Matching Jack

for those who have tasted the garlic

Just coming saw it at the Cleveland film festival. Story of Australian boy and the family challenges in finding a bone marrow match. Does a lot to explain the challenges and insanity of having a child with a blood disease

Agree 100% with Babettes Feast and the Hired Hand. Somebody could start a movie network with this thread!

Agreed...Galaxy Quest is one of our favorites!

“I have one job on this lousy ship. It’s stupid, but I’m gonna do it, ok?!”

“Let’s get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!”

etc.

Also love The Replacements.

The Ipcress File with a young Michael Caine. Still not out on DVD. It was followed by Funeral in Berlin with Caine again as reluctant agent Harry Lime.

If I were President, it would be required that everyone would have to watch “The Lives of Others”...but on second thought, that would kind of defeat my purpose, wouldn’t it?

“Babette’s Feast” 1987 foreign film winner.

Good choice.

The Quiet Earth—From New Zealand about a man who wakes up to find out he’s (not quite) the last person left alive on Earth. An ending that forces you to think.

The Hot Rock—A funny 1972 caper flick with Robert Redford and George Segal. “Afghanistan bananastand.”

The Anderson Tapes—A 1971 caper flick with Sean Connery and Dyan Cannon (both gorgeous) and an early (already playing the psycho) Christopher Walken. Lots of action but also a good commentary on how—even 40 years ago—the surveillance society keeps track of our every move.

Lost in America—Albert Brooks and Julie Hagerty set off across the country: It’s like Easy Rider in a Winnebago! Watch out when they get to Las Vegas. “As the boldest experiment in advertising history, you give us our money back.”

One of the bleakest movies I've ever seen is:

Salaam Bombay!

Its a powerful, griping and devestating tale of street-children, hookers, pimps and heroin dealers in Bombay.

Its ALL subtitles, but the story is riveting, as well as heartwrenching and heartbreaking upon reflection; the despair and hopelessness of these people is beyong comprehension.

Near the end is the proverbial John 3:16 message, in the background, that you'll miss if you're not paying attention. Its there for all about 10 seconds; its plausibly the only hope any of the characters have in an entire bleak lifetime of destitute existance.

Almost forgot two creepies, a genre of which I am not particularly a fan. But “The Others” (ie. Turn of the Screw) and “”Don’t Look Now” (and if you do, you will never want to go to Venice) put the modern day slasher pics (masquerading as scary movies) to shame.

Great catch on Cotton Comes To Harlem, buccaneer!

Always like the team-up of Raymond St. Jacques and the always under-rated, Godfrey Cambridge. Another great Cambridge film is The President's Analysts with James Coburn. Though his satiric Watermelon Man is something of an acquired taste.

Fallen 1998 Denzel Washington, John Goodman, and Donald Sutherland.

From IMDB
“Homicide detective John Hobbes witnesses the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese. Soon after the execution the killings start again, and they are very similar to Reese's style.”

Det. Hobbes discovers there are things better left alone and unseen, but once discovered defy logic and belief.

Quote: “Can you imagine what it feels like to be alive for thousands of years, and then realize you're actually going to die, ‘cause some self-righteous cop decided that he was going to save the f*&%$#g world?

Lost in America -highly recommended on several levels. “I am going back to New York and eat some s..t.” Who has not been there? And I don’t think school crossing guard jobs pay any more than they did then.

My favorite is called “Larry Sinclair’s Ride.”

Ewww. That is something I really don't want to see. I can already picture the Senator Barry with his head leaning back and that smile on his face. Double ew.
