I was just watching the original "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Yes, he deserved his Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburn but opposite him was someone who played his part horribly. I am talking about Glenn Campbell as the Texas Ranger. Sheesh! Talk about stilted delivery. Really bad. Another example of bad acting was also in a John Wayne movie---"The Alamo." It was Frankie Avalon as Smitty who was supposed to be a young Tennessee frontiersman. I like Frankie Avalon in the beach flicks but, let's face it, he was waaay too urban to be believable in the role of Smitty. Whenever I see "The Alamo," it is impossible to forget that this is just a movie because of Frankie Avalon's completely unconvincing acting.
There are many other major movies with examples of really horrible acting. I cited a couple of such examples, so please list yours.
James Cagney in “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. What was that singing and dancing bit about?
She was adequate in “Derailed.”
Tobey Maguire in “Spiderman.”
What a ZERO!!! How do you make Spiderman BORING?
Wesley Snipes in ‘Snakes on a Plane’. It was meant to be a serious action drama....I laughed through the whole movie.
Richard Gere as “King David”. So bad, it was funny.
Disagree. Lesley Ann Warren was nominated for an Oscar for “Victor/Victoria,” and she should have won. HI. LAR. I. OUS.
Yes. The overly urban Frankie Avalon as Smitty in "The Alamo" was so misplaced that it was entertaining in a comedic way. Of course, it was still very painful to watch.
I remember when it first came out, I was watching it and thinking, "wow, you are in CA, you are looking for a young male actor, blonde, to play this pivotal role and this is the best you could come up with?
Kim Darby in True Grit was the worst
As much as I love him, Freddie Couples playing himself in Tin Cup was the worst. Add in his playing partner that day, too. Corey Pavin, was it?
Kevin Costner in anything but Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was the worst.
Cagney had been a dancer in vaudeville before he became a movie star.
Gold Medal - Brooke Shields in "Blue Lagoon."
Ben Affleck in everything he's been in.
Sondra Locke in The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet, Bronco Billy, Any Which Way You Can, Sudden Impact. UGH
That’s a good one.it was so bad I can still remember
My short list:
-Rosie O’Donnell as Betty Rubble in one of the Flintstones movies. Every guy (whether they will admit it or not) who ever watched the cartoon had a childhood fantasy of what a real-life Betty would look like. I guarantee you none of them ever thought of Rosie O’Donnell.
-Sharon Stone in the remake of Gloria. Gena Rowlands you ain’t, baby.
-Brad Pitt as Achilles in Troy.
-William Shatner as Alexander the Great (TV pilot). A pre-Trek Shatner and his loyal sidekick (a pre-Batman Adam West) fight off the Persians.
-And, last but not least: Jack Palance in CHE! as...wait for it..Fidel Castro.
Frances Ethel Gumm in anything!
Alright, now you’re just being annoying.
Elizabeth Taylor as “Cleopatra”.
Denise Richards as a scientist in The World is not Enough.
Brad Pitt was just AWFUL in Troy.
Brad Pitt had the WORST German accent in “7 Years in Tibet.”
I think it had something to do with the title song, and the lyrics "I'm singin', and dancin' in the rain."
Kevin Costner in Water World.
Scott Baio in Zapped
Lou Diamond Phillips in Young Guns
Michael Keaton in Batman. Arnold as Mr. freeze in Batman. Uma Thurman in Batman. Chris O’Donnel in Batman.
Andrew McCarthy in Mannequn
That’s a start.
“Gold Medal- Sean Connery in Zardoz”
Unfair!
Zardoz was good... in a Barbarellaish sort of way.
I always thought William Shatner wasn’t a very good actor, that whole Star Trek crew was lucky to get their parts and even luckier to have the fan base grow. Luckily for us, Galaxy Quest came out as proper satire.
Angelina Jolie in Alexander. AWFUL!!! Though I am not a fan of her or her acting.
Jane Fonda in Barbarella, Streisand in Yentl, Tom Hanks in Joe vs the Volcano, Meg Tilly in anything, Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman, Tom Cruise in TAPS.
Also in Troy it looked like they had a wax figure substitute for Peter O'Toole as the king.
Wait, this reminded me of what I consider to be the most awful scene played by two actors: Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler with an animal cracker in Armageddon. Talk about GAG! "Do you think there are two other people doing this?" I hope that there are not two other people who are this lame in the UNIVERSE!
Brad Pitt in every movie he’s been in...
Tom Cruise in Magnolia
That whiny douchebag is supposed to be Darth Vader? Sure! Portman is almost as bad.
Yes, but lines like, ...”To crush your enemies, see them driven before you ... and to hear the lamentation of their women!”,..are somewhat memorable.
He can’t do an accent, period. Seven Years and Troy are perfect examples.
I really liked Sleepers.
It beats me why anyone would want to sing and dance in the rain.
I missed the message. Social Justice?
Actually that was one of my favorite Pacino roles. I loved the scene where he acted like an attorney for the defense at that exclusive boys school.
His teeth scared me.
that's not easy
Keanu Reeves as the alien, Klaatu. An alien who is all but emotionless and speaks in a monotone isnt that the role Mr. Reeves was born to play? Based on previous performances, you might think so, and yet he still seems shallow and unconvincing.
***Who says movie reviewers can’t write? Basically he says that Keanu Reeves looks shallow and unconvincing when he’s playing an emotionless monotonic character. A sock puppet would do a better job acting. Now... that’s good writing. I disagree with the reviewer, but it’s still excellent writing.
Agree. Ep 1-3 were terrible, and the acting pathetic.
But then again, he could have been acting like a bad actor, which would make him a really good actor.
It was a little hard to get past his drinking of his own recycled urine at the beginning.
George Strait was awful in Pure Country
