Self-defense Devices Other Than Guns

Things are getting dicey. While some States allow gun open carry and others allow concealed or both, many good folks just don't want to have to carry all the time.

While I wish all good citizens would carry, here is an alternative for those who still would defend themselves and those innocents around them.

I remember than one! That was Tex Cobb as “Sailor” in the movie Uncommon Valor. Cobb had some great one-liners. My favorite being “Boy, you just bought the whole can of whup-ass!”

"My backup is a collapsible baton."

I used to have a couple (handy little items if you know where to hit). Also, was trained in a PR24 baton while Shore Patrol in the Navy. That's all good if you can use it like in the movies, but since most of us older or non-trained folks can't, zapping there ass actually works. They fall to the ground. Then beat feet! Ha!

Good thread

I did a little research/testing of alternate self-defense products for my wife to carry from her car into work. After considering a couple of products and trying a few out, this is what I settled on:

Mace Pepper Gel Night Defender

This is a pepper gel that that is effective out to about 10 or 15 feet. I decided to go with the gel instead of the spray to minimize the risk of her getting blow back or if she had to use it in close quarters.

The gel completely coats the face and it will grind deeper into the skin when the bad guy goes to wipe his face. (I am taking them at their word, I did not personally verify that claim).

After the fact the product coats the skin of the bad guy(s) with a UV dye for later identification if necessary.

"wasp spray is supposed to be good."

Wasp spray is an excellent deterrent, but never seen it other than a full size can. If they make it in a pocket size, please let me know. Although, if not careful, it could come back to you.

I don't have a lot of training but I have just always looked at whatever is around as a potential weapon. I did it spontaneously a couple of times when I was a kid. Surprised me almost as much as it did my antagonists.

I get your point though. I have a pocket folder and pepper spray as firearms alternatives. A stun gun would definitely beat opening someone up with a knife and take less skill.

I hear that a blue ringed octopus can inflict some serious damage.

"Excellent info. Thanks."

You're welcome. Just look up your State laws and buy the "zapper" that you think works best. However, I will say again that tasers are too big and bulky. Look at the site. The stun guns come in all different sizes and configurations. Like I said above, I like the "Blaster Knuckle" because it is pocket size and once wrapped around your hand, there is little chance of anyone taking it from you. Just push the buttom, and down he goes. If not, he will at least back off in pain - time to let you get away.

Pepper spray and Tasers have both come a long way since Rodney King.
I can point you to a thread full of people who have ‘ridden the lightning’ and been OC’d, and they all say they’d rather be Tasered again.
Get some Fox Labs 5.3, and you’ll be good to go.

Although a venomous cone snail is more convenient to carry.

You can get a cheap crossbow for under a hundred dollars. But it will give you one chance to put a bolt through a bad guy. It is much nicer to have at least a few backup rounds.

My friend has a 45 caliber air rifle that shoots 180gr bullets at over 750fps when filled to 3000psi. It is bolt action and it will shoot several rounds before losing a lot of it's oomph. We cast our own projectiles. It is not considered a firearm anywhere that I know of. The first several rounds all pack considerably more energy than a .22 cal rifle.

My friends has a different gun than the one pictured below. His has a larger air resevoir and it costs more. I couldn't find a picture online. I have never purchased anything from airgundepot.com, but included the link so you could see specs and approximately what they cost.

There is some controversy over the effectiveness of wasp spray to take down an opponent.

If you spray it the face, a good strong pepper spray will immediately blind the assailant every time. That’s a good thing.

As an aside, I bet in many states the ‘Blaster Knuckle’, no matter its composition or purpose, falls under ‘brass knuckle’ laws. So double double check one’s state laws.

You're welcome, at one time there was a good youtube demonstration but it seems to have gone missing. All I could find was some guy playing with the LED light feature.

Night Defender

I know of some women who carry a small nasal spray squeeze bottle, full of household ammonia.
