The viewing public might be split on Chaz Bono's participation on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars," but the way he sees it, his inclusion on the show is just what the doctor ordered for this country.
Reacting to the criticism he's faced sine the Season 13 cast was announced last week, Bono told ABC News, "It's made me realize I'm really glad I'm doing this, because America really needs to see this."
The 42-year-old only child of Cher and Sonny Bono added, "You know, it just kind of shows why for me it's important to be on the show, because so little still is known about what it means to be transgender. And there's so many just completely inaccurate stereotypes and thoughts that people have."
Bono, who was born Chastity Bono and underwent gender-reassignment surgery last year, ignited passions among "Dancing With the Stars" fans on Monday with the announcement that he'd be competing on the series. Many of the show's faithful expressed their displeasure over the choice on the series' message board.
"When I heard that Chaz Bono was going to be on, I was sick," went one typical anti-Bono tirade. "Not that I have anything personally again her/him, I just don't want that lifestyle choice continually flaunted in the media esp ABC."

I remember Chastity as a little girl (on her parent’s television show). She was so beautiful. I truly wonder, however, if her Mom’s lifestyle didn’t somehow just mess up this person’s mind. Did Chastity define being a “woman” was somehow just like her Mother and chose to not be female because of it? Is this some sort of intense psychological distancing? It just makes me think and wonder what happened to that pretty, little blonde girl with big eyes. Sad.

What Dancing With the Stars needs, like pretty much any TV show, is ratings. It may well get them because Chaz Bono is on the show, who knows? Maybe he’s not a very good dancer.
I actually haven’t seen all that much criticism about this, I honestly don’t think that many people care one way or the other who’s on this show. They’ve had some fairly hideous contestants already, mostly a bunch of has beens and never wases, so this doesn’t really add all that much. But that’s the narrative, right? We’re supposed to be horrified and mean and criticize and then the heroic gay or lesbian or transsexual person triumphs by showing us all how strong and determined he or she is and that the haters are just a bunch of narrow-minded bigots.

Oh, there’s a mother/daughter issue here, alright. Just as there was in the Casey/Cindy Anthony disaster.
He looks like he would appear awkward on the dance floor based on his physical structure. JMHO
What else is she doing to say? It’s not like she can back down from the horrific path she’s on, other than just repent.
Like the old song goes, she is more to be pitied than censured. Amazing how badly a person can mess up her life, given enough money and tinsel bloodlines.

I don't. On the other hand, I've never watched "Dancing With The Stars" and hadn't planned on starting this year.
I remember reading about the molestation. Sad... since this occurred at pre-puberty. (sad anytime but I think when a child is entering into puberty, that type of abuse can really mess with who/what they think they should be). I have the feeling that Chastity had a very lonely childhood. I’m sure she was essentially raised by paid household staff and had no true family life. Throw that type of loneliness and no religion to embrace as comfort... it isn’t any wonder to me that she is damaged.
Yes - and Obama said the, ‘We are the ones we have been waiting for”. Whenever someone thinks they are THE answer, they need to be tossed in the dust bin as an example that we can do fine without them and that there is lots of room in the dust bin for others...
Chastity is suffering from a severe mental illness. It is a real shame that it has been allowed to go so far as to result in severe self-mutilation, but certain elements of our society havre far more interest in seeing someone be mutilated rather than trying to give them the help they so desperately need.
I feel for her, and wish that she could get the real help that she needs dealing with her inner demons. Sadly, I do not think that will happen. And in the mean time, here she is, parading around like a freak for everyone to gawk at. That can’t possibly help her find the inner peace she craves. She’s still crying for help, that’s all this is.
She was such a pretty little girl. Life in the public spotlight from such an early age ruined her, as it has so many others.
A lot, Bristol walked off with a reported $450K for finishing third. It depends on how far you go. I have watched the show since its beginning and have loved it, but starting with Kate +8 it has started to veer towards sensalism over dancing. I hope Chaz makes an early exit for his/hers and the shows sake.
