Without details of this study, there is no way to make heads or tails out of it. As Yaelle noted, the diet was probably confounded with grains or some other sugar. Of course, that would generate biased results. What kind of fats were used? I guarantee you, the diet contained an unhealthy amount of N-6 variety of fat. Being one of the neolithic agents of disease, a whacked-out ratio of N-6 to N-3 has been identified as one of the factors in Type 2 diabetes. N-6=Bad Sugar=Bad Grains (wheat/glutin)=bad There is absolutely no iron-clad proof that saturated fats and medium-chain fats (butter, ghee, coconut oil, lard, etc.) play any kind of a bad-boy role in the causation of modern diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Here’s an interesting factoid... in 1985, there were approx. 30 million diabetics in the world. Currently, that number is rapidly approaching a half billion!

Yes, I added a daily dose of Salmon oil (1000iu vit C & D too) but that was after I started the low carb diet. I figured Id cover all the bases.
I did the Salmon oil for a while also, until a friend recommended that I change over to Krill oil. He said that the Salmon oil *can* have high levels of pollutants, while the Krill oil is pretty much clean. Don't know if this is true or not, but the Krill seems to work just as good for me (carpel tunnel symptoms).

Salmon and krill are both open ocean creatures, I’d think they have the same level of pollutants.
Grass fed meats have omega 3 and is good too.

What I was told is that the pollutants accumulate in Salmon since it is near the top of the food chain, and that they're less in Krill since they are near the bottom. I don't know if this is true, or not, but it does make sense.

I’m still the weight I was in high school and maintained that throughout my years.....always asked if I excersize or what diet I use.
Basically I eat everything I want....and NEVER eat fat-free anything. Butter is butter....not margerine....milk is whole milk not watered down version....not big on casseroles but do eat some. Mostly meat and potatoes, fish and chicken. I eat what I like.
Aside from Christmas and Holidays or special occassions.... I never over eat.....and so moderation is still the key IMO.
I think many people are “emotional” eaters....they eat when they’re happy, sad, angry, whatever....and generally snacks and junk food...and too much of it. I eat because it’s necessary....like filling the gas tank.

The problem is obesity from too many calories Eating far more than should IMO....It's not called "Comfort food" for nothing. Moderation matters.

The study is wrong. Cut out sugar and processed foods high in carbs. Eat only whole wheat bread and fruit. Eat lean meats.
Sugar and carbs are killers.

That sounds like a great idea! I had been wrapping them in iceburg lettuce leaves but that’s a bit tricky.

My conclusions from talking to many people and reading lots of studies agree with your post. I have known several people that simply reduced carbs to less than 20% of their CALORIC intake and bang their Type 2 is gone. Apparently this study did not look a carb intake or ignored it. Your comment about mice and grain is very valid. Many things that happen to mice, in these studies, do not pan out on human subjects.

In the US, that is typically caused by the so-called western diets that are high in fat Not my experience. At 52 I finally developed Type II diabetes, started on Atkins, lost my food cravings after a short time and primarily eat meat, eggs, cheese, and veggies. I lost 80lbs this time and my blood sugar normalized. I can't control either my appetite or my blood sugar when I eat sugar or high glycemic foods. I'm convinced based on my own experience.
I got into trouble in my 30's when all-of-a-sudden low fat became the craze. I tried living on carbs and gained a 100lbs for my troubles.

Every now and then, wheat flour doesn’t hurt. And when it’s traditional stuff for the extended family, no big deal. There’s only one left.

They need to lose the craving for sugar. That craving for sugar comes from yeast (Candida) in the digestive tract. Some good pro-biotics out to take care of the Candida assuming they cut the bread from their diet. Remove the Candida - remove the craving.
