Where to Stay and See in San Diego

Posted on 08/07/2011 6:08:47 AM PDT by Mean Daddy

My wife and I are planning to go to San Diego at the end of September, beginning of October. Since we've never have been there, looking for suggestions on where to stay.

Don't need a $300 a night hotel, but don't want to end up with one where the guy next door is making a batch of meth either.

Also, would appreciate any suggestions on what to see/do while we are there.

Thank you.

about 10 years ago I stayed at I think was a Holiday Inn... it was a round building... not far from the light rail train station and within walking distnace to the Little Italy district and the water (where big boats/ships dock).

I could easily get to highways too... hotel was near an exit/enterance ramp.

If you’re flying in there, make sure you have a window seat. Landing in SD is pretty cool.

Go to the zoo. I miss that zoo so much. It is amazing, and really not too pricey. If you have access to a car, take a day trip to Temecula and tour the wineries. Coronado and La Jolla are close and both gorgeous in their own rights, but La Jolla does have seal beach, which is fun. Old town is a nice walking afternoon, and of course, there is the USMC Recruit Depot. Hit the parade deck, and you could see them practicing drills. They are more lenient with the civilian access due to all the families that come through. I can’t help with a place to stay, as we either stay on the Depot or at 32nd Street in the Navy Hotel. Oh!!! Speaking of Navy, ypyou can tour some ships and do some shopping in the Seaport Village area. Enjoy. Now I miss San Diego LOL.

Do your research and see if you want to stay in the marina area etc. Then use hotels.com for your room.

Get a motel somewhere off of Orange Ave. on Coronado Island. They can be had for a decent price and you’ll be staying in a safe, beautiful part of San Diego surrounded by nice restaurants and stores and where the beach is just a short walk away. From here, it’s just a drive over the bridge to anywhere you’d like to visit.

And if you like sailing, rent a boat and sail the bay. Beautiful!

The Catamaran resort and spa on Mission Bay is quite nice and affordable. Not too hard to find parking on nearby streets.

The best value hotel is by far the Town & Country Resort on hotel circle! Great amenities and close to Old Town, Sea World and within walking distance of the Fashion Valley mall. SD has a motor trolley system that takes you to all the tourist spots from all the hotels so for a few bucks you can go anywhere! It’s a great city! Have fun!

We just stayed there a couple weeks ago. There is a little italy section ( I know seems funny but its nice) we stayed at Porta Vista hotel http://www.portovistasd.com/ couple blocks from the harbor. Great area, close to Balboa park (great museums recommend Space science/ flight museum) zoo. You can walk to this great and cheap restaurant around the corner called Philipes. OH MY GOSH order the combo lasagna and pasta, it is HUGE and plenty for 2 people to eat. Cost? $8.50

If you can bring your bikes do it. You can explore the Harbor, tour the midway air craft carrier and ride along the water front. But I highly recommend, taking the ferry to Coronado Island, (really good BBQ place right by the dock) ride over to Hotel Del Coronado, then ride the silver strand beach path. Stop anywhere and enjoy the beach, (warning you are really far south so you will get sun burned faster)
Rent some kayaks, paddle the bay.
They also have a red car trolley system in down town that can take you to many places for one price for the day.
One of those cities that you say, Geez why havent I spent a weekend here before???? Hope it helps

I’d stay in the Mission Bay area about two miles north of the airport. It’s a beautiful scenic area, on the water, near Sea World and Old Town: Old Town being the original spanish mission area ... colorful, with good Mexican restaurants. Also worth visiting, in the downtown harbor area, is Anthony’s Seafood Restaurant and the USS Midway aircraft carrier which is now a “museum.”

Try the Best Western Hacienda. It’s smack in the middle of Old Town, it has a great restaurant, and it’s really pretty neat perched on the edge of a big hill. Give em a call. Its where we stay when going to SD. haciendahotel-oldtown.com. No, i dont have any affiliation.... :-)

The Maritime Museum is nice, too. You can get on the ship that was in “Master and Commander”, and a couple of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. It’s next to the U.S.S. Midway.

Now I miss San Diego LOL.

Sigh... Same here.

My wife and I had a little apartment on Coronado Island while I was on shore duty in the navy. Not only was the instructor billet I was filling some of the easiest, most relaxed work I had ever done in my life but living on Coronado for three years was just paradise. San Diego is just beautiful. And the strong military presence helps it avoid some of the nutty liberalism that has infected other major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Sadly though, it's still part of California.

Check San Diego Zoo website. I believe that the first week of Oct. is their birthday. Your can get in for free.

Also check out Balboa Park. Lots of museums there.

Balboa monument, it is a light house, you can see San Diego Bay and North Island Naval Base from there.

There is alot see and do in San Diego. I know, I live about 10 mintues from San Diego. It is call Chula Vista.
