is facebook for women and effeminate men?

Posted on 10/21/2011 10:07:09 PM PDT by mamelukesabre

When I first got pushed into signing up for facebook 3 years ago, I thought it would be a waste of my time. after a month or two, I decided it was kinda fun. Then I started hearing bad things and started worrying about security and my use of it tapered off. Now, 3 years later, I don't look at my facebook much but when I do, I notice two things:

its almost purely women that put things on facebook and make comments on stuff.

its purely women that are sending me friend requests and I have no idea who they are.

Is facebook dying off, drying up, wasting away? Is it turning into a ladies book club or ladies cribbage club? If so, how long before the same thing happens to FR?

Just a random thought for a late friday nite home alone with my dog.

I finally couldn’t stand all the people telling me to sign up to Facebook and started an account. I then spent several hours getting OFF the damned thing, and it’s still there, I just have deleted almost all my ‘friends.’ People can tell me all day how great it is, but I’m a 45-year-old man and simply can’t see ANY benefit to the thing. People post what they’re eating, what they’re thinking, and an old lefty friend posts the most lunatic leftist crap seemingly hourly.

Nothing can convince me that it is anything but a waste of time, and only feeds the narcissism of our culture. People seem to think their every breathing moment, their every stray thought, and their most ordinary activity is somehow validated by putting it there, immortalized forever—as if anyone is going to look at that when they’re so busy posting their OWN ephemera.

You’d do better just sitting in your living room with your dog, enjoying the silence and peace. I am 100% serious.

Never been on Facebook. Never felt the need to. FR is my choice of venue for comments and chatter.

Besides, got more during my tour in Iraq on FR that all other sites combined.

It seems to be for high school kids and college kids. After that if you have time for it, you should get a life and a job....:O)

Even if you deactivate your facebook account, it is still there on their servers. The only hope of it getting truly deleted is if the entire facebook building complex burns to the ground, which would probably happen a lot sooner than some facebook drone who works there deleting it at your request.

I signed up under a phony name a couple years ago just to check out the profiles of some old high school girlfriends (30+ years ago). I saw, I was entertained (for a few minutes), and I left. ...and haven’t been back since. Yeah, that place is narcissist central.

My young nieces are always on FB it seems. This 55 year old only goes there every now and then. Its too much overload for me and I don’t possess much desire to keep in touch with yesteryears friends and such. All those silly games too on FB-—puhlease. Maybe old geezerhood is creeping up on me.

Agreed. I once watched a friend’s kid as she IM’d with about 20 people at the same time. “How are you?” “I’m cool, you?” “I saw Sandy today, LOL!” “I know! LOL!” “OMG”

I asked her if she was enjoying herself, and she shrugged. “It’s something to do.”

It wasn’t actual communication, it was more like some kind of electronic game, where you put the proper characters in their places—LOL, OMG, Oh yeah?—to keep the characters scrolling up the screen. Just as pointless as Pong.

lol

when I first joined up, I uploaded a bunch of old gradeschool class pics. The old classmates flocked to my facebook and put up all kinds of stuff...old memories and such. It was fun for a couple months.

I am also in my 40s.

I just checked my facebook tonight. It’s like you say. Pointless. Like a bunch of old ladies at church trying to make all the other old ladies look at her wallet of photos. AND, its all women on FB. Then there are the kooks trying to get everyone to sign their stupid petition for saving some dam worthless thing that should be left to die. Then there are the addicted facebookers that are compelled to tell you where they are every couple hours...via iphone or android. I wonder if they actually do that with their phone or if there is an “app” out there that automatically sends a facebook message whenever you are moving?

If people had any idea what’s under the hood, they’d run like hell from FB. That thing is one step away from a gigantic crash. It’s spaghetti.

I’ve got lots of real men on my Facebook. My cousin who runs a fire department, for one. There are plenty from my high school class, too.

I’m educating many people on conservative issues, and about Herman Cain, too.

Oh,and I don’t know who the hell most of these “friends” are. I get friend requests from people who I’ve never heard of in my life!

Activists of all types. My sister is one of them -- the anti-vaccine activist. She annoys hundreds of people daily.

FR is about discussing ideas, not one’s personal life, so facebook and FR have very little in common.
