I know what it is, and that is by far the best place for it. Much easier than screwing around with a stalk on a steering wheel column, accidentally turning on the windshield wipers etc.

I've lost count of how many times I've had the windshield wipers going on a rainless night.

1. Headlight dimmer switch

2. Points - I had a ‘57 Pontiac and had to change them all the time.

3. Carburetor! Come on! Everybody knows what that is, right? Right? sigh...

That's the gadget that was absolutely useless when you let the little screw that clamped the condenser fall into the cleverly sited hole that would let the #2 screw slip into the distributor/camshaft drive gear. (The driven gear on Dodges was plastic, so you could ruin it if you were clumsy.)

You would then spend two hours trying to fish out the screw with a magnetic retrieval tool, while using up every curse and blasphemy you'd ever heard or invented. Since you only had to replace the points about every year or so, you would forget to stick a piece of tape over the hole.

(While you were at it, you would check the insides of the distributor cap for carbon tracks.)

The fun of being a broke engineering student with a beater car...

An uncle of mine had a 1967 Lincoln Continental hardtop coupe with automatic headlight dimmers but it still had one of those. You depressed it with you foot to activate the electromechanical “scan” feature on the radio, and the tuner knob on the dashboard would seemingly turn by itself, lol. Old tv remotes would do the same thing, but via a radio signal.

It's a two stage four barrel, hard to tell if it's a 750 CFM, or bigger.

As I recall, two 1100's on an Edelbrock manifold was the setup that inspired, "Turn it off, Mister, the gas pump can't keep up!"

My 1980 car was the first one that didn’t have the “can” button for the bright lights. I know that because when I drove it home from the dealer it was dark out and my bright lights were on and I had absolutely no idea how to turn them off. I kept annoying oncoming traffic the whole way home as I futilely stomped on the floor trying to press a button that wasn’t there.

I actually prefer having the control on the stalk, if for no other reason than those metal can buttons rusted out (at least in those climates where snow was common).

Slightly off track but one of the irritations of driving in the left lane ala England and much of Asia, is having the turn signal and the wiper reversed. I spend the first two weeks in Asia turning on the wipers instead of signaling a lane change or turn and then on my return, I have the cleanest windshield in town for two weeks.
