Leave it to right-wing think tanks to tell the world that teachers are overpaid.
Right wingers hate unions and they hate paying public employees, so keep that in mind as you try to digest recent surveys from The American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation that say teachers just make too much money.

Our school district gets at least 100 qualified applicants for every advertised opening. Average salary in our district is around $58K per year.
Go southwest to rural West Virginia about two hours as the crow flies and the average salary drops to about $32K per year. Qualified applicants are a good deal scarcer. Considering that there are quite similar costs of living between SW Pennsylvania and West Virginia, you should put the market wage somewhere between $32K and $58K per year. But the labor cartel won't allow it.
Considering the quality of the product produced..? Way overpaid.

Because "overpaid" for what a teacher (generally) does and what a teacher (generally) is capable of doesn't approach what an intelligent and motivated person can earn in a real job as an engineer, surgeon, banker, small-business owner, etc.
In addition, many intelligent and motivated people don't want to spend four years of college on idiotized "education," and then spend their careers fighting through mobs of zombies in the attempt to do something worthwhile. Short work hours/work years, consequence-proof tenure, and so on are "rewards" for dull-witted drones, not for people with real ability and real education.
Those of the "best and brightest" who really want to teach some subject find themselves positions in private education and earn what they're worth in the free market, in the combination of monetary and intangible rewards that suits them as individuals.
Teachers are offered a contract every year. It’s a yearly contract for X amount of money. They can opt to receive it over 12 months in which they’d get a check during the summer break or take it for 10 months in which they’d not receive a check during the summer break.
How can you blame a teacher for what they make? They don’t personally set the salary scale . The salary is determined between negotiations of the teacher union and the school board ( either appointed or elected in individual districts ) . THE TARGET IS THE SCHOOL BOARD. It is only natural for a person wanting a teaching job to apply to districts that pay a lot of $$.
BTW, teachers don’t get paid for the summer .They are paid for a 180-85 day year and it is not their fault how much they make .
Not in elementary school they don't. And they don't get summer off, not any more. The teacher I know best works year round and when school is in session leaves home at 6:45 and gets home after 6:00 and does another 1 to 2 hours work.
I'm not commenting on pay, but this is not a job for goldbricks.

That might depend on where you live. I know teachers in AL, VA, IL and CA...all get a summer break. They start work a day or two before the students com back.
My wife is a school nurse and she gets a break in the summer...4 weeks off, work for 2, then off another 4 before school starts again.
Any job performed well and honestly is a real job.

If you base it on including salary, healthcare and retirement benefits, most are overpaid, some way overpaid.
If you base it on the fact the average teacher makes 1 1/2 times in salary and benefits than the average taxpaying private worker, most are overpaid, some way overpaid.

My father recently spent 5 days in surgical ICU and several more days in the hospital. He’s out of the hospital and doing okay now.
I have a new found respect for what nurses do. You guys are great.
I’ve confronted teachers with the time off argument as well and have gotten the same response. I think that is really lame and remind them that their pay for 9 months is more than most professionals make in a year. Teachers in my area get $50 to $75K per year so extrapolate the $75K for 9 months to 12 months and effectively they would be making $100K a year if they worked 12 months. I don’t begrudge teachers trying to make a good living and the good ones do work hard but I just wish they would acknowledge that relative to other professions, they get a lot of perks and their pay, if broken down by the hour is pretty damned good.
Considering the product they turn out they should have to pay to keep destroying minds!
