We used to hold a carnival for MD every year, starting in 1966. When Jerry first started the Telethon, he encouraged kids to hold them. No meddling of parents to "help us" build the booths - we really learned the value of giving the time of ourselves to someone else.
The first carnivals started out small - but we evntually go the ENTIRE neighborhood to join in ... And with the cheap prices [5-10 cents] for each chance at a booth, I don't think that we ever collected more than about $50-60. But to us, it was like a million bucks for Jerry's Kids !!!
Thats a bunch of BS. About 2-3 months ago, it stirred up a hornet's nest when MDA said Jerry would NOT be hosting.
Jerry was contacted for a quote about it - he said he was disappointed, but would NOT comment further. He was NOT going to bad-mouth them. He's a CLASS ACT ...
BTW: MDA got so much shit for this that they were going to have Jerry sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the end [appeantly, they even hired an orchestra], BUT something went wrong at the last minute.
Orchestra was fired and Jerry WAS NOT on the air at the end ...
apparently, that is [sic: appeantly]
And arrive at that number when there are tape delays? Smells fishy to me. It’s obvious MDA wants to save face by delaying totals until the show clears Hawaii, but how much are they going to make in Hawaii, for heaven’s sake!?! LOL!
By the way, I heard that Jer has been scrubbed from the MDA website.

MAN !!! MDA REALLY fu*ked up !!! Jerry’s bio is STILL listed on the MDA web site:
http://www.mda.org/media/jerrylewis.html
BUT, after you go there - it REVERTS to the “Post-Telethon” web page AFTER about 10 seconds ...
In case you can’t see it, this is what it says:
*****
Jerry Lewis Bio:
Jerry Lewis announced May 16, 2011 that he is retiring as host of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon. He has hosted the Telethon since 1966 and will make his final appearance on the Sept. 4, 2011, show by performing his signature song, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
*****
BTW: Jerry DID NOT get to perform “You’ll Never Walk Alone” ...
He’s 85 health could very well be the situation with him..

That WAS NOT it. When this FIRST came out a few months ago, I paid attention since I raised money for Jerry’s Kids by putting on neighborhood carnivals [starting in the 1960’s].
MDA 86’d him - and [if I remember correctly] didn’t even call to inform him first. He found out when he was contacted by the media for a quote.

and then read my post:

MDA put wording on their web site that stated Jerry would perform “You’ll Never Walk Alone” - not only did Jerry NOT sing the song last night, the thread [above] flatly disputes he EVER agreed to do it ...
MDA has some ‘splainin’ to do ...
He was dumped by MDA. That story about hiring an orchestra was allegedly to record Jerry’s singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” But MDA said Jerry never showed up. It was a crock ‘o BS. There are people who know the truth of what happened, but these friends of Jerry’s won’t tell the details.
We’ll have to wait to see if Jerry will say what happened. BTW, the telethon is older than 1966. I think they used the Ed Sullivan Theater a couple of times. It was on for a few years before Jerry raised his first million $.
Brought in more than last year in 6 hours? Don’t know what to say. Hard to accept.

$72.50....they had a telethon? I must have missed it....I remember MDA used to have a telethon hosted by Jerry Lewis....but that one has been canceled and not replaced by anything.....
I don’t believe the total at all...the assholes American Idol will garner are kids who won’t donate a dime....now if you had said $46.00 I would have believed you.
that’s right...I lived on Long Island and then in Manhattan in those days......you could go up to the theater at 3 am and sit down and watch the show........it started in NYC and Jerry was the guy.....
Which means you didn’t see it happen and
neither did the person that posted it on Forbes.
Next time post what you actually experienced
not what someone else posted on another site.
I never said I watched it. Take the issue up with AP.
The media is reporting that they raised 61 million dollars in 6 hours and beat last year by 2 million. I find this hard to believe. It was only on from 6 pm to midnight on Sunday.
