Also today, Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) is in South Carolina to speak at the RedState conservative blogger convention in Charleston. Gov. Perry is widely expected to declare his candidacy for the GOP presidential nomination. Also participating in the event are South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. Jim DeMint.

FoxNews said he updated his website, explaining why he is running, but I can’t find the website. I tried some variations, but none of those was the real one.

Donning flame suit since so many out of staters seem to love him just because he's a Texan, runs on the GOP ticket and has good hair (look where cleans up good and is articulate got us last time). Ok, you've read about right out of the chute his his pet project was Texas’ version of the DREAM act for illegals being able to pay in-state college tuition (US citizens from other states get the jacked up out-of-state tuition rate), the Gardasil fiasco (which is still alive and well being handed out by public school nurses on the taxpayers’ dime and check out his two Chief of Staffs), the Texas Corridor, the new Spanish run new toll road, the taxpayers paying for his personal expenses, not showing enough leadership to keep the RATS in the state to hold redistricting meetings (they ran away twice - NM and OK) which wasted tax $$$, and no leadership in getting the legislature to finish the session so had to call a second session and still not enough bothered showing up for even a quorum so more tax $$$ wasted, his never ending pandering to illegals (don't believe his very recent anti-sancturary city blathering because of long love affair with them and it's one thing to say you're going to withhold $ and actually follow through), La Raza, the Top 10% (Texas hs graduates get automatic acceptance at an in-state public college if they are in the top 10% of their class - except oodles of $$$ were wasted making UT the except two years ago bumping it down to Top 8% when it was UT’s fault we even have the ruling), etc.

This last election, conservatives weren't happy with the slate. It finally came down to Perry or Kay Bailey Hutchinson (barf) so conservatives came out to vote AGAINST KBH rather than FOR Perry. An Austin news station (www.kxan.com) ran a poll yesterday asking if you'd vote for Perry. It was running steady at 2/3rds would vote against him until later in the day when it got hit with Perry supporters so dropped 58% against him. That should tell you something.

What the voters are seeing is that Texas’ economy is in fairly good shape compared to other states. However, that has nothing to do with Perry. He simply doesn't have that sort of power. The thanks goes to our legislature and to out of state companies realizing that land and labor are cheaper than on either coasts.

That said, unlike so many others, I doubt there will be any personal scandals the msm will be able to dig up. He keeps his private life private. There's no brother Billy or Roger to bring embarrassment and no hunting accidents or mad rabbits (that I know of). Until he gets one of his wacky liberal ideas, he's mostly so low key (partly due to our government set up making him mostly a paper signer) that you'd almost forget we had a governor.

The bottom line with Perry is that he talks a good line depending on his audience (pandering again). He's conservative right before elections (i.e. sanctuary city bill) but after the election slides quickly back into liberal mode. Sure, he looks safe but after the swearing in he'd be first in line at the kool-aid stand. IOW, he's a typical RINO.

Thanks for taking the time to provide some cautionary insights into his record. Definitely a few reasons to be concerned about the authenticity (or lack thereof) of his commitment to conservative principles. I will keep these issues in mind as the primaries unfold.

As far as the Austin area poll is concerned, isn’t that a liberal area? I would expect that kind of result based on what I’ve heard about Austin (i.e., college town, seat of government, arts and entertainment, etc.).

college town - UT definitely liberal but thankfully most of the students usually don't vote.

seat of government - Hey, Texas is conservative! There are exceptions, like Sheila (shudder!), but we don't like talking about them. It's not or any real consequence since the legislature only meets every other year for 140 days so they live elsewhere

arts - more craftsy but not a major fine arts center, that would be Dallas

entertainment - not so much except during SXSW (music) and in recent years movies have come to film at a few buildings with interesting architecture or the landscape but they don't vote.

The actual city of Austin is liberal - UT, Hippy Hollow (nude beach, ewww!), the tree huggers, the liberal yankees and Californians who moved in with the tech and other companies who want to change Texas into what they moved away from, the Keepin' Austin Weird crowd (made up of the previous groups), etc. The city is also what throws it's county, Travis, into the blue on election maps. However, the 3 main Austin tv stations broadcast far out to many of the surrounding counties which are definitely conservative. You see, we don't have many big cities in this area and smaller towns don't have tv stations or large newspapers or shopping. Even Waco, imo, isn't quite to "big" city status, yet. Look at a map - there's the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex up north, there's Houston on the gulf coast, there's El Paso in the far west, there's San Antonio in the southern area, so not counting the panhandle or East Texas, Austin has to cover Central Texas which is everything in between. In towns outside Austin, you're likely to have one grocery store and a Dollar General (which is on a boon and building a lot of new stores this year). It's not unusual to drive an hour to the nearest Walmart - yeah, I know, don't laugh. So, if you want something more than Walmart offers, then you wait to plan for an entire day of errands and drive into Austin.

Thanks for the informative “geopolitical” info on Texas. I’ve been there a few times and always enjoyed it along with the friendliness of Texans, but never stayed long enough to get a feel for what it’s really like. And, as I said, I know very little about Rick Perry, but in general I like to think through all the candidates’ strenghts and weaknesses. We all have ‘em!

That said, we want to make sure we go with the one that has the best chance of removing the usurper and stop his dismantling of this country. Unfortunately, that is job #1 and is more important at this point in history than finding the perfect candidate who might not be able to win. We simply can’t stand four more years of Obama. The good news is that he’s weakening by the day and if we get behind a ‘good’ candidate we can be back on a better path and a better destiny for future generations of Americans.
