I saw the whole situation quite differently. I saw the ex boyfriend communicating with you as a curiosity; knowing in advance your views, yet writing in a way to get a reaction out of you. (maybe he wants to get to know you again?) Don't give him the pleasure.
If it were me, I wouldn't take it personally. I would have said something like: "Great to hear from you, not sure I totally understood the logic in your comments, but then again, you never were one for pillow talk."
And leave it at that. Not attempt to persuade to the conservative point of view, no gnashing of the teeth, nothing. He doesn't deserve a reaction.
