Pack it in!City targets cop’s cheap cigs

A Lower East Side tobacco shop co-owned by an NYPD captain is by illegally peddling smokes for less than $6 a pack, city officials say.

The cheap scheme at Island Smokes, where Cpt. John Kimball is a co-owner, is simple: Workers sell loose tobacco to customers, who then make their own cigarettes on in-house, automatic rolling machines. The shop says this allows them to sell the ensuing “packs’’ for less than half the normal $13 cost because technically, they have sold only loose tobacco, which is taxed at a much lower rate.

But that’s not how the city rolls, officials said.

“We view the business as illegal,” said Law Department attorney Eric Proshansky. He ordered the Eldridge Street shop and its flagship store on Staten Island to stop selling the smokes after undercover investigators discovered the scheme.

I remember when they increased the price of gum from a nickel for a five stick pack to a dime for a ten stick pack. I swore off gum for YEARS.

It’s funny how people have just gotten used to prices going up. I have a stack of ten Morgan silver dollars I like to show people. I tell them that the stack was worth $10 back in the early 1920’s and was worth $10 in the mid-1970’s. Now it’s worth about $350.

I have a very SERIOUS problem with that. So serious that I moved out of the city and bought a home and farm in very rural country. We can be 100% self sufficient here if it comes to that. I’ll miss air conditioning in parts of July though...

—After trying smoking that once ... I did.—

Hehe. In the early 70’s someone passed me a cigarette made to look like a joint. I took a good hard hit and, about two minutes later, threw up rather violently.

Strong stuff.

Disclaimer - I have not touched the “evil weed” since 1977.

My husband and I have been making our own for over 10 years. We buy a “carton” of tubes - basically empty cigarettes, filter and all then use a small machine to “stuff” the tubes. About $7.50 a carton.

I suppose setting the tax on the loose tobacco at the same rate as cigarettes never occurred to them.

They already do. A pound of (cheap) domestically grown tobacco runs roughly $14, $5 of which is tax mandated under the MSA.

It is the patriotic duty of every American to pay as little in taxes as the law allows. ;)
