A republican friend of mine is pissed off at me because I told them straight up that if Romney got the nomination, he won't get my vote. I'm not cutting off my nose to spite my face. So then the usual lecture came out "if you vote third party or stay home, what you're really doing is voting for obama".
I thought to myself about this prospect. Really?
If I vote zero times for Romney, I'm really voting once for Obama?
So then obviously, if I vote once for Obama, I'm really voting twice for Obama?
This is truely interesting math indeed.
Look, sometimes you have to accept the fact that you are going to have to rebuild from ashes. Mitt Romney is "ashes", ok? He's just not going to happen, and if he gets the nomination it's 4 more years of Obama.
Wrap your noodle around this: if you do not vote, that is akin to voting “present.” Are you sure you want to emulate a certain someone?
No, you are not voting for Obama by staying home. What you are doing is saying that you would give up a fought-and-died-for opportunity and responsibility to shape the direction of your country.
Vote how you see fit, but vote. Don’t throw that precious gift back in the face of those who fought and died to continue the freedom to do so.

I am almost 60 and I have always been one of those people telling you that. I always believed that. However from all of my years voting for “at least he is better than...” excluding Reagan we have always got a place holder or worse. I won’t do it this time. Not Romney, not Perry. If the GOP wants my vote they have to give me someone to vote FOR.

I was going to say that you can vote more than twice. Just wait the interval between elections, and vote in more than one election.
A long time ago I decided to vote for Sarah Palin for prez in 2012. It’s up to the Repukes to make sure I don’t have to write her name in but that it be on the ballot next to the letter R.
They were able to rig the nomination for McChurian in 2008. Now, if they want my vote they’ll rig it for Palin.

I had been wondering what would happen if Romney got the nomination. Last time, plenty of people sat out, either thinking McCain would be a disaster or that Obama wouldn’t be so bad.
Now that Obama’s been unquestionably the worst president in the history of this country, I was expecting that a lot of people would be able to vote for the Republican candidate, whoever it might be, recognizing what is at stake.
I see, sadly, that is not true. Let me thank you and your kind in advance for bringing us four more years of Obama (and what is likely the complete destruction of America as we know it).
Philosophically, voting for the lesser evil is still voting for evil, and if I choose not to vote for evil, I haven't given my stamp of approval to anyone. In practice, I have voted for the lesser evil (just to slow things down some), but with the hellbound train pulling into the station, no more.
Simple math: 20 people vote: 9 Democrats vote for Obama; 8 Republicans vote for Mr. X; 3 Republicans decide they can’t vote for Mr. X and don’t vote. Result, Obama wins 9-8, and 3 Republicans are smugly proud of throwing the election to Obama “on principle.”
That is, of course, your choice. Just as it was the choice of many Florida voters to not cast a vote for a presidential candidate in the 2000 election. This forum was quite supportive of those abstentions, IIRC.
I see where you’re coming from but I can’t agree with that logic. An old preacher friend of mine once said (and I’m sure he wasn’t the first), “I’d rather be that person who is a 1000 miles away from God and taking that first step towards Him then to be the person 2 inches from Him and taking the first step away from Him.” Apply that to politics.
Everything is contantly moving in one direction or the other. To vote for someone with whom you are agree with 10% over someone with whom you disagree with 100% is stilling moving in the right direction.
Why they can’t grasp this is something I don’t understand.
Perhaps in 2008 it could’ve been attributed to ignorance. Nobody really knew Obama would be this bad, did they? OK, maybe some of us speculated, but we can’t know the future.
Here, three unimaginably bad years later, I cannot believe people are still saying this crap. They’ll be proud to “stand on principle,” but what they’re doing is guarding their homesteads in what is likely to be a proverbial post-apocalyptic wasteland that was once America.
A lot depends on whether you believe the rank and file Republicans would fight the policies of a statist Republican in Chief.
While conservatives may be mobilized at this point, and would probably continue to fight on regardless of the letter after the president’s name, I doubt that those on the hill, the ones we put there with the duty to vote, would necessarily do so.
on the other hand, my theory that it is better to have an easily identifiable foe in the White House than a Republican who is very little different in the long term is taking a beating upon seeing how much damage one can do in a short time.
I guess one’s opinion on that may depend on whether you feel it is better to bring it all to a head now, or later.

What you vote for in a presidential election is electors. There is no sense in writing in the name of a person who is not an elector.
Sarah has already made her declaration of “ABO.” What would you do if she endorsed Romney? I know the chances are very remote, but given the hypothetical, what would you do then?
Voting for someone who’s history of actions and statements is inimical to freedom is the same as voting for the other side. Voting “present” is better than that. Compromising with candidates like Romney is how we got in the mess that we are in. Continuing to vote for weasels like him is not the way out of this mess. It will only slow the collapse, slightly.

Vote a straight Republican ticket for the eventual nominee. Take out the lower level Demos as they are the ones who are urging their reps and senators to vote all this crazy sh!t into law.

Collapse of the federal government doesn't result in collapse of the states, or some sort of apocalypse. The federal government can't be unwound gracefully. It built itself into a house of cards. The reckoning will come sooner or later.
Another point, that being that Congress has more to do with setting public policy, than the president does. The public has been fooled and conditioned into accepting the president as the domestic policy setter. He is that, only to the extent Congress invites and accepts it, and Congress is ALWAYS looking to blame somebody else, especially when it (Congress) is totally to blame for tax policy, spending policy, entitlement programs, administrative agencies, etc.
I understand that but we were not facing the extreme dangers then that we are now. I just fear that in our convictions we may enable things we had no intention of doing. I’ve noticed a trend of fantastic-conservative people holding to the conviction that if their candidate is not nominated they will not vote. I don’t want the good people of this country who do nothing (meaning not voting) to become the majority, whether it’s done on principle or not.

I believe the only real long term solution to this country’s problem is to eliminate the 2 party system. You can keep voting for RINOs who may bring some very temporary improvements, but just like the debt problem, it’s only kicking it down the road without providing a real solution.
If the GOP nominates a RINO like Romney, then to me, the best thing for this country is for the GOP to die.
Romney noted the differences and declared that his first act as president would be the abolition by exec order of Obamacare. What the hell exactly do you want or need???
I for one will NOT be helping 0bama get another 4 years by refusing to vote just because my favorite candidate isn't on the ticket in Nov 2012. I'll be voting for whoever ends up on the GOP ticket - even if I have to chug maalox first.
He did not say that. He said he'll grant a fifty-state waiver for Obamacare. The bureaucracy and tax structure will still be in place. It was done in the legislature which is where it has to be undone. No President can undo it by executive fiat. Would Romney or even Perry see the dismantling of Obamacare through to the end? I don't really know, but my gut tells me "no."
People are finally starting to figure out that as long as it keeps working they'll keep keep pulling that crap, and promising it'll be better next time.
I’ll still give Perry another chance or two but that’s looking slim. I WILL NOT vote for Romney. Think about it, if we had mccain in there, would it really be that much better? I won’t stay home, I’ll probably vote 3rd party.
Reagan is the only candidate I’ve ever voted for with enthusiasm. The only time I didn’t vote was in the Nixon/Humphrey election. Many voted for George Wallace and as a result, Nixon almost lost. If any of you don’t vote this time and Obama gets re elected, your votes in the future could be quite meaningless because the supreme goal of progressives is to have a permanent majority. With Obama you’ll get an attempt at massive amnesty, institutionalized voter fraud, Union thuggery, etc. Any of those republican candidates is better than what we have now. So you’d better think twice before you defiantly threaten to not vote. If you care anything about the future of our country you’d better vote for one of these candidates. I don’t think we can survive another four years of Obama.
There is no perfect candidate.
I would prefer an honest competent conservative candidate that can lead this country to become better.
At this point, we have two choices: A corrupt socialist/communist big government wealth redistribution Democrat Party; or
Republican Party that has a better overall policy of small government and individual responsibility that benefits the majority of its citizens that promotes freedom and opportunity for all.
However, many of its elected leaders have their own priorities that can be self serving and not always in the best interest of the Republic.
As was stated in the debate, anyone of the Republican candidates will be better than Obama or any other Democrat, so we need to support the best candidate, but realize that the totality of the voters will decide who the Republican candidate will be.
Let’s discuss the issues and promote the changes that we want, but stay away from petty politics.

It's a classic fallacy of false dillema, and a textbook propaganda ploy.
There are other choices. Those choices are going to have consequences and there is room to discuss and debate what those consequences will be, but it's an insult to the intelligence of everyone here to tell them that they only have two choices.

I worked my a$$ off for the last republican candidate because of my “anybody but Obama” attitude. Come to think of it I worked harder than he did. And where did it get me. I made several enemies on FR. Never Again. If they want my vote they must earn it.

During this period, you've had politicians on one side saying "yes, lets just take one more loaf" and politicans on the other side saying "no, lets take it all!"
It is true that eventually you will starve to death either way (i.e. taking 1 more loaf each time you bake vs taking it all now), but you will survive longer if they only increase it by one at a time.
And you just may survive long enough to figure out a way to stop the madness.

What you fail to realize is the long term strategy. Most here seem to focus only on 1 goal - to remove Obama at all costs, which is a short term goal.
While it would be very painful to have Obama win a second term, the long term benefit of a possible 3rd party emergence could outweigh the negatives of second Obama term.
Or you just quit baking bread and magically somebody brings you a loaf of bread.

Of course, there are a million plus choices, but in 2012 there are only two that will count.
There is a need to face reality. The next President will either be a Democrat or a Republican unless the world collapses before then.
You can certainly chose to not vote, but then you are not participating in making the decision. Voting for minor candidates may determine whether the Republican or Democrat wins.
