I upgraded both of my Macs to Lion this afternoon.
Time to install and reboot (each): 40 minutes
After reboot:
Took about 30 minutes to upgrade my mail. Could do nothing while that happened.
Once the mail was processed, the system fully started.
Spotlight began reindexing in the background and it took a lot of CPU. Everything was running slow. Mail seemed to be the target of the Spotlight reindex.
Some notables:
Launch pad is great for an old man like me. Looking at those itty bitty icons in the application list was getting harder.
The new scrolling took a minute to get used to. You move your finger up the mouse to get it to scroll down. I adapted quickly.
Spell checking in Safari now. Great for FR posting!
I paid to upgrade my Mac Tower. The upgrade on my MBP was a freebie. I hadn't expected that.
Okay. So now I am off to explore what else is new.
You need 2 GB of RAM, sounds like you have 4GB.
You will need 7 GB of Hard Drive disk space - I would hope you have a lot more than that. Chances are your hard drive came with 300 GB or more.
I don’t understand what you are saying when you say “Open a window in Finder?” What window?
I’m going to have to pick up a family pack.. it’s a lot cheaper..
Actually, the $29 download is the "family pack". Like anything else bought on the app store, you can use the Lion OS upgrade on multiple computers with a single purchase.
MacWorld recommends backing up the download file before installing, however, as the installation will wipe away the download file, and you don't want to have to pull the whole download off the web again for each machine.
You know. I am really going to be mad; if I have to take this computer in for more space when I specially asked about upgrades and they said fine. Not good business practice being dishonest to customer.
Make sure to run system update to get the new iTunes, and anything else that may have an update available that’s Lion specific - I got one for iWork11 as well as iTunes.
And yeah, the scrolling is going to take some getting used to... I’m very accustomed to my Logitech mouse with a scroll wheel. It’s bas-ackwards now :)
The 4 GB is your RAM, not your disk space. Lion only requires 2 GB of RAM, so you're good there.
The 7 GB recommendation is for free hard drive space -- odds are you have that much available unless you've filled the whole hard drive. Open up Finder and do a "Get Info" on your hard drive under "Devices" -- that will tell you how much hard drive space you have available.

Do you have (do you need) multitouch trackpad input devices?
No. It’s not a requirement, but I do use the Magic Mouse. I like it.
LOL Maybe I have an IMac from Mars. There is no Get Info on Devices of Finder.

Thanks. Lol Never claimed to know anything important about computers. I bought to stop an incredibly large computer continual repair bill for viruses on a PC. It’s paid off there.
I’m in the process of downloading as I type. That’s the part that takes the longest. Anyway, take the 7GB free diskspace as gospel. You’ll need the space for working with the file. In fact, if you cAn, I’d free up a whole lot more space. Lion will try and create a recovery partition on the HD as well.
So don’t go out trying to upgrade without a full backup, and as I mentioned, free up as much space as you can.
There are 2 primary types of memory (that the non-engineer, non-programmer, non-chip designer) really cares about.
RAM and the size of your hard drive. Many Macs come with at least 2 GB, and many come with much more. You ONLY need 2 GB; you have 7 GB.
Hard Drive - I don’t know how big a hard drive you bought with your Mac. Many Macs came with a 300 GB drive; is your drive 97% full? If not, then you have more than 7 GB free - and you should be fine.
If you pull up the info panel on your hard drive; you will know the hard drive capacity, how much space you are using, and the all-important ‘Free space available’.
If you have more than 7 GB of free space available - you are golden, good to go.
If you have less than 20 GB of free space, I personally urge you to invest in a second hard drive and move some stuff over. Hard drives never run at peak performance when they are over 80% full. I cannot speak to the performance/capacity ratio on the new SSD (solid-state disks) that are now the latest screaming storage media. I simply don’t have any experience with them, yet.
This lil ol granny just finished the download with no problems at all.
I noticed the change in direction for the mouse scroll, so went to preferences and looked for a check box. Sure enough, you can uncheck it, and the mouse will scroll just like it used to - for those too lazy to make the change.
Everything seems to be working fine. Now I have to get all my apps organized the way I like them on the Launchpad.
Seems very sweet to me, and I love the new calendar app!
You have 484.69 GB available on your hard drive for the installation. Go for it!
OS X Lion with various server functionality added. Most operating systems these days are the same between servers and clients, the main difference being the features and some settings tweaks, and for Windows the unlocking of various artificial limitations (such as maximum processor and memory usage).
