I suspect that part of that is if your body is winding down gradually, you may not notice the problem, but you feel retirement is more appealing than it was before.
My wife is an RN who worked in a geriatric ward for 6 years. While its true they weren’t all post-surgical patients, most of those who died did so because of anything but post-op infections—Cancer, renal failure, etc.—and if it wasn’t cancer or some other chronic disease it was almost always it was the body giving out in some way.
Most elderly people die of things that would have been called “old age” on the death certificate 50 years ago.

I find it interesting that he says this crap about pushing religion. Anybody who thinks atheists live by logic can just consider Rooney’s point here.
If you’re an atheist, you believe that if I die an atheist, my mind will cease to exist and my body will rot under six feet of dirt. And if I die as a born-again Christian, my mind will cease to exist and my body will rot under six feet of dirt. Why would you bother trying to convert me?
However, if I’m a Christian I believe that the atheist who becomes a born-again Christian will spend eternity in a place so wnderful the current human mind can’t describe it, and the atheist who doesn’t will experience torment forever. And this guy “resents” people trying to warn him about that?
If I saw a neighbor putting the lightweight motor oil in his engine before a thousand mile road trip and knew his engine would blow up and didn’t tell him, Rooney would think I was acruel jerk and an example of how (as he once wrote) religion doesn’t make people any nicer to each other. Yet if someone told him he was headed for something infinitly worse than a blown engine, he resented it. Foolish.

He’d died from complications from surgery, but they never say what the surgery was for.
RIP Mr Rooney. I disagreed with him a lot but he did provide valuable service in WWII. Condolences to his family and friends
Both conditions arise really fast when old folks are immobilized for even short periods.

He spoke the truth on that one and got a lot of flak.
That is likely a spurious correlation. People who work until they are very old, likely retire because a serious health problem has arisen. So that the often die a short time later is like due to them having a serious health problem, not that they retired.
That is older people who get serious health problems often die whether they retired 20 years ago or 1 month ago. However those who recently retired appear to die frequently right after retiring, even if the reason they retired was they had developed a health problem.

He was strongly opposed to gambling which would have put him in the same position as Southern Baptists.
