Word For The Day, Wednesday, September 21, 2011 - prepradial
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 09/21/2011 | The Slacker

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

prepradial \pree-PRAN-dee-ul\ - adjective

of, relating to, or suitable for the time just before dinner

Example sentence:

Although dinner was served late, the preprandial conversation was so diverting that no one minded.

Extra Example sentence:

"Churchill celebrated Christmas with the Roosevelts, took part in FDR's preprandial cocktail hours, shared most meals with the president, and, to Eleanor Roosevelt's great dismay, kept her husband up until the early hours each morning, drinking brandy, puffing cigars, and talking endlessly about everything." -- From Lynne Olson's 2010 book Citizens of London

Did you know?
Though the Latin noun "prandium" means "late breakfast" or "luncheon," its derivative English adjectives -- "preprandial," "prandial," and "postprandial" -- are just as likely to refer to other meals; in fact, "preprandial" is usually applied to dinner. Those adjectives were quite new in our language ("prandial" and "postprandial" first appeared in print in 1820, and "preprandial" in 1822) when a Scottish judge wrote in his memoirs, "Every glass during dinner required to be dedicated to the health of some one.... This prandial nuisance was horrible." English also acquired the adverbs "prandially" and "postprandially," but those are much rarer words these days.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

A lovely word. But no mention in the FDR story of Mrs. Nesbit. Mrs. Nesbit was FDR’s White House housekeeper who served the worst food in the nation. Churchill hated her!

Maybe it’s a variation of “querida” only with a fruity twist (no insult intended—I tend to think of everything in terms of food—you know, how alcoholics give directions using bars as reference points—my directions involve restaurants, taco stands, etc.)

if i knew how to do a tilde, i would have put it over the n. Franol would be french and espanol hybrid, Cheri combined with Querida.

Wow, I forgot what you call a tilde. I think you can get it by pulling up characters. I don’t remember how to do an umlaut (sp), either. Haven’t thought about that in years. Oh well, anyway, muchissimas calcetines grandes para ti y su familia! (Customary parting benediction.)

There are those of us who not only mangle Spanish, we chop it up and pour soy sauce all over it. (Here we go with the food references again.) Garcias and buenos dias!

And it is true, this is the closest we get to a date — which I’m going to have to fix in about 14 months.

This is the part I keyed in on, that he is planning to NOT be president. Thinking about him not having the job makes me happy. They are a fake couple, since he plays for the other team, IMHO.

Those annoying phone calls from vendors and solicitors who dial your home while you’re preparing dinner are hardly preprandial...

"If you give up your principles, you're not being very pragmatic," Paul said.

for some reason, this made me smile.

And it's the day/week from hell.
