The viewing public might be split on Chaz Bono's participation on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars," but the way he sees it, his inclusion on the show is just what the doctor ordered for this country.
Reacting to the criticism he's faced sine the Season 13 cast was announced last week, Bono told ABC News, "It's made me realize I'm really glad I'm doing this, because America really needs to see this."
The 42-year-old only child of Cher and Sonny Bono added, "You know, it just kind of shows why for me it's important to be on the show, because so little still is known about what it means to be transgender. And there's so many just completely inaccurate stereotypes and thoughts that people have."
Bono, who was born Chastity Bono and underwent gender-reassignment surgery last year, ignited passions among "Dancing With the Stars" fans on Monday with the announcement that he'd be competing on the series. Many of the show's faithful expressed their displeasure over the choice on the series' message board.
"When I heard that Chaz Bono was going to be on, I was sick," went one typical anti-Bono tirade. "Not that I have anything personally again her/him, I just don't want that lifestyle choice continually flaunted in the media esp ABC."

I’m old enough to remember the “Sonny and Cher” show and saw Chaz when he (it) was a beautiful little blond girl. It is sad that she has turned into a nauseating freak. Even sadder that some people celebrate its transformation. Honestly, would really rather Chaz go into obscurity and not trouble the rest of us with his existence.
I’ve never watched the show, but guess that if America doesn’t vote for her, we will be homophobes? Isn’t that the way liberalism works? Their rules aren’t based on performance.
Chaz is following in her mom’s footsteps, being an attention whore.
This is simply one more reason for Americans to turn off their televisions and let the Freak Show play to an empty house.

Like what? If anything, this confirms the stereotype I have, which is that transgenderism isn't just some private personal thing but actually seeks a reaction from everyone around them. She wants everyone to be involved in her personal melodrama. If she really wanted to undo a stereotype, she would go away and just be some anonymous dude.

You and I agree on a lot of things, but I pity her. She’s not an “it.” She’s a person who seriously needs help. We live in a bizarro world where people have simply declared the abnormal normal. How in the world will the sick ever get better in a world where sickness is the norm?

That is true. Her chromosomes will always say she is a female. I’m not aware that you can change your DNA to alter your core genetic information.
I wonder if she/he would have had this need to transform if she/he were not raised in the cesspool of show business. She/he is not a performer her/himself, so it is not an issue of creative people being “different.” Very rarely do you see this sort of thing among the “general population.”
I never liked seeing her on the Sonny and Cher Show, because she always seemed so sad. Just seeing her made me wonder what was going on in her life to make her so sad. Something happened to that little girl, and it wasn’t good.

I remember Chastity as a little girl (on her parent’s television show). She was so beautiful. I truly wonder, however, if her Mom’s lifestyle didn’t somehow just mess up this person’s mind. Did Chastity define being a “woman” was somehow just like her Mother and chose to not be female because of it? Is this some sort of intense psychological distancing? It just makes me think and wonder what happened to that pretty, little blonde girl with big eyes. Sad.

What Dancing With the Stars needs, like pretty much any TV show, is ratings. It may well get them because Chaz Bono is on the show, who knows? Maybe he’s not a very good dancer.
I actually haven’t seen all that much criticism about this, I honestly don’t think that many people care one way or the other who’s on this show. They’ve had some fairly hideous contestants already, mostly a bunch of has beens and never wases, so this doesn’t really add all that much. But that’s the narrative, right? We’re supposed to be horrified and mean and criticize and then the heroic gay or lesbian or transsexual person triumphs by showing us all how strong and determined he or she is and that the haters are just a bunch of narrow-minded bigots.
Yeah I was just a kid but the Sonny and Cher show seemed a whole lot more innocent compared to the trash of today.
