Roads pave the way for the spread of superbugs (movement of people)

ANN ARBOR, Mich.---Antibiotic resistant E. coli was much more prevalent in villages situated along roads than in rural villages located away from roads, which suggests that roads play a major role in the spread or containment of antibiotic resistant bacteria, commonly called superbugs, a new study finds.

Many studies on various infectious diseases have shown that roads impact the spread of disease, however this is the first known study to show that roads also impact the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria, said Joe Eisenberg, co-author and professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Researchers at the U-M SPH and colleagues from Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and Trinity College studied a region in northwest Ecuador for five years, focusing on antibiotic resistant E. coli and the common antibiotic paring of ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole.

"Our results show it's not just the individual's antibiotic use that affects antibiotic resistance," Eisenberg said. "Other important factors that affect the spread of antibiotic resistance are the rates at which people introduce new strains due to movement in and out of the region, as well as poor water quality and sanitation that allow for the transmission of antibiotic resistant strains." Both of these factors are influenced by the presence of the roads.

Well I live about 30 miles from Ann Arbor and I’m real glad my little town is off the beaten path. Keeps the Ann Arbor virus at bay.

Europe from the Roman period forward? The roads helped spread plagues?

I don’t know what they spent on this study , but I could have told them that the more contact you have with people the greater the chance of contracting an infestious disease.

I would have told them that for free if they had asked.

Where is Capt. Obvious.

The spread of AIDS in India was shown to be closely related to the major highways connecting the various States. Most peasants rarely travelled, and HIV was spread by truckers along the road.

There is some logic to that. Could be true in rural America.

I think 24-7 news does much more to pave the way for e-coli than roads have. I'm sure people in the 30's dies from e-coli, but no one ever knew. Now some kid in Utah dies from a rare hamburger, or his own immune system weakness, and half the places I might go into will only cook their hamburgers medium-well or more. My own father ate RAW hamburger every week while I was growing up. (Cigarettes got him when he was 73. But he liked his cigarettes!)

It certainly helps spread mindless panic about it.

But then again, Ann Arbor is a whore. Just kidding, just kidding! I live in OH but cheer for MI for that game, because I hate OSU (go Canes!). I just couldn’t resist the temptation of virus plus bad nick name!

I think you're right. Someone croaks and they sober up Doc Jensen for long enough to fill out a death certificate and that's that.

Acknowledging that person to person contact spreads illness and that the more contact people have, the more they are exposed to illness. What is the solution? Only eat what is grown in your town, preferably in your yard? Talk to no one you haven’t known all your life? Close the borders ( a lot of FRs would initially cheer this ). Ground the airplanes?

An utterly useless article. Common sense isn’t that common.

This is nothing but bigotry. Immigration, open borders, and free trade promote virtue and health among all hominids.

I don't see any solution but what helps is if people stop eating those cantaloupes that are causing death. I'll bet the sale of cantaloupes took a hit recently.

Just the ones in and out of the cities.

We can call it containment.

From the Ministry of Obvious Facts. I wonder how much of our tax dollars funded this study to figure out that easy modes of transportation helps spread disease.

Didn’t they have that one figured out sometime around, oh, I don’t know, THE PLAGUE?
