The life expectancy for NFL players is grim.

The life expectancy for NFL players is grim.

It's not just NFL players, it's also large men in general. There something about being at or near 300 lb that puts a lot of strain on the body. I'm not medically qualified to make an exact explanation but I'm willing to bet that this has a lot to do with it.

I remember seeing him in person many years ago, and thinking, wow, is that guy big, not fat at all, just big.

I grew up with the Colts when they were in Baltimore. Bubba was a special player. Not because of his weigh so much, it was his height. Statistics count sacks, they don’t count batted down passes as far as I know.

Certianly true. I don’t believe carrying that much weight is good for the circulatory system.

But I also think that repeated blows to the head are related to the early demise of football players.

Loved the Bubba - I was a Colts fan, too. A great player, and he just was a big old nice bear of a man. RIP to a class act.

One late evening back in 1966 another freshman buddy and I were stumblimg drunkenly down the sidewalk along the Red Cedar River on the Michigan State Campus making quite a ruckus, singing and hollering. Suddenly out of the shadows a monster appeared with a girl on his arms -— Bubba Smith.

“You fellas hold it down, you’re bothering my girl!”, said he.

Said I, well, nothing. I don’t think I let a peep escape my mouth the rest of the night.

Years ago I used to drive Limos in Dallas. I picked Mr. Smith up at DFW Airport one night and as we got to the car several people walked up for autographs. While he was signing and talking to people I put his luggage in the trunk. Two things happened at the same time, someone tried to open the car door and Mr. Smith decided to get something out of his suitcase. I only saw the guy reaching for the door and unfortunately for Mr. Smith I didn't see him stick his head in the trunk so in my hurry to stop the guy from opening the door I slammed down the trunk lid.

I'm not sure who of the two of us were more surprised but I do know which of the two of us saw spots for the next 10 minutes.

I was horrified that I had just hit my client in the head with the trunk lid but without missing a beat he smiled at me and and said, "damn, you Cowboy fans sure do hold a grudge!".

Johnny has died. As far as I know, Brooks has cancer. God, I wish I were young again. Life was simple back then.

Lots of NFL players (not Bubba Smith AFAIK) end up with ALS, and its believed the blows to the head are a major contributing factor.

I know how you feel. I met both Johnny and Brooks - 2 of the nicest guys ever. They loved people and their fans, they came up the hard way and appreciated everything they had.

Gentlemen in every way, we probably will not see the likes of them again. So sad...

So right. I have an autograph ball for the 1966 World Series signed by Brooks. No money could buy it. When I die, I’ll probably donate it to the Baltimore Sports museum.
