It’s just barely possible that the entire surface of the planet has not yet been checked with metal detectors.

In addition, I don’t know if they have the technology to detect the typical gold deposit in the ground because of (1) the depth of most of the deposit and (2) its diffuse nature—commonly only a few tens of parts per million of ore.
They might, but it would be one honkin’ metal detector.
