abrogated.

.......This is a discussion forum.....

Actually in the early years it was an activist forum where there was discussion and action. The forum allowed folks from across the country to decide on a project and then develop it and then raise some money and then go forward with implementation...... right here, right before your eyes in breathtaking short time.

There is none of that now. Complacency and apathy rule
